- Learn to play the traditional harp in a comfortable, supportive way. Here's the 1st part of the melody of the Welsh lullaby "All Through the Night" taught by master harper and harp maker Chris Caswell. More online lessons and Skype lessons available at ChrisCaswell.net.
Chris' teaching style is so relaxing and clear, it gives one hope that if they truly put in the effort, they can truly learn this mystically soothing instrument. It's like a cheery hearted grandfather passing on an esoteric tradition that makes you feel privileged and inspired. I read in the other posts that he has since passed on. His gifts of teaching and sharing will be missed and I'm sure he is in heaven right now sharing his talents in heaven with the choirs of angels...
Sleep my child and peace attend thee,
All through the night
Guardian angels God will send thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and dale in slumber sleeping
I my loved ones' watch am keeping,
All through the night
Angels watching, e'er around thee,
All through the night
Midnight slumber close surround thee,
All through the night
Soft the drowsy hours are creeping,
Hill and dale in slumber sleeping
I my loved ones' watch am keeping,
All through the night
While the moon her watch is keeping
All through the night
While the weary world is sleeping
All through the night
O'er thy spirit gently stealing
Visions of delight revealing
Breathes a pure and holy feeling
All through the night
Angels watching ever round thee
All through the night
In thy slumbers close surround thee
All through the night
They will of all fears disarm thee,
No forebodings should alarm thee,
They will let no peril harm thee
All through the night.
Though I roam a minstrel lonely
All through the night
My true harp shall praise sing only
All through the night
Love's young dream, alas, is over
Yet my strains of love shall hover
Near the presence of my lover
All through the night
Hark, a solemn bell is ringing
Clear through the night
Thou, my love, art heavenward winging
Home through the night
Earthly dust from off thee shaken
Soul immortal shalt thou awaken
With thy last dim journey taken
Home through the night

Sadly for us all, this great teacher and human being passed away January 21, 2013.
I enjoy your methodical patience. :)
Thanks Chris! Your words at the end were beautiful as well! Trying to learn a little damping technique for some other styles of music but love your playing!
Another great lesson. Thank you again.

Oh and by the way - I have always LOVED All Through the Night and use to sing it to my little duck after he took a bath.
you are amazing. How much are the rest of your lessons?
I dont mind paying a fee to learn afterall you are the best teacher I have found in a long while!
I play the piano, so I am fortunate enough to be able to read music. Harp has always interested me. What would be the best size for me to start with? How many strings, in your opinion.
I've been dreaming of playing the harp and violin my entire life and i would like to start because your lessons are so relaxing and you explain very well, but i don't really know how to buy a harp. I would like one that has a celtic sound, but I am not sure which prices are good, how many strings should i choose, how big should it be. Can you please make a video in which you answer all these questions? What should I know before going to buy the harp? Thank you. You are wonderful.
***** Oh, that is really sad. I did not know that. He played beautifully. We are really blessed to have heard him play the harp. RIP
Hi! Thanks so much for these lessons! Your heart shows through which I think is why I connect with your lessons! Question: my shoulders are very disabled from a neurological thing, and so I have been trying to jerryrig something for my elbows to rest on comfortably so that my shoulders bear as little of their own weight as possible. But it is very clumsy and can slip so I was wondering if you know other people who are learning to play or do play who have this problem and how they handle it? I have a bed pillow in my lap, the harp kind of leans in that when I rest it on my shoulder, then I have two rolled up towels on either side to support my elbows. Basically my shoulders are exhausted just by the time I've put all the pillows and towels in place! Thanks!
I was taught to hold my elbows up by using my back muscles, not my shoulders, because yes shoulder muscles tire easily. If you raise your elbows slightly and roll your shoulder slightly forward from your back, does it help?
Aww, that is sad! Perhaps that is why the website no longer exists.
Is their printed music available for this arrangement?
:( I am very sad to hear that. He has such a calming voice, and I am able to learn from him very well, which is saying a lot because I have difficulty with learning when someone is talking to me. I do much better by reading, or better yet, doing.
How do you deal with your nail hitting a plucked string causing the aftersound to suddenly stop? When I switch fingers, say, from B to C, the back part (nail) of my index finger keeps hitting on the strung-B...
Does anyone know what notes he was playing with his left hand? It's kinda blurry and i have bad eyesight so i have no idea
