Genuine's RoughHouse R50 Scooter is great....EXCEPT FOR THESE 5 THINGS!

- Genuine Scooter Company has some great scooters. Their Roughhouse R50 Sport is an example. The R50 is made in Taiwan by PGO and imported into the US by Genuine. It is a spunky little 2-stroke 50cc that is an amazing choice for those limited to 50cc, and even for people that enjoy that vintage 2-stroke sound as it's the last 2 stroke scooter (along with it's sibling the Genuine Buddy 50cc) sold in the US. All that said, after 2-years of ownership I do have a few grips. Not all of these are the fault of the scooter. In most cases it's my failure to gauge my own needs in a scooter....that's how good of a moped scooter this is. Still, I feel these are important to share in case someone else has a similar situation.
What are your thoughts on this little 50cc scooter? Do you think 50cc is too small? Comment below!

I have one as well, 2017, same scooter and at 6,783 Miles over 6 years it has needed little to no work done to it outer then simple maintenance.
Nice and well put together video Kev.
Edit: i have keep the bike stock/ but did have the restriction's removed before 500 miles .
Runs great and GPS is 46mph with a 160 lb rider/gear. I do use Bell Ray 2T oil and have when i bought the scooter, good clean stuff.
after 2 years your scooter looks brand new sir. your so clean on your things like me sir👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much for this very good video .. I am sticking to 50cc not matter what.. I like the roughhouse 50cc, but Genuine will hopefully learn from this to improve the Roughhouse 50cc. I hope Genuine improves the headlight.. But even more important is the riding comfort.. Riding comfort is SUPER IMPORTANT!!! Hopefully, Genuine improves the ride by making some simple improvements. I would start with the basic - non sport version of the Roughouse.. For better comfort, maybe Genuine should give it larger bubble tires (more air volume means better ride), and a better shock absorber.. and a thicker padded seat. Those things are not that expensive and would make a huge improvement in ride quality.. Hopefully, Genuine can make these improvements so I don't have to buy one and go thru the headache of trying to improve the ride quality at my time and expense.
Like the scooter, looks quite a bit like our scoopy 125 that we use for driving around the town here in Hua Hin Thailand!
I have a 150 Thomas Nitro and love it. It will barley go 55mph but that is fast enough for the way I use it. It fills the gap between my ebike and my larger motorcycle. Lots of fun.
Just take the limiter off, it'll go at least 45-50
That 49 cc engine is tailored to qualifying as a low speed vehicle in some jurisdictions. In FL they need a tag but not an operator license. In Jersey they can be operated as low speed vehicle in roads with 30 mph limit or less, meaning only basic car license required.
How did it get by the FMVSS with that headlight. The standards were tossed away when they built it. It cannot be DOT approved. It has to cast a beam out a certain distance and width at a specific amount of lumens.
How you keep yours running so clean without smoke coming out the tailpipe
Thanks kev. Interesting. I wonder if you can get a brighter bulb for the headlight 🤔. The speed is only an issue if you're doing longer trips or are getting on the highway. So... Around small towns should be no problem.
There is a brighter* bulb available. They’re about $50. I don’t know that they’re any better for seeing the road as they’re just a different range of light temperature, but they do show up better when looking at the scooter, IMO. That said, I won’t invest in one until mine burns out since I’m contemplating a different scooter for my main ride
That would have been a rocketship back in the early 80s for a 50cc moped at 38mph, not to mention dual disk brakes !!! 👍👍
Yes it would have been. Single disc brake though
IIRC, Honda was going over 100mph with their 50cc back in the 60s.. Of course, it was a 100,000 dollar plus engine and never made it to production (they never even tried). I think it revved at like 20k or more. I forget the exact details.
It was probably a 6 cylinder 50cc that redlined at 23 million rpm 😂
Passed a ZX-9 as he was merging on the highway. I was riding a Honda Silverwing 600. He thought I was trying to race him. He pulled up beside me, shook his head and took off. I shrugged to myself and held the throttle wide open. I passed him doing 109 mph. 🤷🏻♂️
Some 250 sport bikes have a redline over 20,000 rpm. That blows my mind!
Years ago and maybe still, "under 50cc" is a special class that does not require a motorcycle license in many states.
There are states that still allow no license (some even no insurance) for under 50. Alabama isn’t one of those. They only difference in Alabama is they won’t title under 50cc. Tag only.
I have a 2023 Honda Metropolitan scooter my scooter cruises at 38 miles an hour all day long not even trying I go everywhere with it
I'm on my second roughhouse 50 and the dealer asked me when I bought it if I want it to be regulated and I said sure so I can actually do 49 mph and the only place I can't drive it is on the expressway where you have to do 55. I add some octane booster to my regular gas and it really gives me an extra few mph, the dealer said it's good for the engine also. Yes these New York potholes from the winter are hell on my rear end until they feel them so I'm constantly swerving around divots in manhole covers! I meant to say deregulated another words Louis the governor that makes it only goes 30 mph
Derestricted
Yes,oops
If anyone wants something a little faster than 30-35 mph, look at some of the Honda minimotos. They offer 125cc, up to around 50-55 mph, but they are similar in physical sized as some of these scooters.
This is why I bought a Navi. I live in town with 25-40 mph limits but people go much faster in the 35-40 mph areas. The Navi lets me cruise at 45 mph no problem and feels safer when the road opens up to 45-50 mph.
My Roughouse 50 goes 50 mph without the restricter. Im 6'3 240 lbs 😂. I love the scooter it is reliable. You can buy a brighter headlight bulb. I put a 50w in mine. Game changer
Cool scooter. Can you swap a LED light into the headlight?
Yes and no they have issues with burn out fast and the other problems with 2 strokes is they run so good then they break
So people do, but the pulse of AC isn’t kind to led headlight bulbs
The seat from the regular model makes more difference in comfort than the shock. Try switching to the old school seat. You will like it.
What do you mean by the old style seat ?
Any recommendations for a 70 cc upgrade? I don’t want it to sound like a high reving piece of crap. Will it sound like that if I pay a professional to do the upgrade? Love the roughhouse. I have had for 1 year and I still look at it and think how cool it is.
The 70cc cylinder kit will definitely be louder. But other parts are what increase max rpm and make that really kid type sound.
It looks like the headlight, light bulb is a H4? Thought about upgrading the bulb to those super bright LED type? Granted the housing is the reflector style, LED bulb may make your scooter more visible to others in the night.
Also watching daily news from back home, Taiwan, there are news on folks getting runover or crashes everyday. Most of them do not survive, so do be careful out there.
I believe you are bottoming out in the back. It looks like the preload on the top of the spring is adjustable by turning the ring at the top of the spring downward. I finally figured that out on my Hooligan and now the back suspension is very comfortable and does not bottom out like it use to. The adjustment on the Hooligan is on the bottom.
For the speed issue remove the spacer washer in the variator. This is restrictor put in to limit the speed to legal limits. Now you should have only 3 cons. HA
Not nitpicking at all for adults looking at this scooter. The hard ride, 2 cycle buzz, and non-existent headlight are true concerns. Some dealers wont let you test ride, and some only let you ride around their own parking lot...;((
Have you derestricted the bike?
I’ve heard it can get higher speed afterward
This one came fully deresteicted. Otherwise it would have topped out at 30mph
I've been thinking about a scooter for buzzing around my town. Nowhere is the speed limit over 35mph. My concern is at 6'3. 235 lbs would I be comfortable and how would my size limit mph ? Any suggestions ?
You're only going to ride it for short hops, so comfort not critical. Go to a showroom and sit on one.
If you're not DL restricted, go a notch bigger. These are for kids and DUI recipients.
Lol. The roughhouse is not ”for kids and DUI recipients.” By that logic bicycles would only be for those two groups too.
Regarding sizing. I wouldn’t want to ride a small frame scooter/bike/whatever if I were 6’3”. There are plenty of medium and large frame scooters that would fit that size rider better that still have the famed scooter nimbleness that many people (myself included) love.
My wife has one of these, I ride it all the time and I'm 6'5" same weight. If you don't care what you look like on it you will like it. I can get 40 on it on flat ground when lucky...
The gas cap is a issue for sure if you lose it, it will cost you over $100 because everything with a key will need replaced.
Couldn't you just replace the bulb with an led? Is the headlight sealed?
Minute's later now I'm able to comment on this video, u can mod your R50 with a 100cc bbk and even add a stretch kit maybe 🤷🏾♂️
Have a 2022 genuine buddy 50 i use to commute 4000 miles 0 issues or problems.. if it could do 45 and better shocks would be the perfect bike ..i know where every pothole in my city is and ride wih a cushion under me
2 stroke and honestly a 150cc is going to be be better for longer rides
The yamaha xmax is nice as well.
Remove the restriction from the variator(video on UA-cam ) purchase a sport exhaust from scooterworks for the roughhouse with a 78 main fuel jet, not a 80 jet like they suggest and you close to 50 mph. $140
Variator restrictor isn’t on the bikes anymore from the factory. They come in a packet under the seat and a dealer has to install them to limit the bike to 30mph. Mine is derestricted. As far as the other mods…No doubt they will increase the top speed, but they also decrease the life of the engine.
Did you hear about the Aggie that read that all fatalities happened 5 mi from their house. So he moved. Lol. I'm a UT Fan
Have you ever ridden with a passenger? Interested to see how it is as I take a pillion passenger on my 125cc motorcycle and its always been good
I have not. 50cc isn’t good for a passenger unless it’s completely flat and limited distance, IMO
This thing sweet... fricken 40 up hills all day with my ladie
I did buy that and its okay, but not like my other bikes i had 350 Honda dirt bike, 550 suzuki
They sell a led fin h3 headlight that fits
Where you get lever gaurds or did it come with bike new
Came with the bike. It’s part of the ‘Sport’ model upgrades
I have just R50 its a good scooter it's a 2021 thanks for response!
Congrats on the great scoot. You can order the guards from any Genuine dealer (I recommend Scooter Stop.) They can easily be added to the base model.
Is knee room better on others?
Hello. I’m not sure what scooters you’re comparing knee room vs this one
Hi Kev, Key placement on foldable ebikes like Lectric XP & Engwe Pro 2 make me insane. After 2 years of riding I still have to hunt.
Lol. I’ve never liked that underside key location, but on a folding bike with an internally housed battery, I understand why they have to do it that way
@@KevCentral With the battery as tight to the frame as it is making the key hole on the side of the frame would be so simple. Like the lock pin on the other side of the frame.
Kev, I am 6 feet tall, weight 235. Do you think I am too big for this bike ???
I’ve seen people taller ride them. The forward/outward foot plates give a lot of foot room. As far as the weight, I would suspect the top speed would be decreased, so that’s something to factor in.
I have a 50cc, wish I would’ve went with the 125,
Thank you for your videos my brother.. I'm from Jersey City New Jersey I'm having a hard time where to buy this scooter 🤷🏽♂️ can you help me out thank you so much.

@@KevCentralthank you I really appreciate it, keep up the great work 🔥💪🏽
Is there any good cheap offerings like this for off road vehicles? I want something like a dirt bike without spending all that money and I don't need to go fast.
The Honda Ruckus 50cc ($2900) or Honda ADV160cc ($4500) are the only two I can think of.
Have you been to a dealership lately? Sadly, those prices are WAY different than the out the door price. I found this out when shopping around recently. Example: Yamaha Zuma 125. Retail price $3799. Price out the door ranged from $4900-5200 when shopping all the regional dealers. Crazy!
@@KevCentral Yes, I have. I only quoted the MSRP on the Honda website for convenience. I do know that their OTD prices are higher. At least they list the destination and freight charges on the web site (another ~$500). In some areas dealers have been adding their own markups as well as setup fees. Then there are taxes. So yeah, crazy. I went shopping for a Honda CT125 Trail Rider, and my local dealer was going to charge me another ~$1K over MSPR (no dealer markup), and that would have been cheap! Found a used 2022 with 400 miles for $4K, which is $5 over MSRP.
YES! I looked at a CT125 too! That was where I discovered why people on FB were quickly selling used bikes at or slightly above list 😂. The sad thing is I was told by a salesman that most people are only looking at how low they can get a monthly payment on financing. Apparently, only a few of us look at the actual total price. Like that Zuma for nearly $5200….that’s adding 35% to the price of the bike. Crazy. I priced a Vespa GTS Super Sport. It was almost $10k once all the fees and charges were added. Needless to say, I don’t have to worry over which Vespa to buy 🙃
@@KevCentral If you can find a 2021 or 2022 CT125 with low miles I'd recommend it for a trail guy like yourself. A lot of people buy these, but end up selling them because they discover it doesn't go as fast as they'd like or thought it would on highways (52MPH at best). Mine came with a few nice accessories (Diablo seat, rear basket, USB charger, front basket) that made it a nice deal. These days, given fewer and fewer options for scooters, Honda is my go-to brand. Super reliable, parts everywhere. Metropolitan, Ruckus, SuperCub, Trail Rider, ADV160, PCX . Biggest issue is inventory - man these things are hard to find!
Bruh the moped that I got now doesn't even break 28 this would be a better upgrade for me if I can hit that steady 32 I'll be fine at least I don't have people trying to say get off the road that thing doesn't belong on the road and so much at least I'm catching up a little
If 90% of fatalities happen within a mile of your home, you should just move.
I misspoke. It was vehicle accidents and it was within 2.5 miles of where a person lived
@@KevCentral It was a joke
120 cc upgrade kit!!!!!!
hi we would have pronounced Genuine Gen u in. that single bulb looks like a candle
Not in the south 😁. Yeah the bulb is pathetic
im thinking piaggio liberty 50
Smooth riding scooters 👍🏻. My only caution would be to make sure a 50cc will do what you need speed wise.
Why don't you put some performance upgrades on it? You can probably get a good few mph extra without going crazy. Even just a new muffler might give you some extra power. The exhaust is very important on a 2 stroke. A poorly designed muffler or one designed around being quiet as opposed to power will rob a lot of power from a 2 stroke. They need an expansion chamber.
Of course, bigger is better. But I would think liquid cooling is a bit much for a scooter. These things aren't built that well to begin with and it requires a much better casting for the motor and just add a lot of complexity.
Because with increased performance comes increased RPMs and more heat. That = less reliability. I always pick reliability when it’s something I ride regularly.
@@KevCentral That's not true. You probably wouldn't even increase the RPMs at all. 2 stroke engines already run at very high RPMs.
All other things equal, for example, raising the compression ratio will increase power without increasing RPMs. This is basic mathematics.
While if you took a stock engine and increased the RPMs, not only would you cause more wear, you'd likely blow the engine. But nobody would ever do that, precisely because it would blow the engine. Even when a higher red line is being designed into a mod, other changes are made to ensure a higher RPM can be done without blowing up the engine.
IOW, it is not a given that modifying an engine to run at a higher RPM (I'm not suggesting you do that) would not automatically increase wear or blow the engine so long as the characteristics of the engine are modified. Frankly, I think it would cost way too much money to perform such an undertaking. Given the application, it's probably not even an option.
I like the idea of riding a scooter, but the headlight itself is a dealbreaker...
I can tell you never got your Rough House 50cc Derestricted lol
It is fully derestricted
I heard crashes happen within a mile of the home also. So I moved. 🤷🏻♂️
😂
The amount of electric bikes in my area and the stupid people actually driving them in traffic recklessly I see a lot of rules and regulations or possibly outlawed 💥💥 coming
Oh, I’m 100% convinced eBikes are primed for massive regulation. Especially with the amount of people making them go super fast
Edit: I don’t see them being outlawed as they already gave a large footprint in cycling
There's not even a spot on which to attach after market bike lights.
Yep. Someone would have to drill Into the plastics or mfg their own mount
Would I have bought that scooter? No. I like 2 stroke engines, but only on things like chain saws. I gotta have a 4 stroke for reliability, and I dislike the 2 stroke noise. I suggest you dump that one, and upgrade to a larger 4 stroke scooter. I'll probably have a better headlight and suspension as part of the standard package.
Modify the engine
Then down goes it’s most precious commodity: reliability
Just get a Honda Luke
I’m not familiar with that model
You hush your mouth. The Roughouse is PERFECT.
But if you want you can post a 70cc kit on at the next rebuild and that, my friend, is (roughly) equivalent to a 150cc 4t.
Ha! It’s a nice little scoot for what it is. I’ve been very happy with it aside from the few limitations
If you’re concerned about safety I would highly recommend getting a full face helmet and some riding gear if possible even an airbag vest although they are pricey. I ride my scooters as well as motorcycles pretty often and weather l am crashing at 30mph on my taotao or my taking a 100mph slide on my litre bike bith can be equally deadly without proper gear
