I picked up one of these grills for $300 at Lowes 3 years ago and it's still going strong today. I enjoy the extra smoke from this controller better than the newer PID ones. I also like the quick startup times.

I find air gaps to be fairly irrelevant. More of a sign of manufacturing reliability and repeatability than a functional aspect that impacts cook. Happy to let that thing breath, it lets me know that the entire box is full of smoke when I see it breathing out round the entire lid.

I’m looking at the Pit Boss Austin XL and a Pit Boss 820 competition grill (looks to be similar to the pro series), and was wondering which you’ll recommend? Should I spend the extra on the competition series, or is the Austin XL good enough?

I'd go with the PitBoss Laredo over the 1000XL TBH

    Hi David,
First I would like to thank you for your videos and reviews, I find them verify informative and interesting.
I am new to the smoking world, I started with an electric smoker, a Masterbuilt, but have now moved up to a pellet grill.
I just purchased a Pit Boss Pro series 850.
Now I have just started using it, I did the initial burn off and did a Boston Butt which came out great.
    Here is my question/concern.
When I am cooking on the grill at about 230 at about every 5 minutes i get lots of smoke from the grill, it comes out from the lid and even out the outlet for the drip bucket.
No smoke comes out of the hopper.
After a couple of minutes of heavy smoke it goes back to just about no smoke and the cycle begins again every 5 minutes.
Some I am wondering if this is normal, I am guessing that as the auger adds pellets I get more smoke but like I said I get a lot of smoke, more than I would expect.
I am afraid that so much smoke may be dirty smoke and ruin my cook.
Any help advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Peter B

You are getting an auger fire, clean out the fire pot before every cook.

My hopper has to be checked during smoking, the pellets will funnel down, and you can see the shoot. I have to get a screwdriver to push the pellets into the feed. Thats BS
