Who's here after hitting the door 😆... I've punched my door one month and a half, 3 times in a row out of anger ... my boxing coach said to me there's nothing to fear of just Ice your hand... Thank god my hand is 90% restored I don't feel the pain anymore. I see this video on UA-cam's recommendation I liked it and I already subscribed to your channel and I'm glad to see such a concise and informative video about it. Thank you ma’am this gonna help me a lot ❤

I recently had this break myself. I had to schedule a whole week after my cast came off and needed to know what exercises I can do in the meantime. None of these are causing any pain so I think this is a good soft start for me while I await my upcoming appointment.
Broke my fifth metacarpal (shaft) falling on it during basketball, and just got my cast off after 4 weeks. Hurts so much, still swelling and stiff and weak. Going to try these exercises. Thank you!
Check out her other videos I broke the same bone and I've just started also let me know how it's been going and the improvement in your hand please after doing these exercises.
Unfortunately, follow up appointment last week with X-rays showed the fracture hadn’t quite healed, so it’s 3 more weeks in the cast/hard brace thing. :( I’ve started to do some of her massages and basic stretches, which do seem to help with pain and stiffness. Good luck with your hand.
@@quiet1933 hey man, if you want to speed up the healing process of the bone drink LOTS of milk/other calcium sources and protein will also help. Vitamin d3 (from the sun) will also aid in bone quality. Also staying active with the rest of your body (cardio, weight training legs or any other form of physical activity) will help the recovery due to the increased blood flow (yes bones also have blood flow, just not a lot)
I’m at my 4th week almost done to take it off I’ve slept a lot and it seems to be healing quick but how quick until u got the strength back to shoot the ball or moving the hand
Yay ! I have been going nuts trying to figure out how I got a boxer fracture in my car accident- it was the slamming on the breaks and my hand hitting the dashboard…. I can’t do any of these exercises yet, but thx for the tips!
Pain and unability to curl the pinky returned after 25 years. The last month I've been doing hand grip exercises with VERY careful attention to how the pinky gets involved. Lots of partial warm up and gripping with the pinky extended before you start to involve it. The results were stunning - the pain, stiffness, and weak feeling of the hand went away 100%. It was so strange to do household chores and feel my hand normal again! It was so strange to pickup the gripper one day (about 3 weeks into the exercises) and all of a sudden to discover super high strength and endurance. That is when I realized that the gripping exercises work - my hands were letting the damaged parts actually work and were not protecting them by blocking the movements. It's ana amazing feeling. But I still needed to work on completely touching the palm with the pinky. I'm overdriven when it comes to physical exercise so that was the moment where I overdid the hand grip exercise. The lesson from all this is - gripping exercises will help but MUST be used extremely careful and with attention to the rest as much as the attention to the actual exercise. That last day in the morning I did about 200 full squeezes (one every 3-5 seconds) with a grip that provides 65 lbs of resistance. From a fully extended finger position to complete fist contraction. It felt amazing. Squeezing fully - touching the two bars of the gripper and hear the metal sound. But in the evening I did about 50 more. That was the mistake. The pain returned that very evening. But I could tell it was not as serious as the condition a month ago. Healing now. Today, 3 days later, I was able to use the grip gadget again with great results. Gave me hope. Ivanko gripper - the best on the market, very fine adjustments and a variety of hand positions to load individual fingers from different angles. Best $50 you will ever spend. One important thing to pay attention to is the condition of your forearm muscles. When I started to do the grip exercises a month ago I had to start with forearm mobilization and massages multiple times a day to loosen the muscles. Lots of accumulated contractions in the front and the back of the forearm. That is a protection mechanism that keeps the pinky from getting involved in motions. See if you have limited flexibility of your forearm muscles. Most likely you will. Stretching works very well but you MUST approach it slowly. We are talking tendons here - they respond to training super slow - weeks and months. And require a variety of angles to respond. One last thing - you do not realize it but you do have bad habits that worsen the pinky problems. Look how you hold your computer mouse. How you hold the steering wheel. How you hold a knife. And very common - how do you hold your cell phone. Chances are it is all geared toward immobilizing the pinky and excluding it from motion. You MUST address these habits. Good luck.
I got a boxers fracture on my ring finger back in may of 2021 and i still can’t bend it back as much as I used to be able to. It feels like it needs to be cracked but I’m scared I’m gonna break it again. Also it causes a lot of pain when I try to crack it. Should I go back to the doctor and have it checked out? It’s been over a year now? Also what techniques do you think I should try? You know how you push down towards your palm to crack your fingers? I haven’t been able to do that with my ring finger because it hurts when I try to. Then when I try to bend it back towards the back of my hand it starts hurting a lot as well. I think you could seriously help me out with this insufferable pain I’ve been having. I wish I could go back in time. Thank you for helping me if you see this 🙏
@@burrowthechurro I can't give you any advice because I have no idea how your problem differs from mine. In other words - if you try someting I suggest and seriously hurt yourself you will think how stupid you were to listen to some internet guy you don't know. My only word of advice is this; Do not wish you can go back in time. Wish to find solutions in the future. There are solutions. It's just a matter of finding them. So keep looking and try new things very carefully.
Hey there. It's your number 1 fan. I've seen improvement, a lot, I'm back to work, not to heavy. Stiffness and ROM are still there in the mornings. I noticed my pinky is really weak, also stiff. Now that I can make a fist it barely has any strength. Should I get puddy? Any specific workout for pinky? Please and thanks. To anyone else reading this virtual hand care is a Godsend. Who knows how much she helped me.
Thank you very much. DR. WONDERFUL My pinky was bent backwards in the opposite direction. Backwards. I had to set it myself and pray. It finally healed and works again. They wanted to cut ✂️ it off. But it works great now. But hurts from time to time
I think i just damaged mine hitting a tennis serve last night! it kind of snapped on a hard serve. Kept playing and had trouble holding my racket. Hopeing I can rehab!
My fracture was 16 years ago when I was just a teen and it happened around the pisiform. What I wanna know is how I recover my grip strength and how can I get rid of my tendons pain of the extensor tendors. Mind you I didn't use cast on my hand at that time
Knuckle benders, pencil over pinky, pencil under pinky, then do hookfist into fist with pencil if you have the range. Which I do now. When I started. Even the highlighter was to small. If you have a boxers fracture and you are worried about recovery. Do exactly what this lady says. The coin thing along with other exercises. I can even make a fist.
Hi doctor I have Boxer's Fracture in my right hand and After removing the cast i see your video and applied it as you did so My finger movement is very good know but in the ulnar side i fell prominence in the bone and pain in tendon of flexor carpi ulnaris after i remove the cast is there any exercise to get rid of this prominence in distal ulna bone? thank you very much doctor I hope for a reply as soon as possible 😍
Thanks for this video doctor i got a boxers fracture 3 weeks ago and my doctor suggested to wear plaster for 3 weeks and now its removed. Im able to all these exercises that u mentioned with very very mild pain ( or no pain at all) the problem now is i want to punch things like before but the doctor said me ill need to wait atleast 3 months before i could fully use this hand. Will this fingers get it to the power i had before or will it be life long like this?
Thanks very very much. As I can't afford PT at hale hand center. These are definitely helping. I think I waited to long after healing. All my fingers are super stiff after 2 months. But my pinky is totally messed up. No motion except typical. I'm almost at 90 degrees on the flaction of bending knuckles. But pinky PIP is super stiff. Long way from a fist. So stiff so sore. I believe these exercises are helping me. I go back to work in a week. I need money to pay for PT. Rock and a hard place. THANKS FOR THE HELP. Any advice for a struggling 40 year old?
2 months is a long time for muscles and bones to be inactive. Just like any other muscle you’d train to get stronger in your body, you need to exercise a he muscles on a frequent basis to build the strength and mobility back up over time. - from a PT 😊
Looks like the video is made for me. I punched a wall some 40 days ago, got my ring and little fingers fractured. Had 3 wires inserted and plaster for a month. All of my fingers got stiff. My middle and index fingers have now got the movement, thanks to your one another video, I did all the exercises and it worked well. Now I have problem bending the little finger and straightening up the palm just like you showed. And I am sure it will help too. Thanks Michelle for such videos, you have given me hope to recover from the pain I'm going through mentally and physically. Will be back when I'm good.
Thank you Michelle. It worked really well. Now I can bend all of my fingers and straighten up the palm. It seems that the doctor have tilted my little finger just a little, now it moves a bit inwards when I bend it. Working on that now to get it straight.
hi doc i broke my middle, ring finger and pinky metacarpal and had a surgery will i be able to go boxing again and will it be weaker than before ty in advance
hey would these exercises be good for me had a surgery to fix my 5th metacarpal and im currently 2 months out from surgery and im struggling to raise my fingers and make a fist
Hi, is there any video for sagittal band rupture with extensor tendon subluxation. I'm almost recovered with yoke splint, want to know which exercises I can perform once I become pain free. Not using my hand since last 6 weeks. Many thanks.
My knuckles changed shape after doing this. I didn't have a fracture, but the cartilage changed. And even when I squeeze my hand from the sides it's not as flexible. It's worrying me. But it's probably partly my stressful situation at the minute and anxiety. I'm at about 90% range of motion after 7 months. I hope I can get back 100%.
@@Jojobizarreadv27 Also, because I was in a situation where I was moving house, I didn't start rehabbing it until 8 months after the incident. How far out are you since the incident?
@@RobLewis3 I'm a month and a half in. I struck a door out of anger and got the injury. Immediately went to the hospital and got X-rayed. As per the doctor's advice, I had surgery the next day. The installed k wires in my last two fingers to keep the bones in place and bandaged it with support. I couldn't see my knuckles and they appeared to be flattened. Had the k wires removed 2 weeks back. Now I'm undergoing physiotherapy. I have about 50-65% range of motion I'd say. I've learnt an important lesson and I hope to recover soon. Wishing you the very best on your recovery too brother 🙏
@@Jojobizarreadv27 It's a slow process. 1.5 months is nothing. I'm 16 months out. Just keep doing the rehab. Don't put a timeframe on it. Don't pressure yourself. Just try to relax into the exercises / stretches. Remember, that the muscles in hand/forearm are probably somewhat spasmed, so a lot of it should be soft-tissue relaxation. Like tractioning/massaging between the metacarpals, stretching/massaging the forearm flexors even. I found my forearm/wrist were somewhat in spasm. Massage the knuckle capsules. etc. But most importantly, listen to your physio and do exactly what they tell you, and the amount they tell you. Don't sit there and overdo it with the exercises, which is what I probably did. Focus on the exercises while you do them, then focus on your life afterwards. I found I probably focused a bit too much on my hand and it got on top of me psychologically at times. Give it time to heal. Don't rush. Go at a moderate pace. Good luck.

@@clintonclark5832 Thank you for the nice response. Most of the battle is really in one's head. Some years ago I volunteered at a hand therapy place. Most patients were given 1 to 3 sessions by the insurance company. No feedback by the doctor or therapist - the insurance company decides what you need and usually it is literally insulting. One to three sessions I kid you not. So here's my story how I think I helped a young guy see his life differently after some fireworks accident; He came with his mother, both hands looking more like barbeque than anything else. Complete with burnt black crust. Guy was looking down at the floor most of the time and being too quiet. I was supposed to help him draw circles. One of the 1-3 sessions the ins company gave him I guess. He was not into the circles. So I tricked him. Made him answer questions about himself in a machine gun style. So he forgets whatever he is thinking for a short time. At some point I asked him to stop that circle drawing and draw my mug instead. He laughed and started drawing as I continued the back-to-back questions about how he feels about the hand injury, school, girls, tests, his interests in drawing and whatever else he told me. Basic "How to make friends and influence people" Dale Carnegie tricks. I'd not let him stop - as soon as he finished his thought (or about to get to the end) I jumped at him with the next question. You get the picture. So after about 10 minutes I abruptly stopped my questions, asked him to look at what he drew and ... the magic happened. The guy went totally quiet and just stared at the sheet of paper. I asked to look - Jesus, it was an amazing portrait! 10 minutes before we were trying to freaking connect 2 lines to make a so-so circle. So much about the power of the mind. The mother walked in, sensed something is off, way off, and got weird and ultra protective. Asked what was going on and kind of started to loose it. Guy just stared at the sheet of paper. Would not utter a word. I walked out quietly while the therapist was handling the mother. I like to think that that day I turned his life around. But a more general lesson I myself learned was that hand traumas are ALL about both mind AND exercise. The therapist told me that in her decades long career she has learned one thing - if people do their rehab exercises miracles happen. if not - the entire body starts to deteriorate because you stop using one hand and problems with elbows, then shoulders, then spine, then low back, then hips, then knees start to develop. Over the years you literally end up handicapped because of one sided use of your hands. I am also convinced that it is a combination of mental and physical deterioration that slowly leads to that point. And both are addressable - up to you to keep them up. So here I am - cured myself from 25 year long back pain using the most dangerous exercise of all - deadlift - in a super controlled manner. And now the hand gripper. Since 4 days ago when I wrote the original response describing how I overdid the dangerous but so beneficial gripping exercise I am back to 100% squeezing the gripper. Tonight, just 30 min ago the amazing feeling of no-pain or weird feeling in the pinky returned. I will probably make a video about it all when I prove to myself that it works. But just like with the deadlift (an exercise that has injured and crippled many guys) it is all in the FEEL how much is too much and backing off and coming back at it. Can't really teach that easily to anybody. Physical trauma has thought me a lot - just like you said "we can become better from it". Yes we can. I know that for sure.
@@GreatWhiteNiko thanks a lot for your message. So you hurt yourself deadlifting. I love how you said mind and body it takes. So you said that you are finally experiencing relief in your pinky. Did you have a boxers fracture?

Thank you for the great video Michelle, I love your channel. I've got a boxer's fracture (4-5 metacarpal) a month ago and I was in a cast for three weeks. I'm not sure if it safe to do these exercises yet? I tried them just for a bit and I have no issues in the range of motion but I still have pains when I move it. I would love to know what you think.
Hi Ido! Thanks for the kind words! If your doctor took you out of your cast and didn't put anything else on you, that usually means they want you to start moving. Your doctor should have given you some restrictions and probably took an xray that showed your bone healing. It is always wise to check with them, if you have concerns. If you are free to start moving then usually the pain is from the tendons moving over your fracture site. Don't push too hard in the beginning, you should notice improvements in just a few days!
Hello doctor! So I'm a boxer but I actually didn't brake my hands boxing. I broke the phallanx (right on top of the knuckle) of my pinky finger wakeboarding, the handle got stuck on my pinky finger and kinda of swooped it sideways breaking it, not a total brake but yeah 4 weeks splint (I'm halfway). How should I protect my finger when I return to boxing, should I over-protect it with the handwraps, maybe aplly some cotton to make a sort of padding and then wrap my hands normally? I'm scared of rebraking it or getting too much pain but also can't wait to go back.
Hello there. I broke my hand a little over a year ago. (classic boxer fracture) my name is Clinton. Your videos have helped so much. All of them. Especially the pencil curl into fist. I have almost 100% mobility back. IBut my wrist and pinky are feeling weak. Any advice or exercises? Please and thanks.
I am having my stiches removed today, and I am starting with excersise, I had 3 pins in palm, and my last (smalest finger) cant bend or straight all the way - is this because of th einjury, or because I was not moving it for two months I had pins and partial cascet on? Also, did you say to repeat those excersises every hour? What is the average time person return most of his finger mobility? My bone has healed "like a stone" , meaning great, but now I need to handle my reduced mobility - how long peopl eusually take to recover (I know every case is unique, but we are speaking in general). I am a 44 old male
Hello! Watched the video, and I've been trying these and other exercises, but I still can't get my pinky to close into a fist. I struggle with the flexibility at 4:41..I am able to slightly move the tip of my pinky (max angle of 45º) then the joint after that I can move to 90º. But if I try them both together, I only get my pinky to "hook" if that makes sense...Should I also be massaging my hand? I've been to PT and the doc said that my tendons are getting caught/blocked near my palm tendon? Have you ever come across this? I've been doing PT since my pins were removed in January..Any additional help would be awesome, and thanks for these great videos!!!
Cesar Thanks for checking out my video! It sounds like when you attempt to make a full fist with all 3 joints you lose the ability to bend your knuckle and do what is called a 'hook' which you explained well. This is common when the tendons on the back of the hand are very tight. But you said the doctor thinks your tendon is getting caught in your palm. That could indicate something different. It is hard to determine what is going on without seeing you move and more details. I am glad you are seeing PT however do they specialize in hands? The hand is tricky. I do help people through a private online platform which may be helpful for another set of eyes of what is going on. You can email me at info@virtualhandcare.com.
@@VirtualHandCare No problem, thanks for making these! I’ve have a question. I’ve had my boxer’s fracture a year ago. For two weeks I kept myself from going to doctors, eventually heading to the office and asking for help. The cast was applied, and after a period of time (probably couple weeks, the memory is hazy) I returned for possible treatment. The specialist concluded with review that it is unnecessary for a surgery, however, if I feel discomfort I should be obliged to return. I was also told that it would return into the original position. A year since the case, I still haven’t got the knuckle in the right place, I should’ve obviously anticipated that the day it got broken. The pinkie is tid bit shorter. Though it is completely functional, and I do not experience major discomfort, though I’m dissatisfied with the look of it, and a certain aspect of its position, as there is some discomfort when it comes to certain activities. Is it still possible for me return the knuckle back in its former place? I believe I would need an advise from a specialist. Is there a small chance I could do it myself? A stupid question, but it’s better to be aware.
This is not a stupid question at all! But it definitely is one that a specialist can answer after they evaluate and assess your finger by seeing your finger.
@@VirtualHandCare same happen to me ive been with this injury for 5 weeks or 6 and just yesterday I came into the doctors do you think I’m going to need surgery or not
I recently had a car accident and the injury I had was to my middle finger. its been a month and ive still got swelling to my metacarpophalangeal joint.
Had pins put in as I had a break at the neck of the fifth metacarpal. Just got my cast off and I’m currently at week 4. A lot of swelling and the range of motion is very limited maybe 20 to 30 degrees if that. I don’t think I can do any of these exercises without pain yet😂 hopefully soon
@@praneshchow just cramping when I try to make a fist. Also have a lot of swelling in my pinky. I’m on week 5 and a couple days but I can’t move the joints in my finger or close my fist. Starting to think I ruptured the tendon that closes the hand
@@Dibi1821 Already 39 days passed but i can't move my 4th and 5th fingers. I can't band or move my hand. Making fist impossible for me. Just simple move I can do but not much. My 2nd xray report shows broken bone same as before. But one thing I saw the joint are attached. 😬 I am depressed about my healing. 😞 Do you practice any exercises for it? Does you hand positions right in xray? I hope you also recover soon.
@@praneshchow I also hope you recover soon. Just know we are in this together😁 yeah I went to physio. He’s pretty much trying to get me to flex my fingers into a fist while forcing my pinky into a fist and holding that for 5 seconds then extending again. I’m in the same position as you though. Still can’t make a fist limited range of motion. Keep me updated on your injury. Yes my injury is in perfect alignment on X-ray post surgery Also recommend this ladys mobility exercises in another video. But I’m not a Dr so take what I say with a grain of salt lol
I just removed my cast and its pretty hard to do those exercises. Is it normal for it to hurt when I try to extent it fully or make a fist? Cause the doctor said it was fine but I really feel concerned
Hi is there anything I can doo for improving grip i had metacarpnal 8 years ago and I've recently started work in a carpet store all day im ether pulling carpet out or cutting and recently my hand has been in terrible pain
I know this is late, but try farmers walks holding the weight with your hand close to the front of the dumbbell, and put a kilo or two extra on the back of the weight to make it so that your pinky finger is having to work. If you do right, you’ll really feel the muscle burning. I had to do it for weight lifting as my pinky grip was so weak, and it didn’t take long and it got stronger pretty quickly. Like within a weak or two.
daniel cano same here, I was in jdc and it took them 2 weeks to get me to the ortho, I have a removable cast but haven’t been wearing it. The fracture is visible but idk if it will go away. I was told check back in 4 weeks...I’ll see how it goes

Or will it be permanent? Plz help
For 6 weeks I wore pins for the 4th and 5th metacarpal bone, after removing the pins, I can't straighten my hand all the way, I can't open it all the way. Some advice maybe ?
Just constantly making fist and open palm, be sure to force it, done that in 3 weeks after surgery, my doctor threatened me it would be permanent if i dont do that
I’m a nursing student, just got accepted I start in January. And I just so happen to have this injury. It has been a good review of the stages that lead to remodeling. I have been released by my doctor, did 2 weeks in night splint, raising the pinky slightly (extension). Making a fist is easy with zero pain. However, extension is a little bit of sharp pain still. So my question…. I believe I am having an issue with extension because of the fracture callus formation. My knuckle looks much bigger than it should. Maybe that’s why I can’t fully extend yet. I know bone remodeling won’t finish for several more months (it has been 2 and a half months since the injury occurred) and I am curious how much the bony callus usually reduces for a minor non surgery boxers fracture. And what can I do to work on extension/should I just expect it to get better after the fracture callus reduces. Thanks!!!
You are correct. Bony callus remodeling phase will take several months-years. This video can be very helpful to get extension- ua-cam.com/video/FfFK4e8sviY/v-deo.html and I have a few pearls in this one too- ua-cam.com/video/GEUV37qkimM/v-deo.html
How is it now, James? In my case, it's been 1 week since I took off the cast. What worries me is the lack of extension. When I try to high-five, my pinky always stays tilted and my range of motion, regarding extension, is very limited. Also, there is a visible bump that I believe is the callus formation. Did it get better with time? Are you able to fully extend now?
@@MiguelPisani it gets better over time. You’ll be given a night splint eventually. Wear it for sure. It’s a splint that holds you pinky extended like it should be for high five. As far as for me, it’s getting better. But not back to normal. And it’s been 5 months

@@quiet1933 I’m at the exact same stage as you were when you made this comment. How are you feeling now?

Hi Rob.. can you please give us an update about your situation?
@@Jojobizarreadv27 I am nearly back to 100% range of motion, with no pain. But I did do a lot of flexibility and strengthening.
Good luck.

@@clintonclark5832 Thank you for the nice response. Most of the battle is really in one's head. Some years ago I volunteered at a hand therapy place. Most patients were given 1 to 3 sessions by the insurance company. No feedback by the doctor or therapist - the insurance company decides what you need and usually it is literally insulting. One to three sessions I kid you not. So here's my story how I think I helped a young guy see his life differently after some fireworks accident;
He came with his mother, both hands looking more like barbeque than anything else.
@@clintonclark5832 No, no. I restored my lower back 100% by doing deadlifts in specific ways. My low back hurt me for 25 years (hernia). Now it is absolutely 100% healed.
Yes, I did have a boxer's fracture. 25 years ago. The pain returned this last year. When swelling and increased temperature in the area started to show up on some days I started to do the gripper exercises. So far the results are out of this world ( I work with heavy tools and handle them al day long) - no pain. Amazing!

I didn't visit the doctor again... Now it's a little crooked and there's tenderness.. Kinda restricted movement too.. What can I do??? And will it be like it was before the accident?

Can we do boxing after healing of this fracture

It's interesting that you say the tendons on the back of my hand are tight--I've been mainly massaging the palm side of things..As far as my PT, I don't know if her specialty is hands, but I will check..Yeah, I will contact you for more details--I'd really appreciate the help! Thank you!
Did you heal.... Can you make a full fist?
@@briangatiu8662 sorry, I didnt get the notification..its been about a year and a half, and while I can grab things (swing a baseball bat, grab on to a pullup bar) I cant fully make a fist. However, when I first started, I couldnt even bend ANY part of my pinky. Now, I can bend the tip, the middle, but unfortunately, not the tip of it to my palm, if that makes sense. I am still doing my exercises, but I still cant..but I am 90% better, and I was able to play baseball and swing a bat. So if you have this, keep at it.

I know this is late, but try farmers walks holding the weight with your hand close to the front of the dumbbell, and put a kilo or two extra on the back of the weight to make it so that your pinky finger is having to work. Like within a weak or two.

Broke my metacarpal bone while playing volleyball after one month my bone is fixed but I lose my grip strength and wrist is also got weakened.....I'm gonna try these for next one month
