    With something that heavy the only option is more skids. You need to spread the weight over a bigger surface area. The other option is wider skids, something 1' to 2' wide. It creates more friction but it won't sink in. Everything is a trade off. Love the videos. Really inspiring to watch.

    By way of inspiration for the tractor turning problem:
    look at skies,
    look at the under pinnings
    of snow machines and other snow moving equipment. [ log moving equipment? ]
    Consider also how to use a ground hugging airfoil for your roof.
    In Old England, fences were managed with a Style. This is a sort of a ramp-like bridge. Good luck!

    I had a similar problem dragging another type of "sled structure" and my quick and dirty fix was to put two old snow shovels (without handles) backwards, one on each skid. Worked great! :)

      @bearytailfarm 7 років тому +5

      Daniel Jonasson I was going to suggest this too! A regular square point shovel would work much better than his current skids. Most farms I've been too have a pile of worn out or broken shovels stuffed in a corner somewhere. I'd permanently attach one @ all four corners to help with turns.

    With skids as you are trying to pull them and then turn, the turn will force the first skid to dig into the ground as the other skid starts picking up off the ground. Your chain has to be shorter then to avoid the skid to dig in. Great video but when you mentioned you would us the loader I taught you would hook the chain of the pallets and raise the end of the building to help you turn easier. As you stated the loader can pick up the side of the building very easily. Great videos and enjoy the ones where your brother teaches chainsaw use. Thank you Simeon for the great videos as all are very good to watch and your doing good for speaking English also. Continue the good work young man and enjoy your farming.

    The three-point hitch should be able to lift a lot more than the forks can. If you shorten the chains you should be able to hitch up that way and use the three point to lift the front as you pull. We moved an entire wood shed that way.

    I would put a pair of hard rubber wheels on the back of the egg mobile , then when you pick up the front of the egg mobile with your forks it will roll easier across the ground. It would not be so hard for the tractor to pull it around.Just a suggestion, enjoy your videos very much,keep up the good work.👍👍👍

    If you have a giant sized ski/sled curve on your metal plates they will ride over the pasture without digging into it. 👍🏻 ... and if you make them a quarter-sphere they will slide sideways, too.

  • @johnpalmierifarrierservice4771

    Nice design, but you may want to roll the front steel skids back on it's self so they cannot dig in the ground. Also loose the forks , and use your Bucket with chain hooks welded to the bucket. Lift the front of the egg tractor off the ground with your bucket and pull backwards John.

    • @Nortekj
      @Nortekj 7 років тому +2

      @ John Palmieri....... It would be better if he would just have slide plates on the far end of structure, have front end of tractor with added weight on the forks, then back the tractor to pulling end of structure and use the lift arms to pick up the front end of structure slightly and pull it like a trailer the unit will turn easily without ripping up sod, the weight of structure will aid in the traction of rear wheels and the additional weight on front end of tractor will keep it from wanting to raise the front wheels off the ground

  • @MrVailtown

    Mine chicken mobile is smaller, one thing I did was incorporated a ski style skid under mine.
    The runner ends have a 30 degree taper to the end , the sides against the ground are rounded off so no 90 corners on the lumber. Similar to horse drown sled, with all sharp edges removed so short turns do not bite into the land.
    You could now build a L or triangle shaped lift for the front, one that when you pull on front side mechanical advantage would lift front of the skids.
    Use short wide skis close to lift point .

    My Father always said you do as the Swedish people do when you live in Sweden. I believe that your eggemobile is wrong for your Swedish Farms with rocks in the felds and narrow rock walls between fields. You live in Farm country and I'm sure you could find a old hay wagon that has fit between those rock walls for many years. And you have a Band Saw Mill that you could mill a 4 X 4 or 6 X 6 long enough for a frame for a floor for a Eggemobile. The old hay wagon has a toung on the front with tires your eggemobile would probably be pulled with your 4 wheeler. You wanted thousands of chickens in your eggemobile so when making your laying boxes save every inch you can save it will mean in the end you can put more layers in your eggemobile. And make your roosting poles so you can lift them up to retreive your eggs if you lift every roosting pole it will mean you will have more space to walk on. So build your eggemobile on a old Haw Wagon frame and it will roll easier and you can pull it 10 to 15 farms away with ease

    I think and axle and wheels are in order. Pretty sure polyface farms mobile egg coop is on 4 wheels. It would move easier and put less strain on your tractor.

  • @bitsnpieces11

    On the pipe I've known it as a 'spreader bar'. They also it for the same purpose of spreading the lift on cranes. If you were to make the chain hookup shorter from the tractor it should lift the front of the 'eggmobile' up from the soil and not dig in as much. Or maybe put a largeish board, 4"x5", across the end and use the forks to lift that and move it, in reverse. At any rate you just need to try stuff out and make it work better as you go to have it working slick as a whistle in a bit. That's how they got the Shuttles to go up and back in one piece.

  • @TheOregonOutlaw
    @TheOregonOutlaw 7 років тому +6

    The Front Skids are far too small to support the weight and torque encountered during moves. Also, a larger footprint will greatly help when things are soft and muddy. These are all the same reasons many commercial farmer now used "Tracks" instead of wheels. LESS STRESS EASIER PATH - People sould learn this too! LOL

  • @kirstenwhitworth8079
    @kirstenwhitworth8079 7 років тому

    It looks like a good design - maybe longer but much more narrow? Could you make something like very big, wide cross-country skis for pulling across the fields? Could you put some kind of netting or wire on the walls to keep out predators?
    Maybe two or three smaller egg mobiles are better than one large one?

    Perhaps an easy technique to turn he eggmobile would be to lay some long thin boards on the ground where the skids will be moving and then use those for a slippery surface to move the eggmobile skids on. A quick lift with the fork lift would let you put those long boards in place on the grass to make the pivot effort so much easier. I think even a 25mm thick board would be strong enough if it was laying on a flat grassy field.

  • @digbyodell2924
    @digbyodell2924 7 років тому

    You would need a tractor that can handle it but the way I'd make it mobile is have the skid plates/wheels on the back end and fashion something in front to either pull or drag from; ideally with a ball hitch receiver so you could use a three point that you back up to, raise a bit and go. Put an axle and wheels on back and then you can go forwards or back without turning around.

    I'd be tempted to remove the middle one of the 5 lengthway sections to divide it into two even modules and run some structural beams across at the base to allow dragging the two narrower modules separately. Hopefully those might fit through the stone wall gateways. You could then place the two modules together as a single structure or perhaps place them separately?

    You can still "skid" the whole eggmobile using the tractor, without lifting and driving backwards. Just take some scrap wood, like a dismantled skid or pallet, using the top and bottom deckboards. Lay the deckboards perpendicular to the runners of the eggmobile, then it will allow the eggmobile to skid over top, and will allow turns as well. It could be done solo, but would go quicker if you had helpers to pick up the deckboards after the eggmobile has passed over them, and re-place them in front of the runners to be used again. Sort of like using and re-using rollers under a heavy object, except just skidding, not rolling.

    Love the Idea you have there/ Looks great. What I can see is that if you place 2 wheels on one open end and then lift the other end with the front end loader. You may have a better chance on moving around. Kind of like a wheel barrel with 2 wheels. Also the wheels can be put on only for transporting.

    How about running beams across the ends slightly above the ground so you can pick the end up with your forks and drag it. I also like Simon Burton's idea to slice it into two smaller units. I don't think that you'd even need to butt them together. The chickens shouldn't care if it's one big unit or two smaller ones.

  • @garyframe9682

    Great vids, thanks for sharing...have you considered splitting the eggmobile into two sections lengthwise? Would each section be narrow enough to fit through your rock wall openings? You'll need to make 2 new runners and columns to take the roof load but each section should be substantially lighter. One side could have a higher roof section that overlaps the lower, then you could move them one at a time and they would be easier to pull and turn as well.

    wheels, skids, tracks, chains axels etc. anyway you look at it or trying to solve it an eggmobile should be easilly mobile. this is . a key part of your operation and a main source of your income so it is hard to 'overoptimze' it. after all of the hard work that you put into building it (and will further invest in the future) as you said last week "some time you just have to invest" / on the surface, it seems to me that if will find a solution that make it "plug and go"' you will be able to get it back in the form of less moving time and engine hours, less stress on the structure so it will last longer and less stress on the layers from this frequnt intervention. wheels are probably what i would go for but you need to do it right and right takes time, in the meanwhile you should go to the nearest junk yard and put your hand on some ENGINE OIL SUMPS (or any thing of that nature) so you can easaly cut them to shape and put on the corners to give you some more manuverabilty and flxibility
