    It would be great to have had a lever handle with a wheel at the base, so you don't need to lift the mobile when moving it, the wheel will take the weight of it. But then when you want to park it, the handle lever will act as a brake!

    Hi, just about to take delivery on thirty hens. Was going to convert a small shed by putting wheels on. But anything made of wood in Portugal is quite expensive, I was wondering if you could give an approximation of the outside dimensions please. Have been inspired by your book to put a few lambs followed by the chickens through my 1acre pasture.

      If everybody stopped animal farming, who would have the time, to care.... Everything would be filled with trees'n'bees

    • @fieldbee3211
      @fieldbee3211 2 роки тому +2

      @@Randomiz500 without animal inputs, the biodiversity of the soil would really suffer. Yesterday, I learned that some 70 million bison were in North America before expanding colonial mentality nearly exterminated them, replacing them with now nearly 120 million cattle, sadly lots in CAFO's. Before that happened the Great Plains had annual Regeneration and the 12 ft tall grasses nearly hid the horses of the early euro-explorers who traveled areas with 12 foot diameter chestnut tree groves. The virtual oceans of vegetation and species in the plant communities had huge amounts of carbon stored deeply as roots. This bison episode had people who allowed this to happen, of course. Returning to a system of huge animal impacts could be closer to what might be a Sustainable situation. Bees and trees might thrive as well. Again.

    • @Randomiz500
      @Randomiz500 2 роки тому

      @@fieldbee3211 Everything suffers becoz of the unnormal practices of tractors, and the unnecessary food production for animals, they can find it themselfs. Animal impact can still come from Bison, if we just removed the feed crop for animal agg. 80% of farmland could go to rewilding.
      That would be a sustainable situation, compared to everything else ;-)
      Added to that permaculture could easily remove the 1/3 of the world from being dessert, and then we could add that to the 80% waste agg we have now. Leaving under 10% of the planet for humans, even in the year 2100. Which would be plenty!

  • @kirsten4896
    @kirsten4896 2 роки тому +1

    We built a similar chickshaw 2 years ago using Abundant Permaculture's design. Frame was beefier, but we need that in our harsh climate. Our wheels are solid plastic spoke wheels from Northern Tool for durability. Our rural land is thorny, bumpy, very windy. Our wheels are in center of frame which works very well for balance, roosts are on floor over the 1x1 wire as they're already "up off ground". Milk crates are removable self cleaning nesting boxes. Roof lid we used brackets and carabiners to lock from blowing open. Handle is removable aluminum fence runner that acts as prop when opening lid.

    I dig how you are enjoying the build.
    Your bottom mesh has surprisingly large openings, no concerns about predators?

    • @brut9530
      @brut9530 2 роки тому +1

      Richard has often said he doesn't have a predator problem, when it comes to chicks. Just those pesky voles that eat his vegetable garden.

    • @commentarytalk1446
      @commentarytalk1446 2 роки тому +1

      He said in one of his videos, the mesh is a combination between: Ok for the chicken's feet to stand on but wide enough for their waste to more easily dispose of downwards. I presume this uses the same dimensions as before? The details are always interesting and good observation (I could be wrong).

    • @slaplapdog
      @slaplapdog 2 роки тому

      @@brut9530 That makes sense.
      Predator pressure is very localized.
      I protect my chickens from the grasping paws of raccoons with 1/2" mesh, but some people need 1/4" mesh, to stop weasels.

    something that might help with the weight could be moving the wheels farther forward under the structure. shift the opening door to the back and the nest boxes to the tall wall and you wouldn't have to worry about the wheels interfering with openings and such

    Ridgedale version of a chickshaw. Exactly what I was starting to design in my head! Just acquired several bundles of culled cedar lumber material for framing it up. I'd add a cross member between the wheel frames for additional support, if moved with 25 hens or so it will be rather heavy and rough terrain could be a bad result.

    The original Ridgedale Egg-Mobile was something like 50-60 chickens for Small Farm Regenerative Agriculture Scale of small farm business.
    Is this model for Home-Stead scale?
    It's an excellent design and the details as some of the other commentators point out would be good to know eg space per chicken, air-flow and all the standards being met etc as well as waste removal or clean-up (all in the book for the larger cousin).
    I do know that such a model would help remove/reduce the rat problem of attraction to static chicken coups so that is already a big bonus but I wonder what the other intentional use cases are for this model?
    Thanks as always for your education, instruction and sharing.

    Nice design, great size for a family homestead or hobby farm. Adding 2x2 bracing as you mentioned should be sufficient to strengthen the handle.
    Could cut in a bird mouth joint or add 45 degree 2x4 wedge inside brackets to the bracing. ? Fun little project for you, especially with your son as a helper. 😊
