This tutorial is an example of why I love your videos. You don't just share and talk about your successes but you also show what you consider to be your failures and you explain to us why you feel they have failed. From this, we learn through your experiences the pitfalls of watercolour painting and how to avoid them. That is why you are such a great teacher and why I share your videos in a FB Watercolour Beginner group.👏👏👏
It is very difficult to find a good “teacher”. One who actually explains in detail. I look forward to more videos. Your work is amazing. Thank you so much.
Louise, I love your work and your tutorials. I especially LOVE when you present studies, what works and what doesn't, patience with the process, and thinking outside the box to achieve depth. After I thought the video was done I'm glad I stayed on and caught your bloopers. Thank you for sharing those! You are so relatable!!
I have learned so much from you. Joining you on Patreon was one of the best things I have done and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to grow as an artist. Thank you.
Thank you for the hard work creating these videos. I am sure the outtakes are exasperating but fun to see on this end. I don't know how many speeches and presentations I have gotten tongue twisted while giving. In those situations I certainly couldn't do a retake but eventually I just accepted that they were going to happen occasionally. Filming is much more challenging and demanding.
Thank you for including the bloopers at the end! It's nice to know that even someone as calm and collected as you doesn't always get it right the first time. I always appreciate the fact that you are so patient with your painting. It helps me remember to take a breath and step back once in a while.
Thank you Mam, You are wonderful teacher ! After almost 20 more years you do such meticulous approach , which is greatness of true human being !! God grace you always !!!
A fantastic tutorial and a great example of using a very limited palette. I also, like others appreciate you showing your mistakes and work that you found less favourable, Thanks very much Louise, David.
This was very useful for me, seeing all your notes. Sometimes I paint something, and I don't like it, but I find it difficult to see exactly what's wrong and how I might improve it. Your tutorial's also shown me that I might have to have several goes at the same subject before I get a good one. Thank you very much, Louise.
I'm so glad that you talked about how you plan your painting! On videos it seems like artists just jump in and paint but I didn't think that was the right thing to do. So this video just made my day!
Can’t wait to paint these grapes…I’m so glad that you said to take our time and don’t rush. I tend to rush and then I’m disappointed with the results…From now on I will obey your advice and enjoy the process. Thank you Louise for your teaching. It has helped me a great deal.
I throughly enjoyed this tutorial! Your instruction was excellent. The need for several layers of painting became very apparent as the realism developed with each layer! Thank you.
Hola Louise .
Thank you thank you! I love your style and technique. When I first started in Jan. I came upon a tutorial of yours that showed me how you use your paint using a dry pallet. This was ground breaking for me. This technique immediately made me advance so quickly as it made it so much easier to control my water pigment ratio. Thank you again!
Still life is very difficult to paint by and large. When I started to paint, my instructor had me paint the cliché pair of pears 🍐…. I’m glad I left the exercise aside after multiple failed results to continue painting something else. However, your grapes are exceptionally beautiful! Maybe when I’m very experienced I’ll paint a pair of decent pears :)
So helpful to see your planning process and studies. I can understand that in the end, they save you time and make your final painting successful. Thank you.
Huge thank you for another great tutorial Louise! You are incredibly generous in sharing your techniques. Can't say enough how much I appreciate it! Though I'm not a newbie in watercolor, but still I found some very useful tips for myself. Thank you once again for all the work you do to make these videos so informative and useful. Each of them is perfectly organized, well structured and soooo pleasant to watch. 😍 Lots of 💖 from Russia
Wonderful work. You are masterful at combining exacting technique and experience with genuinely artistic heart and aesthetics. So happy you share both your work and your process with everyone. ☮️
Beautiful! I love the translucency of the grape peels you were able to achieve. I find that very remarkable. I look forward to the Patreon video. btw, as far as saying, Alizarin, I often resort to saying to myself, "Where is my lizard paint?" lol

This is simply lovely! I am a big fan of your watercolor paintings... you have always inspired me to paint especially last year when I was neck deep in work ( I am a doctor and worked in a covid designated hospital) and I used to come home and paint away during nights just to keep my sanity intact. Thank you for all the amazing paintings. Also, could you do landscapes sometime? That would be so nice. 😊
Hi Louise. Always enjoy your videos. I was wondering how you transfer the pencil drawing to the watercolor paper for both your color/tone study and the final painting. Thanks.
Thanks for the preview of your grapes tutorial, Louise! One question, when I see the white highlights on each grape, I was thinking that maybe you'd refrain from painting water in those areas, so as to prevent the paint from spreading there, but it seems as if you do cover the entire grape with water for each layer, right?, and then just carefully avoid the highlights when applying color...? I think I have been using too much water in general, I'm afraid my paint would flow across the entire grape.
Hi Lydia, yes that's correct. I talk about this in the tutorial I'm making for Patreon. I do a few things. I use a smaller brush so I've got more control and less paint and I paint around the highlight but I make the highlight larger because the paint will creep into it and make it smaller. I use a tissue to dab at the highlight if the paint creeps too far and towards the end of the painting I use an eradicator brush to remove a little bit of paint where the highlight sits. If I was to leave a dry space where the highlight sat the paint could drift to the edge of the water and cause a hard edge around the highlight. I wanted soft edges around the highlight which is why I wet the entire grape. There's so much to think about when you paint in watercolour.
Thanks Karen. The reasons vary. Sometimes it might be a composition problem other times I might have made poor colour choices or I might have ruined it with the background I painted. Sometimes I might be trying too hard and I fight the paint and overwork it. Then I can see on the painting that I struggled. I find painting in watercolour is never easy.
I love your work! And you are an excellent teacher too! You are a very hard critic of your own work, but your sincerity is really pure gold because it help us to learn even further! You are wonderful! I wish you a merry Christmas! Big hug!
Louise, I get a kick out of your bloopers of trying to say some words. Hint: Spell out the word broken down with sounds like from the dictionary Question: When would you choose a 300lb paper over a 140lb Arches paper?

Stunningly beautiful! You are such a good teacher and a master of your medium. 👏
Thank you so much Emily. You're a sweetheart. 😘
That grapes 🍇 looks so fresh and beautiful. And the shiny colours..you are the best.
Finally you painted grapes I wanted. ‼️‼️‼️‼️ María from 🇨🇷Central América 🇨🇷 Costa Rica 🇨🇷
0:51 Your "failed" painting looks better than any iris I've ever attempted.

Exactly, planning before is the absolutely most important thing for watercolor painting!

This is stunning! I remember an art teacher once telling us to never use viridian because it is not a colour found in nature. This shows them!
Louise, I love your outtakes. You made me laugh out loud with alizarin, alizamum, alizizon. So funny, thank you for being a real person.

That’s a beautiful painting Louise. How common is it for layers to lift when you rewet them? How do you avoid that happening?
Thank you. You are so helpful with your teaching. Learning is always a pleasure. Marlene Canada
So glad! Thanks Marlene.
