I think he is talking about a different point of view. I totally agree with him, Dimash becomes THAT character which that song is written about. Like an actor and through the song he feels, lives and reflects every emotion of THAT character.

Samaltau is maybe the most beautiful kazakh folk song he has!!! it is both so strong and sad and his interpretarion is great. Dimash has the ability to express and communicate the meaning of any song thus he makes us fall in love or feel the sadness of the song. His mellismas which seems to be arabic influence and in most of the cases are the expression of a big sadness (sorry lack of English words to express what I want to say) are unique and really out of the common. This song was originally recorded in China and also is a master piece that you should see it. Run out of words when describing Dimash' s voice. First time I heard it couldn' t stop repeating it again and again.

The song is about a young man who is trudging along after being pulled from his elderly parents and his homeland to go off to war. He wonders if he will ever see them again and wonders what will happen for him as a soldier. Thank you.

Something to keep in mind with this performance: Dimash is fiercely proud of his country and is passionate about sharing it's culture with the world. I once watched a documentary in which his best friend/brother describes this particular song as one that touches Dimash deeply, since the soldier in the song is around Dimash's age and it involves a painful part of Kazakhstan's history. So much of what you're seeing in him here isn't really acting, but genuine passion and emotion - you almost always see this in him when he sings a song from his country. From the WIki page for the song: "In 1916, during the second year of Great War (World War I), the Russian Empire carried huge human and property losses. The burden of restocking was laid on subject nations. About 49 million hectares of fertile land were forcibly taken away during the war from Kazakhs. The owners were driven out into the barren wastes. Taxes increased form 3 to 15 times. For the needs of war, livestock and property were mass requisitioned. And finally it came to "requisition" of people. On 24th of June 1916, the Russian Tsar issued a decree that a half-million Central Asians, aged 19-43, were to be mobilised for army and labour brigades in the war effort. This decree was the spark for the Kazakh uprising, although the underlying reason was Russian colonisation and the usurpation of Kazakh lands.

The first minute left me literally speechless, I know nothing about music, so I never knew an instrument could sound like a wolf like that, it's haunting, yet so beautiful, it instantly transported me to an ancient Asian village surrounded by nature, I didn't know the story until now that you said it, but it seems like I got it pretty close huh? This one sounds so beautiful and majestic, it seems like Dimash's music is waking up my muse from its slumber 💗
That song just blows my mind because it so obviously resonates so strongly to him and the pride he has in his country. It's so filled with power and also subtlety. I loved his vocalizing in the middle which shows his skills, yet without resorting to his upper register. Nice reaction too. I'd recommend The Show Must Go ON next.

Dimash is not just singing a song, he is at the same time introducing his cultures to the rest of the world. This performance has got very spiritual feel, i can feel peace and calmness, its like going back to an ancient village passing thru rivers and mountains with wild animals and birds surrounding me😊😊
Is it just me or during the changes of melody at 3:49 and 4:58 you can almost feel the thousands of conscripts being marched off, weary under the hot sun on dusty tracks, to the meat grinder of the front lines of WWI. Most of them never to see their home again. That is how I picture it anyway. So evocative.

As with many of Dimash’s Dears, I love hearing him sing traditional style Kazakh music- it really is breathtaking. It’s funny, with Daididau, there was a Gaelic feel in parts... as a Canadian, I have grown up with the opportunity to hear Canadian indigenous music also and the percussive pulse of Samaltau brings a similar sentiment. Dimash is a storyteller. He has that charisma that allows people to feel what he wants them to feel. He is - understandably - more emotive on stage (or performing in his studio) than he appears during interviews. In interviews, he seems cautious and a bit shy (not at all shy on stage!) - maybe I mean introspective? (Not introverted - there is a difference.). You’re right that these qualities make Dimash a good actor. Lovely reaction!

I like to watch your face as you react to Dimash, sometimes you look enthralled, it's hard not to be with Dimash, but you certainly do enjoy his voice and the fact that he does seem to put emotion in to whatever he sings.
I'm not sure I would describe his skills as acting (maybe it's a translation thing :)). I think he identifies with the singer and takes the song into himself so much that he actually BECOMES the music.
But your interpretation of what the music is saying, both on the surface and on a deep level, is excellent. Thank you.

Dimash is an academic who always thinks of how his teachers would rate his performance so he first researches the song and practices "til it's ripened" before he presents it. Acting is an important element in the Performing Arts.

Hej, Kuba, masz rację ta piosenka jest o żołnierzu, to jest historia z czasów I wojny światowej, wtedy Kazachowie byli zmuszeni służyć w carskiej armii. To jest opowieść o młodym mężczyźnie, który musiał opuścić swoje rodzinne strony (Samal Tau - Wietrzna Góra albo Góra Wiatrów) i szedł w stronę Syberii, w stronę Omska. W rodzinnej wiosce zostawił starzejących się rodziców i nie wie co się z nimi dzieje. Kazachowie zwykle śpiewają o autentycznych historiach. Jako nomadom pieśni służyły im do przechowywania wydarzeń w pamięci. Piosenka jest oczywiście w języku kazachskim. Instrumenty naśladują dźwięki zwierząt słyszanych w wiosce, którą opuścił psy, wilki a także szum wiatru i dźwięk płynącej wody. Instrument podobny do wiolonczeli nazywa się kobyz, długi flet to sybyzgy (ten sam flet jest używany w piosence Hello), jest jeszcze instrument, który naśladuje dźwięki wody - znam tylko jego angielską nazwę - waterstick :). Innych instrumentów nie znam :( Jęsli chcesz posłuchać kolejnej kazachskiej piosenki - posłuchaj MV Qairan Elim. This a tresure song of kazakhstan and Dimash sing this like no one. The musical instrument is from Kazajistán and name KOBIZ . This live performance with his instrumentalists friends is a firm favourite of mine. His live singing is impeccable like always, even sitting cross legged on a piano stool. Странная песня для солдата. Но в то же время правдивая. Уходя в бой , люди думают о чем? Нам не понять. Мы не ходили в бой. Мы не воевали, слава тебе Господи! Я думаю, что все , уходящие в бой , думают о своих близких. Ради кого они и идут в эту войну. По крайней мере у нас в России так было всегда.И в Казахстане тоже. Им не нужны были чужие земли, чужие богатства. Казахи всегда были самодостаточные. Земля, просторы, скот, пасущийся на этих просторах... Спасибо советской власти, образование появилось у детей. Что еще нужно? Когда немцев туда пересилили, вообще образование поднялось на недосягаемую высоту. К нам в Тольятти на завод приезжают разные люди, но казахов сразу видно: умные, вежливые, говорят по русски лучше местных!!! Прекрасные люди. Ни одного грубого слова! Ни каких унижений ,по отношению к женщинам. Молодцы парни и мужчины. Моя сестра работает на комплектации машин с отгрузкой . Говорит, что казахи- самые хорошие парни. When I listen to this Khastan traditional song, I cry. First bc of this young man's loss of innocence. I envision this teenager walking 15 miles bc of being forced to join the RUSSIAN MILITARY in the great war.

👉Because of the pandemic, the annual Tokyo Jazz Festival took place online. Dimash sings 2 songs, “SOS” and “Samaltau”, live in his home studio.
This song, very well known in Kazakhstan, was written when the Tsar forcibly recruited the young men from Kazakhstan during the First World War. They marched endless distances. Many did not understand what to do in a foreign country. Their fields withered and their wives, children and elderly parents were left alone.

I have already written many times in the comments that this song reminds me of a story my grandfather's life. In Samaltau, a Kazakh soldier is forcibly drawn into the tsarist army in 1916, goes to someone else's war, remembers his native country and is aware that he may never see his old parents and his native village again...🙄
During World War II, my grandfather was forcibly drafted into the Wehrmacht, he fought on the side of his enemy, he went through many terrible things, like choleric, appendage surgery or shrapnel shards in his lungs😟 He was taken prisoner by the Soviets, where he was building the Volga-Don canal, and had little chance of returning to his beloved wife (my grandmother) and his little daughter (my mother)💗 But a miracle happened!!! Together with a friend from the same neighborhood, they agreed with the Russkies that they were Poles and they were allowed to return. Thousands of kilometers of wandering... Grandfather happily returned home a year after the war, he had 4 more children and lived with Grandma for 50 years💖💖💖 Therefore, when I listen to Samaltau, I have tears in my eyes ... I wonder how this story ended?🙄

"what a pretty song" is a bit superficial way to call this. to feel the deep narrative, you need to know the heart-wrenching true story behind, read the lyrics translation, do some background reading and so on. i can't help crying every time i listen to this folk song in my mother tongue. the national instruments add another layer/dimension of all the deep, overwhelming emotions to it. So far, "SirHairless" has been by far the best one who gives utterly professional, profound and genuine analyses to Dimash's songs.
I love your insight about the soldier character. He is a strong soldier, and he courageously does his duty, and he will survive. It about nostalgia, being drafted to the Imperial Russian Army, going to fight in the Western Front against Germany, and the deprivation that war causes. Kazakhs and Poles fought together as Imperial subjects. 10% of Kazakhstan is in Eastern Europe. Kazakhstan and Ukraine borders are 600 kilometers apart. There is a small Polish, German, Ukrainian, Belarus and much larger Russian population.
Seeing Dimash performing traditional Kazakh songs is wonderful.
I consider myself so very lucky to experience Dimash on any platform.
He makes this World a better place.

Yes Dimash has really strong stage presence and a good actor!!.. Like Ogni pietra he is like a matador!!, and Adagio he is like crying, love is like a dream he is romantic and sensuel (but always pure and innocent) and I only love you he is hurt and heartbroken.. My favorite is love of tired swans (not the music video, if you choose to wach this dont pick with the music video!) breaks my heart, I dont know why.. Maybe cos of the story. Swans are the only monogam animals we have. And the music is really amazing!!.. Also would be great to hear you react to the song by Queen "show must go on". He couldnt speak english one week before he sang this song.
