This is the only place where I've ever heard a deep brood box referred to as a "deep super". Everywhere else, anything above a queen excluder - and only those - are called "honey super", or "[box depth] super", or just "super".. it seems that the "super" part means "above", as in "above the brood nest", which usually means above the excluder. And, people talk about their 5-5/8" high 10 frame supers weighing 50lb or more when full of honey.. the comb height in those frames is 4.75", compared with 8.5" of comb in deep frames.. so a 10 frame deep, used as a honey super, would end up weighing closer to 100lb when full.
Also, a second reason to avoid using deep boxes as honey supers, is that you'd need a larger centrifugal extractor to fit the deeper frames, and then the longer span between the (vertical in the centrifuge..) top and bottom bars would reduce comb support against centrifugal force, promoting breakage.
The thing which surprises me most about the various box depths, is that the shallow honey super and deep brood box use standard sawmill lumber at its full width - 1x6 at 5.625", and 1x10 at 9.625" respectively, but mediums use 1x8 which is cut down an inch, to 6.625". No lumber producer makes nominal 1x7, you don't get two mediums by ripping a (expensive, if available..) 1x12.. so why isn't the medium "standard" built around full-width 1x8 lumber? I don't know.. maybe this was a consequence of whatever extractor was popular then - like, people started building boxes and frames which would "just fit" into an extractor where the frame baskets offered a fat inch or so of clearance for the shallow frames. Just a guess...

I would agree that super is synonymous with surplus or above. It depends on the operation. Commercial extractors are set up for deeps and is often the only size they use. They also have equipment to help load those 100lb boxes. Interesting thoughts on lumber. Thanks for watching.
