- This week I decided to upgrade my shop vacuum dust collection system by installing a double blast gate to make it easier to switch between tools.

Ryan That is GREAT , I have a small shop also and have been using the small hoses for my collector and cyclone t my shopvac. Your use of the PVC elbows has open my mind to my future miter saw and my present radial saw dust collection ...

Awesome. I am planning a very similar setup (belt sander station + router table + mitre saw) and wanted to reduce the number of individual blast gates. This will work perfectly with my intended layout.

You could use clear acrylic tubing for the straights. That way you can see how easy the dust flies through it, and spot any potential clogs. Great Vid. I'm gonna have to build one for myself.
Where can you obtain the clear acrylic 2" tubing?
Lowes or Home Depot usually carry it.

I work with powder transfer (should have similar properties to saw dust) and we use both pushing and pulling in our transfer systems. Powder does not travel the same as fluid and the 90° elbows should not have a negative effect. Sweeping curves are not needed like they are with fluid. Nice job and thanks for the video.

Like it allot. Maybe a larger pick up for the miter saw. Looks like you are getting a little over flow of dust, easily fixxed with a larger pick up. Just a thought. Vinny

Same here.
Best solution I have seen for a small shop using central vacuum piping. I have set up Cyclone System with Shop Vac.... but had frustrations with different types of hoses and piping with different diameters. Amazing how hoses and piping can be so different. I plan to follow your method of extending my simple dust collection to maybe 4 stations much like you have in a medium size basement shop room near the furnace. Minimizing the breathing of the dust is so crucial and necessary.
Did you purchase your materials on line? Did you find the flexible tubing to the various tools came from same source? Did you find the various connections were different like from shop vacumn to separator to the connection out of separator to the individual tools seem to vary also. How did you deal with those differences? Also returned the blast gates I purchased at $8.00 each as I could not find piping etc to fit them.
I welcome your feedback and am going to watch your follow up video now.

i love that simple half stop idea. I have to give that is rouge smart. in exchange please take an advice from me as well, cause i feel pity on your Ridgid drill. Drill the center-, or pilot-hole trough first, then start to drill with the saw bit from both side. If you have like 1/3 pre-cut you will feel it when you have to speed up the drill, and just keep the drill almost steady and let the saw do the job. I know its not important in this case, but if you have cut from the other side as well, you don't rip the edges neither.
But i think this advice is not to you (i think you know that), but to those who watch this tutorial and they might think giving a headbutt on a workpiece is a must. ;)

Just a thought ? you might want to trim your right hand counter flush( remove the over hang ),,, seemed like the hose and cord could use that clearance, , ,,, great blast gate ,set up and location, plus you on a shop vac and not a dust collector,,, (shop vac typically have greater suction ,so the extra 90's should not be that big of a issue for all the hatters out there ,lol

Where possible use 45 deg. bends in lieu of 90 deg. for your vent piping and you'll improve the efficiency of the dust removal. You may have sufficient blower capacity already but the 45's would be better if you can use them. Nice shop!

You might look at Frank Howarth's channel. He did rather a neat dust extraction for the mitre saw that doubles as a kind of vacuum hold down.

I'm puzzled! Since dust can travel through both the back & underneath at the same time ( it does on mine & others I've seen ). Shouldn't you have allowed for that? With another connection solely for the router.
Nice blast gate, but that rocking table saw scares me a bit 😬
Even simpler low-tech solution to line up with the middle: position it where you want it and draw a pencil line on each side (on the cutting board) to show where to slide it to.

how do you like the dust collection on that rigid saw....I find it only collect half the dust....maybe I'm missing something as to make it suck the dust better.....not sure...love the saw and saw you have the same one....thought I'd ask

Do you have any issues with static from the PVC? I have heard it can be a problem, and potentially discharge a shock, or start a fire. I use a shop vac with clear tubes from shop vac, but would love to add more using this PVC...

a question I've been using my straight shop vac and have been thinking about moving it up into my rafters like I do a lot of things. But I don't know if it will have enough draw to pull stuff up amd them around my shop without clogging up. I see you are using smooth pipe for you're runs I guess that might help. As it sets now it has the stock flex hose and that is really prone to clogging. What size vac are you running a.d what is you're longest run.

That's a lot of pvc. Are you concerned about static electricity buildup that can cause a dust explosion?
Very nice work. I also watched your video on the initial installation of your dust collection system. A couple of questions: What level of horsepower shop vac is needed for this kind of setup? Do you prefer the cutting board material over wood for the sliding parts of your blast gates? Thanks so much.

Courious about the mitre saw boot behind the saw blade. Seems to pick up the saw dust very well. Most mitre saws blow the dust and chips all over. Did the boot come with your saw or did you make it?

Get rid of the vacuum altogether and get yourself a bouncy house inflator with a large fan on it. It will save your ears and will probably run cooler inside your vac cabinet.
Are you happy with how this works with your router table? How big a compartment do you have for the router under the table? Love the approach and will use something similar for a three way blast gate for my set up. Thank you.
