I think it was the back injury. The pain in his back made it harder for him to play a fast paced, high contact, leap and dunk style. He thought he could transition to a slower paced, get the ball in the post, back down a step or two and make a close-mid range shot that would cause less physical wear and tear and less back pain. He just didn't have the skill set, his greatness was athleticism based. Imagine if lebron james tore his acl in 2013, his career would've gone way different as he tried to become the new steph curry 3 point shooter and embarrassed himself out of the league.

I really think the 3 point explosion in the NBA can be traced back to pickup ball in gyms everywhere. If you've ever played pickup at your local gym you'd notice right away that games are played to 12 or 15 points with anything inside the 3 point line counted as 1 point and everything outside the 3 point line counted as 2. With this scoring system it was obvious that making 6 two point shots was much easier and quicker than making 12 one point shots. I've been playing pickup since 1998, yup I'm that old. Back in 98 guys still drove and didn't shoot much. As early as 2001-04 you would see teams only shoot 2's. So defense adapted to run these guys off the 3 point line but that just pushed the shooters back further. As early as 2002-08 you had guys with crazy range pulling up from logos. You couldn't go to a gym where there weren't guys who never missed even pulling up from 10 feet behind the line. Curry benefited from growing up playing ball during this time. He just brought the gym experience to the NBA. If you want to see what's going to take over the NBA next, go to your local gym and play some pickup.

Dwight's mentality was "I'm going to prove I'm more than a pick and roll center." to Shaq's criticisms, when it should have been "He says I can only pick and roll and dunk.. well I'm gonna win championships doing that and then he can't say anything." Again, it's the equivalent of LeBron getting criticized for not being able to shoot and can only drive to the basket, and then trying to be Steph for the rest of his career after that and barely driving to the basket as much.
Fact is... Dwight Howard was on the Lakers.. with D'Antoni as his coach and STEVE NASH as his point guard, as the BEST PICK AND ROLL CENTER IN THE LEAGUE with the BEST PICK AND ROLL POINT GUARD IN THE LEAGUE and possibly all time...with one of the BEST OFFENSIVE AND PICK AND ROLL COACHES OF ALL TIME... and decided "I don't feel like running pick and roll." ... THAT says it all.

You walk out, awkwardly put your arm around your brother and say 'that didnt happen, did it?' And after he walks away, you ask your parents 'Who said I did that? Since you got so many sources, I'm asking you?'
Like bro, dont be the 6 year old little brother. Just be a man and admit what you said lmao. Feel like that was just the start of that 'me vs the world' attitude he had. And throughout all lthat, I was still rooting for him. I mean he still had a successful career all things considered, but for a 3 time back to back defensive champ, he could have done SO much more with a better attitude.

Dwight Howard was actually playing well in Houston. Klay Thompson once said Houston was the toughest team for them at the time(This was when Chris Paul, Dwight and James Harden was on the team.). Something happened after he decided to not resign with Houston. Soon as he signed a 3 year contract with the Atlanta Hawks, they TRADED him before the beginning of the next season.
What's going on with him now is DEFINITELY not helping him( teams look at public reputation)get another chance to play in the NBA and end his career on his own terms(outside of him being close to 40).

The only reason Howard was the no. 1 player in All-Star voting was not because he was beloved, or considered the best player in the NBA, it was just because he was the only good center in the Eastern Conference in that era, and during that time the “center” position was still guaranteed to make the ASG starting lineup.
A few years later the center position got so bad, when even someone like Roy Hibbert could make the ASG starting lineup, they got rid of the center position in voting and just included forwards and guards.
So him being the top vote getter isn’t all that impressive, I don’t know who else the fans would have included on their ballot at the center position in the East.
