    Cone Mills is local to us, or was until it moved out of the US. It never occurred to me till I started regularly sewing how coveted the denim was. I think we still have a small local outlet, and now I am making that a definite stop! This pattern and your sew along is on my make 9 this year. I could not actually sew along with your original sew along but I am so glad these videos are here.

    I am one of those rare people who doesn't measure by hip size because I don't carry my weight in my hips, it's all in my butt and gut. The hip measurement makes pants look baggy and ill fitting. I definitely have to lengthen my crotch depth to account for this which is why I always make a muslin when trying a new pants pattern (and I rarely try a new pattern once I finally get one tweaked correctly). That being said, I need to conquer jeans because my favorite RTW are no longer being sold and mine have seen better days!! I've bought both the Ginger Jeans pattern and the new Itch to Stitch Mountainview Pull-on Jeans which I'm sorely tempted to try. Thanks for the tip on the bedsheet for the muslin!

      Those are both great patterns. The Mountain View’s would be a great one to start with. They dip your toes into jean making and are a bit easier to fit since they use such stretchy denim!

      @@TomKatStitchery how do you think this pattern compares with the Dawn straight leg jeans? I realise the Dawns are high waisted, but otherwise, do you have a preference? Just curious.

      @@faithmathingsdal79 I think for my body type (short torso) I prefer this pattern with the mid rise. However, for my daughter’s body (long torso) she prefers the Dawn Jeans.

    I am definitely interested in the waistband part. I’ve made several pairs of gingers and am still working on my preferences. In all jeans (RTW and me made) my waistband “wrinkles” as though it needs more structure to stay flat - so I did interface my most recent pair of gingers. So far so good. I don’t have gaping or falling down issues so haven’t tried twill tape yet. I also have one fold/wrinkle on the top of my fly - again I get it on RTW too, I think it’s where I bend. I wish I could figure out how to solve that. Love that I can watch this to see if there any tips I can use when I make my next pair.

    Hi Whitney. Great video. I always have an issue when serging a grown on fly. I'd like a nice finish but it's always messy. When you get to that spot could you possibly do a serging close up so I can see the error of my ways? It seems like such a weird curve. Thanks for all you do.

    By laying the lengthen and shorten line on top of each other does that not double the four inches being taken out? I usually pinch and fold, then tape.

    • @stacylorraine3130

      That is what I thought as well. She actually shortened it 8 inches.

    • @cecilehoare3053
      @cecilehoare3053 3 роки тому +1

      @@stacylorraine3130 I think since she took 2" out from the top and a half inch from below, that would be 5" still more than I think she had said, hopefully Whitney comes on and lets us know! lol

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 роки тому +2

      The cutting and overlapping is doing the same as folding out. I measured 2” above the line and then .5” below for a total of 2.5”. You could either fold the top line to meet the bottom line or cut the top line to meet the bottom line. Either way it just takes out the 2.5”.

    • @Evohoy
      @Evohoy 3 роки тому

      Thanks for replying Whitney. I’m always confused that you can pinch 5” out of the fabric but if you did that on the pattern it makes it too short. I didn’t realise you drew different measuring lines before cutting. Thanks for explaining.

    Questions? When you are sewing the Muslin, use the Seam Allowance for the pattern? If you make any adjustments, do you take the Muslin apart and use it for your pattern? I have final gotten my Jean fabric and am ready to get started. Thank you!!!!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 роки тому +1

      I do use the pattern’s seam allowance and as far as transferring alterations to my pattern, you can take the muslin apart if that’s easier for you. I typically just note the changes I need to make on the muslin and then just put those onto the pattern through measurements. Does that help or make sense?

    Hi! Thank you so much! I have been thinking about sewing my own jeans for a while now (Levi's keep dumping the models I like! Grr..), but jeans always seem so cumbersome to sew. I consider myself to be at a confident beginner level sewist. Would you recommend trying a commercial pattern/Big4 or an indie pattern for my first pair? Do you think this McCalls was easier to sew than, let's say.. the Dawn jeans or the Ash jeans?

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 роки тому +1

      I think the patterns are similar as far as level of skill required. I do think the independent pattern designers have MUCH better instructions and hold your hand really well along the way. They also tend to have less mistakes (though this particular pattern was drafted great!).

    Thank you so much for sharing your whole process! As always, I learn SO MUCH from seeing it all; ESPECIALLY re: the fabric choice and the fitting adjustments. If I have other patterns in my stash (the Jalie Eleonore pull on jeans - the one I'm leaning towards with my Covid/SIP/post chemo body - or CCP Ginger Jeans or CCP Morgan Jeans or MN Lander Pants), can I still follow along? Or will it be more confusing for me in my first foray into jeans? Also, I already have a spool of Mara 70 in that classic jeans-top-stitching-brassy-gold...does it matter that it's Mara 70 rather than Mara 30? And why add rivets, out of curiosity? Just curious, as this is my first time with jeans making. Thanks in advance.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  3 роки тому

      You can totally follow along with another pattern. The pull on jeans will be a bit different than these, but still pretty similar (and a great way to dip your toe into jeans making). The 70 will be fine for the top stitching. The rivets are put in to reinforce areas that get a lot of pull (like pockets).

      You possibly need a sway back adjustment and a contoured waistband would be a must if you have a large waist to hip ratio. I can’t say for sure without seeing it, but those are the two most common.
