Y'know I think you're right about that violating a binding vow taking away your cursed energy or debilitating you, but considering just how much the two main villains of the story respect binding vows and how uncertain Kenjaku is about the consequences it could be that violating a binding vow could cause any number of brutal consequences not just cursed restriction, like your technique malfunctioning or really powerful cursed spirits being attracted to you leading to a similar situation as when Junpei's mom found Sukuna's finger and she immediately got murked by a random spirit. It's like cursed energy itself is literally putting a curse on you.

When talking about binding vows,Sukuna gives the events of episode 5 as an example of not abiding by them. Yuji tried to use Sukuna without paying anything for it. But eventually,Yuji was kinda forced to pay by giving Sukuna an extended period of control.
I think that is actually how a binding vow with someone else is enforced. One way or another,you will be forced to pay what you owe. So perhaps if Mahito refused to heal Mechamaru with IT,then Mahito would lose control of his IT and it would be forcibly given to Mechamaru. Just like how Yuji lost control of his body.
Well, we don't know for certain if Yuji's loosing control in ep 5 was caused by trying to use Sukuna and don't offer anything in return. After all, he sustained heavy injuries and was mentally broken as well after the Finger Curse humiliated him. Still, even if those aren't the reasons, what happened to Yuji wasn't a binding vow. He never forged any pact with Sukuna with set conditions on how they switch. He just lost control since there were no vows in the first place.

We have seen people seemingly swap bodies in the recent chapters, mainly Yuji and Kusakabe. If someone swap into Miwa’s body and used a sword, expressly going against her binding vow, I wonder what would happen

Becoming Miwa might not even be the worst consequence. We've seen quite a few times where other people can reverse the restrictions you get. Someone as smart and has as many groupies as Sukuna/Kenjaku could make do with a few restrictions if their groupies could reverse it somehow. They could also get their allies to make then break their binding vows. (e.g.: Kenjaku just loses Mahito). Or what if Kenjaku gets Mahito to make the binding vow, then absorbs Mahito instead of having Mahito honor the promise to Mechamaru?
Losing curse energy is also not exactly devastating for Sukuna, he's still huge with four arms and has like other cursed tools that poses threats for top tier sorcerers.
My hypothesis is that all binding vows just reverses Gege's intention originally laid out for that event.
If Mahito breaks his vow with Mechamaru, Gege writes the story so that Kenjaku's plans fail (the vow was working towards Kenjaku's plans working)
If Sukuna breaks his vow, he will fail to control Megumi (original intention of his vow with Yuji).
The retribution must be more abstract than just permanently losing your powers which is so meh, we got a dude's whole powerset around this idea.

We all know that binding vow was from HxH. The binding vow was not clear from the start as they only discuss the benefits. The best bet is losing all your curse energy and turn into a normal human being.

Yea I wondered the same specifically what's meant when Sukuna says he had megumi take the brunt of Infinite Void while he reaped the adaptation. Is he implying everytime that he switched control with megumi then forcefully took control back over when the domain clash was over
I'd say yes. Since [MANGA SPOILERS] kenjaku kept geto's ability by taking his BODY I'd assume that it's linked to the body,. TLDR: Yes

I made a Nen ability with the restriction tax heavily on the user if it's break any of the 4 rules imposed... So maybe that's the way it work: break the rules, I break your legs.
If it works that way it has a lot of sense nobody wants to break it
I think in cases like nanami, once he set the vow, its automatic. Like he doesn't actively have to use under 80%, the vow justs restricts his energy to 80% until overtime.
It makes some sense as overtime automatically boosts his power too.
What if binding vows on the future work on the level of the binding vows somehow "knowing" the future, for example Miwa's strike didnt work on kenjaku because at some point she will pick up a sword again, intentionally or not, and in those cases, the binding vows simply fail because you didnt have the resolve for them
Since we dont know when someone will be punished does that mean sukuna can still be punished for hurting yuji when he did the enchain thing
I feel like there's something that's summoned and comes after you or your cursed technique gets taken away 😅
Miwas vow always did confuse me due to the way personal binding vows were said to work. You made a good point though, maybe the vow could be seen as one between her and her sword (or all swords) and that’s why she can’t go against it?
SPOILERS AHEAD:
I saw a theory on Reddit that Yuji actually did put himself on the Binding Vow, and Sukuna broke it, but the consequences weren't explicitly immediate. Kenjaku said that breaking a Binding Vow will result in consequences (Note: I'm 99% sure that's not what he said, but the point still stands), which, yeah, it's pretty ambigous, but it's not very clear overall. People can argue that Sukuna knows about Binding Vows, but as far as we know, he never even broke a Binding Vow before to actually see what happens.
Believe it or not, it's a pretty good theory, but I like to think that Yuji is just way too selfless to think of the word "Anyone" as in everyone except him.
Jallomoth brought up this theory in one of his iceberg videos in relation to Sukuna's papercut. I like it a lot and hope that the punishment will strike Sukuna at a pivotal moment and maybe we will get an insight into the nature of cursed energy, the soul and the dream realm, in the case that the theory holds

Its an interesting theory but if what Kenjaku told us about switching bodies nullifying vows is true, then it might not even matter since Sukuna is in a different body now.

"The Cursed Objects that I provided are what's left of the sorcerers with whom I painstakingly made vows with a millennium ago. However I did not only enter into contracts with Sorcerers. But those vows.. became null when I obtained this body." Now I could be wrong and he could've been referring to both but I think it makes a little sense seeing that he had Geto's body

@@Kelps.mp4 Its shown that the body and soul are in some way interlinked. Seen by Geto's hand resisting Kenjaku at the sight of Gojo about to be sealed and by how Idel Transfiguration works. Mahito and Kenjaku briefly discuss their different views on how the body and soul are related so in the jjk universe switching bodies may modify the soul enough to not be considered the same soul.

I genuinely think our protagonists win condition is not by severing megumi from sukuna but somehow enabling sukuna to break the binding vow he made with yuji. As you said there’s been too much build up and we’ve never seen an example of a broken vow. Would be insane if that’s their master plan after all.
I don't see how they could do it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the deal wasn't that Sukuna would revive Itadori that one time in exchange for 5 or so minutes of control where he couldn't wound anyone? And sukuna used that time to take over Megumi's body?
I think that vow is already done and over with in universe. Itadori had his 1up, Sukuna had his time in control
Plus, Sukuna's only restriction besides time in control was that he could not wound anyone, and he CUT GOJO IN HALF. Unless switching bodies is a workaround somehow, if the vow was still in effect, sukuna broke it already

I just thought about this but what if yuji uses the soul swap to trap sukuna for a temporary time and then the binding vow will be in tact so yuji will refuse to switch for the one minute and since sukuna isn’t allowed to hurt anyone everyone can attack him and kill him and then yuji will die surrounded by everyone he loves… I just spoiled the ending lmaooo

*If Miwa said she wouldn't pick up another weapon again then it likely would have been more powerful, she can always use a spear or any other weapon. Even sword like weapons that aren't exactly swords.*
I personally think binding vows also have to mean something personally and context. Miwa not picking up another weapon doesn’t really mean…anything. She only cares about being a sorcerer for money, she can just get another job. She doesn’t value sorcery, strength, or power like others such as Sukuna, Gojo, Yuta, or Kenjaku, so of course her binding vow revolving the sword doesn’t do much of anything. Now imagine someone with actual PASSION like Yuki made a binding vow like that? Half the planet would’ve been reduced to dust.
As far as a binding vow between two people, Yuta would count, no? Or does him being the one who cursed Rika not make it count since at that point Rika would be like, and extension of himself?

It was actually stated if nanami violates his binding vow then his boost goes from 120% to 101% instead. The worse case in self made vow is that u lose the benefit
I like the idea that breaking a binding vow with someone else would bring upon a karmic punishment. Like still paying the price you had to pay but tenfold. Something along those lines.
Like Sukuna who made a binding vow to not hurt anyone, but still doing so, to end up pacified for life. To the point he can no longer conceivably hurt anybody.

Kenjaku: "we don't know how or when the penalty will be inflicted", what if maybe sukuna broke his binding vow with yuji without knowing? What if there was a twist that yuji actually thought of himself when said conditioned sukuna not to hurt anyone, but instead of the penalty being inflicted right when he broke the vow its gonna be inflicted later? Or it got inflicted but in a way that no one noticed yet, in a way that we are gonna discover later as a twist.
If I’m not mistaken there was an example that was given. When Itadori switched with Sukuna against the first special grade he couldn’t switch back because it was used to only benefit him.
No, that was different. He couldn't revert back because he didn't make any binding vow and switched recklessly with sukuna.

I think that in Miwa case, she added to her binding vow that she CAN'T break, an actually permanent binding vow.
I bet miwo would just not have any cursed energy while using the katana, which is kinda the only way a katana is useful, or she'll be incapable of picking it up at all by mental affliction or incapability.
What would happen if someone with a memory erasing technique showed their hand then erased the memory of the person they showed it to? They still revealed their technique, even if the other person has no recollection of it. Would that mean they could show their hand again and have the benefits stack?

I believe it may have already been fulfilled. Ken asks Sukuna to postpone his fight with Gojo (right after he escapes the prison realm) until he has finished doing what he wants him to do, the fact the fight has happened implies whatever Ken wanted Sukuna to do has been done.

Really dumb question here with spoilers: kenjaku is a cursed spirit that takes over people’s bodies. He took over Getos body because he had cursed spirit manipulation and he wanted it for himself. What would have happened if kenjaku tried to use cursed spirit manipulation on himself? Would it even work? Would he…capture himself?
So Kenny is actually a sorcerer with a body hopping technique and not a cursed spirit

Weird theory time: yuji will take over sukunas soul temporarily and their binding vow will once again be activated, maybe yuji will have to hurt someone and then the binding vows punishment will be enacted on sukunas,resulting in the death of sukunas soul

I'd really like it if it was something ironic regarding what your binding vow was. If miwa picks a sword her hands fall off, If mahito broke it he can never use soul transfiguration in others, if sukuna didn't revive yuji (and in some other way yuji revived) he would never be able to get control of yuji's body no matter what, if Ui Ui elevates his curse energy without Mei Mei's permission he can never use any curse energy.

to clarify, this means the consequences would eb entirely unkown until they happen, for example sukuna might have entirely lost his ability to incarnate if he broke his vow with yuji
Highly doubt Gege will show the consequences of breaking a binding vow at this point in the series chalk it up to another thing that wont be explained in this series.
What I dont get is that binding vows between people are supposed to be voluntary, right? In that the person accepting the vow must carry out their side of the bargain willingly, or face dire consequences. But Yuji was basically forced to switch with Sukuna when he shouted enchain, as if it were mind control.
because that was the conditions of the binding vow Yuji voluntarily agreed to when he fought Sukuna to bring himself back to life. Sukuna was allowed full control for 1 minute
