Anita Baker came to Baltimore md, apr 1987 on her rapture tour at the Lyric theatre. Me my girlfriend and 3 other couples bought tickets to see her. It was a magnificent show. 8 of us 4 couples about 5 rows back. I was 27, we all were in our late 20's . after the show we went to a club in east Baltimore called 32nd street plaza. If you are from those days you know what I'm talking about. being in your 20s in the 1980s couldn't get any better than that, I bought all the tickets on my credit card the day they went on sale. they were sold out in about an hour. on the day of the show I surprised everybody by renting a limo with Champaine, the whole kit and Kaboodle . That was one of the best days of my life. And I thank the Most High for allowing me to enjoy it.
Those "thumbs down" people have never truly made love. Anita Baker's voice just reminds you of that person that ROCKED YOUR WORLD and put a smile on your face. There is no way a person who has been in love could NOT feel the LOVE in her voice!
Underrated queen of quiet storm!!! It's time for all of her music to be on streaming sites too. Mary's demo tape also featured a cover of this classic by Ms. Baker. And 25 years later, they performed this at the BET Awards. '80s R&B is forever timeless!!! Salute to the OGs. #SoulTrain
I hope they add Anita to all the major streaming sites so her legacy will continue BUT this QUEEN is farrrr from underrated, sir, she has had an amazing career and enjoys a huge following.
Absolutely. I meant underrated in the way that she should have gotten way more props in the ranks of great female artists. Nevertheless, she's an icon. My parents went to see her live at Radio City Music Hall for their anniversary a month ago. They told me she _still_ got that range!!@@Zanaaa50
Without a shadow of a doubt. And for this is for every female SINGER who ever Graced the microphone. I love you all. BUT, this woman right here ...will always be number one and have a special place in my heart forever
Anita Baker is celebrating her 66th birthday today, January 26, 2024. She is an American singer-songwriter known for her soulful ballads, particularly from the height of the Quiet Storm period in the 1980s. Starting her career in the late 1970s with the funk band Chapter 8, Baker released her first solo album, The Songstress, in 1983. In 1986, she rose to fame following the release of her Platinum-selling second album, Rapture, which included the Grammy-winning single "Sweet Love". As of 2017, Baker has won eight Grammy Awards and has four Platinum albums, along with two Gold albums. Baker is a contralto with a wide range of octaves. She was born in Toledo, Ohio on January 26, 1958
I remember this like it was yesterday. Guest artists would normally perform 2 songs. Anita performed multiple songs. This was not common on Soul Train......but we were here for it.
I know. If she was actually singing this classic ballad, she would be really performing this live with different instrumentation backing her up. This is the album version.
Baker teamed with former Chapter 8 bandmate Michael Powell for her wonderful Elektra debut, Rapture, released on March 20, 1986. It was an instant classic that virtually defined adult soul for the next decade and thrust Baker to the forefront of popular music. The first single, "Watch Your Step," was a moderate Soul hit, but it was the catchy follow up ballad, "Sweet Love," that brought across-the-board attention to the album and resulted in Baker winning 1986 Grammy Awards for best R&B Female Vocalist and best R&B Song. A legendary career was cemented with Rapture. The album still sounds great all these years later and Anita Baker remains a part of our lives as an all-time singer supreme.

Love this channel, but the logo and pop ups over the videos are so annoying, especially that sound. Would be so much better if the videos are left clean and the info is in the description.
Who in the you know who edit and uploads these classic performances? The lack of knowledge of when these timeless performances aired is so disrespectful! AND CLEARLY whoever doesn't know anything about black music. Everyone KNOWS the Rapture album popped off in '86!
Actually..the videos * used to be left clean*..without the artist in a BOX..AND I used to love watching them..not so much now..Don Cornelius was AWESOME!!

This appearance had to be 1986 or 1987. 👑 Anita Baker, #Songstress is phenomenal! 🎤🎶

Anita has so much talent. She never needed to lip sync and she always killed it live. I guess the show made her do it.

I know. If she was actually singing this classic ballad, she would be really performing this live with different instrumentation backing her up. This is the album version.

Love AB, but this is not 1980. This song wasn’t out for years later.

What happened to the Don Cornelius introduction?
Typo it’s in 1986 not 1980
❤❤❤❤👌👏👏👏👏👏🎼♾️
This was not exactly in the year 1980 but in the late 80s maybe 88 or 89 whoever made this video either don't got a clue or they young
This is not 1980!!!!!
I was like 1980!!!!! No way!!! Lol
The year was 1986 not 1980
There's a reason why this album sold 8 million units
Rapture did not come out in 1980 it came out in 1986 😕
Yes 😒Maybe 🙄
Such a sexy voice!
Not 1980. The Soul Train intern needs to fix that
