I am very impressed by this guide how fluent and well detailed it is. Amazing guide ! So many things I couldn't find anywhere else not even icy veins is this good !
Bro, I’m gonna be honest with you. This is probably the best and in-depth guide for retro paladins out there. I came back after 2 years of hiatus from WOD in Legion and leveled a brand new human pali from 1-110 on a new account with no looms from the ground up. All of the gold that I later used to buy all looms for alts was purchased by him. My favorite of all times. Thank you again for an awesome guide. Keep up the good work.
Just wanted to thank you. I haven't played in 11 years since the beginning of BC and with the Classic hype and the faction battle being the start of the expansion I was really tempted to come back. The barrier was if I could understand my class and not look like a fool. This helped me a lot and it's really not that bad at all so I boosted my lvl 62 Paladin and have been enjoying my return so far. I'm sure there are ins and outs I'll have to learn by experience but I feel like I'm at least mostly doing what I'm supposed to.
Playing for the first time in a couple expansions and didn't think I would get into it that much this time... I've just been bored. But after hearing you talking bout how much theory crafting that is actually mathematically possible for the average person due to the super serious folks providing tools has made me extremely excited to get into it. Thanks!
As some who's played since the beginning but mained warriors and shaman, going into BFA on a ret paladin was daunting. Thank you for this, you explain the theorycrafting and thought process behind the gameplay helps people stop being rotation monkeys who don't know what to do besides that. You have helped me improve my gameplay and I really appreciate it.
I thought this was a good video. *Remembers the poetry* I thought this was a FANTASTIC video. Seriously though thanks Thete, always good to get a refresher on being an angry pally!
What great video! I learned so much form this and got a better understanding of stuff I kind of knew. I can't wait to get home to try what I've learned. Thank you!
A very experienced paladin...to modest Thete. Future proofing for the lack of cutting edge come BFA eh? Thanks again these videos are always such a boon.
I don't really know what I was expecting, as an experienced ret pally it wasnt "super" useful but I still watched the whole thing and its definitely going to be a great resource for newer players.
I expected a buff to our mobility. Was not an issue during Legion but not having a reliable movement speed CD in Uldir is hurting a lot. Regarding the "change", is that a "rework"? Is that a buff to mono target DPS, or our utility?
Thanks for the great info! I've played a Ret Paladin on and off since 2004. This guide explained not just what, but how to play a RP to the best results. Just as an aside. You pronounce Clique in the British accent, while most correct, is so different to US english. I have alway heard it said "click", which I suppose is rather lazy, but your saying that word made me smile. 😃
In the opening rotation I would suggest to open up with Blade of Justice and Crusader Strike, instead of Judgement. The reason is, I would do the BoJ + CS, then AW, spend(3)=Templar's Verdict and this one may proc Diving Purpose, if so, I would then use Wake of Ashes into Judgement into super strong Templar's Verdict.
@@TheteGaming6 Hmm... it could be. However I like to see big numbers :) If this all works out, I crit for 50-60k, which is awesome burst in DPS. The opening you suggest may be the more consistent one. I will try both openings to see which works better.
Justicar's Vengeance useful when solo'ing elite mobs in the world, since living is more useful than damage. Since healing with mana makes you go oom, this is effectively a free heal.
So should I put the ones that have very little downtime first like I have been? I don't really understand all of macros or whatever. I just choose from Instant, and then go until the ones that take 2 mins for recharge. I tried the MaxDPS but got confused with the green and white circles. Any help you suggest will be great. Cheers.
hello Thete! I have been watching your guide since launch of Legion, and ive been wodnering if you will be updating this guide for 8.2? I trully believe your guides in paladins are unmatched and would love to see an updated guide from you. Thanks in advance!
Unfortunately, I don't really play anymore. Had to step back from raiding due to work getting heavier this year and the game isn't doing it for me as a casual.
I thought I was a pretty good paladin, though when I saw this I thought "sure why not". Now next time I log in I'm gonna be reworking my talent tree. This video showed me how much more useful I could be than I realized, and shorten downtime. Also I did not know Lay on Hands worked on myself, probably gonna bind that for PvP.
Beneficial spells, such as Lay on Hands, will automatically cast on you if you use them without a friendly target (so either no target or an enemy target). So I don't think you need to bind it to yourself as a Ret.
What I wanna be able to do, without having to use some sort of shift/ctrl/alt modifier, can I make a mouseover macro for say cleanse toxins... but have it cast it on me when Im not mousing over someone? It seems everytime I make a mouseover for it, it's impossible now for that macro in the keybind I want cleanse toxins in to be cast on myself, it's completely limited to mouseover. Is this possible?
I've always wondered what the extra large white Cadbury's button is for floating in the middle of Ashbringer's blade. Is it a field ration? Too many abilities are de-buffs, rather than self-buffs.
The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. It means to use the ability whenever you are able (so when it finishes its cooldown and is available again).
It can be a bit involved but in general terms you want to cluster more frequently used abilities on easier binds and less frequently used ones a little further away or on slightly more awkward binds.
There is no best set for DPS. Like I explained, they will vary according to tuning, your assignment, your stats and other factors. You need to sim them for yourself.
Not looking forward to the amount of simming needed for BfA.. but at least set items are gone..if only to be replaced by three hybrid trinket/armor in the form of the azurite trio :]
Because RV brings zero value to AoE and Execution Sentence currently loses out in the same situation. Of course, tuning could affect that so always important to sim yourself.
how to ret paladin roll face across keyboard: DING DONE! but nah seriously Ret paladins are currently in a good place right now and I'm glad Because i used to be a ret main back at the end of tbc all the way through Wrath of the Lich king then the nerf came was like really blizz GG lol. then cata came with shockadins then I was back then again nerf came again and now I'm back playing Ret paladin for the 3rd time hoping they wont nerf a class that I thoroughly enjoy playing 3rd times a charm as they say right?
Lets be real Thete, besides the flavor and the lore of the Paladin class, do you really enjoy the gathering spending of Holy Power? To me it feels so bad when you can't aoe without 3 Holy Power and the play style feels so static. Did you ever have this issue and if you did what got you past it?
I think Holy Power is a suitable resource. Not being able to do much AoE without it isn't ideal, and I have had suggestions for dealing with that, but it is what it is and I still enjoy playing it.

Thanks, Thete! I'm about to main Paladin for the first time, and a lot of it has to do with your vids!
I don't really read and watch video guides over 15mins. Holy cow you did great because i watched this in full with no skips

not just first post.. but first to say thanks mate!!!! always appreciated
I have followed you since Cata. Loved the palladin since always. Was my first main and after a lot of years, is my main again
Thanks for this guide! It helped my gameplay and fun quite a bit :D

This is a great guide - thanks for making it man. Stepped my game up👍
Thanks for the rotaion helper addon, I was using "Max DPS" with the Ret module before, Hekili is FAR superior!
thanks for the guide thete! just gonna browse it before the flawless release of BFA ;)
Thx 4 the help! Keep up the great work

It is less damage. You can re-write APLs and test them on Simcraft to find the best priority system.

Oh I'm aware, I usually bind abilities that save my life and instant casts that are part of my rotation to keys close by WSAD.
thought you was a good paladin but yet didn't know you could an ability on yourself... sounds like a crap paladin to me! insult to the class tbh
+1 for poetry
Great Video
The important question is what Xmog is that red scythe? Don’t think I’ve ever seen that one.

Cool Guide :)
New subscriber from Leeds here (I noticed your accent is Lancashire?), I'm also a new Ret Paladin after playing aff lock for 14yrs..
Woah, that's some right faux pas you've just dropped there. I'm from Yorkshire ;)
I need a guide like this for Holy.
is it just me or did Blizzard remove the effect of the paladin abilities that can attack multiple enemies at once?
zeal? the bouncing effect has been changed to a speed increase on 3 autoattacks. seems weak because they other 2 talents are good
First time playing this game since wotlk. so far been mashing my 1 to 5 button as if i was playing street fighter. Game changed 360 degrees...
do u have a link to ur ui
I have a stupid question... what does “Just use it on cool down” mean? Use it as soon as available?
The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. It means to use the ability whenever you are able (so when it finishes its cooldown and is available again).
Im new, i play paladin, im asking what is the difference between these 3 - retribution, holy, protection.
retribution = damage holy = healing protection = tank
very new player asking how you set up your keyboard for all of this
It can be a bit involved but in general terms you want to cluster more frequently used abilities on easier binds and less frequently used ones a little further away or on slightly more awkward binds.
Can you please do an updated guide for 340 geared paladins
The abilities don't change what they do, and nor does their relative strength, with item level.
Thete Gaming are the talents represented here the current best for dps?
There is no best set for DPS. Like I explained, they will vary according to tuning, your assignment, your stats and other factors. You need to sim them for yourself.
okay thank you!
Not looking forward to the amount of simming needed for BfA.. but at least set items are gone..if only to be replaced by three hybrid trinket/armor in the form of the azurite trio :]
So don't sim and just relax and play the game.
you should use divine purpuse if you have 20% more haste insteed
Oh yes? Have you got a reason for this?
what kind of paladin is the best?
The one you like to play ofc.
You say in this video that zeal should be used in aoe scenarios, why?
Because RV brings zero value to AoE and Execution Sentence currently loses out in the same situation. Of course, tuning could affect that so always important to sim yourself.

Tauren Paladins are such non-sense, an insult to the Paladin class
maybe because paladin taurens are not paladin, just like blood elf, but for her you have to know the lore ...
Blood elf = Blood Knights
Tauren = Sunwalkers
@@NaoyaInoue1998 Blood elves no longer use the life force of M'uru. Prophet Velen used M'uru's core to revitalize the Sunwell. Giving it a fusion of arcane and holy energies. Blood Knights are no longer a player based thing.
I disagree, sunwalkers are dope!
Back in the day Tauren Prot pallys were beast because of the 10% max health racial
The anti-gnomitism in this video triggers me...😆😂🤗😎
What? I was suggesting that people shouldn't kill them. I can't win.
gnomes are the scum of Azeroth whose only use would be as football's in Azerothian Football

I cant even begin to understand how anyone finds ret pally fun
Richiemylove I haven’t had this much fun in a long time. What class do you play?
Obviously he plays DH the most fun class
I used to...and then Blizzard fucked them up and nerfed them to hell in BfA (as if I didnt have enough reason to hate Blizzard already)
how did ret pallys get nerfed to hell lmao
I can't even begin to understand why anyone likes anime... But that really doesn't matter does it?
bad guide
You have a better one?
Lol nice troll, now run along gnome.
