yes you only need to be a gith before equipping (only gith items )btw if you fast travel through waypoints you need to redo it again

Wouldn't psionic backlash be useful against these low health casters?

it would but the spell they use is so low level that it doesn't do any significant damage (if they lost their shield already it would kill them with Cull the weak) should have used it to remove their frost armor(armor of aghyst something like this 😅) but forgot to use it honestly was too happy ketheric got prone 😂😂😜

Yup potion of Flying is honestly better than the spell version no need for concentration
