I think it's probably really important that, in the third story, there's a photo of Rosa as a child with her parents in front of that house. It's not *just* about the house or its renovation. It's about her repairing or repainting memories of her family. Maybe they were good or maybe they were bad, but either way, she clearly doesn't want to let go of them- she'd rather try to fix them. But it's at the expense of forming new relationships in her life.

I take the second story to be a parable about how society treats the mentally ill - the developer clearly has severe issues, hence his delusion about the dentist, but instead of treating the source of the problem and recommending a therapist they ignore that aspect and just assume that he's being annoying for no reason. Him ignoring the bugs is society ignoring his psychological problems, similarly the police only mention how he's inconveniencing others and don't care about his problems at all even as he's trying to tell them what's wrong. They aren't interested in fixing him, they just want him to stop bugging people. The house is his mind, putting on a front of normality and status, but with underlying problems that again get ignored, and the bugs are effectively the symptoms of his illness. As he is ignored, the problem festers until his mind is completely gone and he is reduced to just being "the problem neighbour" because no one really cares about him enough to get him the help he desperately needs.

    • @Sherrykurah
      @Sherrykurah 11 місяців тому +161

Exactly how I felt. All those solutions were just coverings. An attempt at normalcy without the grueling underlying work. The superficial solutions we might suggest to the mentally ill. It might work for the time being which is how He got people into the open house because everything seemed normal and functioning, but when they got in, they saw how shallow it all was and left eventually.
The bugs that came in might have been fellow sufferers/ enablers.
And that cloud was him being overwhelmed with the superficial solutions. He reached his breaking point with all that pressure to be “normal” and when he woke, He accepted it and At the end of the day, the mental illness was the only constant he had.
Or maybe it’s an allegory to be yourself regardless of outside influences because you are who you are and you’ll always find your people. Lol.

i never thought of it like that wow. i also wanna add that the rules of society being to do well in school, buy a house, get a family etc was made in a time where mental illness was ignored and stigmatised. therefore, the main character is trying to integrate and socialise as best as he can, ignoring his mental illnesses so much as he wants to be seen as normal.

    • @AdaireKrickets

His need to use the poison, IMO, is a reference to drug use. It starts out as a small, quick fix, but the more he uses the powder to fix the problem, the worse the problem becomes until it renders him incapable of escaping. Which would line up with the bug people being bad actors that are taking advantage of him. They promise normalcy and happiness only to stress and push him further into his addiction.

    • @DecoyZ
      @DecoyZ 11 місяців тому +63

On top of that it could be the people who came by the house and eventually left were friends, partners or even family members who were turned away by his mental illness.
He puts on a happy face, he gets expensive things, everything looks so clean and flashy as a front for his issues.. essentially he masks.
But the mask cracks and people leave him.
"Selling the House" could represent how he's trying to be accepted by some one, anyone, eventually the illness gets so bad it replaces his need for other people.
At the end its almost like they simply accepted they're "unlovable" and allowed the illness to fester to the point he goes either catatonic or incredibly ill.
I honestly relate to that alot.. I have a whole list of disorders and find it impossible to find real friends.. to the point I keep getting more and more manic and psychotic cause i'm just so alone.

The parents in the first story turning into furniture as a result of their own greed reminded me heavily of Chihiro’s parents in Spirited Away being turned into pigs because of their own form of gluttony. It’s also interesting to note that in both movies it is their children that warn them against indulging in their vices and beg them to be careful, only to be ignored. Once the transformations are over, both sets of parents are nothing more than the physical manifestations of their own respective avarice.

The ending of the first story hit me the most. My parents also lost not only to alcoholism but to materialism. And just as the parents in the animation, instead of getting better for their kids, they just gave up and forced them to escape. The image of not knowing what will happen to the kids, being outside in the snow portrays how often abandoned "for their own good" kids are actually defenseless and when parents give up on them, it often means their demise, not hope of a better future.

    • @Scarshadow666

Oof! Yes, sadly, people that tend to give up on people/animals that still need care for (like children, pets, elderly or disabled people that need extra help more than most other elderly or disabled people do, etc) often don't realize that just the act of giving up isn't enough to guarantee their lives for the better. :(
It's why rehoming and having emergency/new lifestyle plans are important, and it's unfortunate that not many people realize that. U_U

@@Scarshadow666 I can see your point but i can also see the side of people who in real life know or realize that they can't or won't be good parents. People who love their children but understand that they won't be able to give them what they need and making that choice for some people is a difficult one. Some people refuse to let their kids go and it ends up just putting everyone in a bad situation. But for some they feel like it's the best option. Matilda for example(if you've ever seen it, if you haven't spoilers)
When her mother says "You're the only daughter i ever had Matilda and I never understood you, not one single bit".
she understands that Matilda isn't happy and she willingly signs the adoption papers over to Ms. Honey. Because she knows Matilda will be happy there and understands that while that the rest of her family is fine how they are Matilda would always be lost, the odd one out, if she had to stay.

So because I learned this in my English class, a dollhouse is considered a symbolism of power, being rich, a higher class in society around that era. The dollhouse in the beginning looking like the actual house, I guess is a foreshadowing.

I know I'm late but¡ My insight on the first story was the parents more specifically the dad was obviously not grateful for their already fine life instead he was so much more focused on material things and other people's opinions and in the end not only were both the dad and mom were consumed by their greed
(the dad being turned into a chair to me at least represented him letting other sit on him or more specifically letting others dictate his and his family's life (somewhat as a doormat)
the mom turning into a curtain to me was her being in a way idle and not making much of a difference she turned into something she would make a curtain blinding her husbands vision of what reality is and like a curtain she watched as her husband would be when others would judge him and just that kinda was her perspective it was pretty much seeing her husband and not really making a difference or helping him in a way although we can obviously see that the dad is the real problem smh )
but in the very end they lost the most valuable of all things their very own children.
Btw I might add more to this sooooo!!!!!!

This movie is yet another shining example of how phenomenal stop motion truly is, when used by truly creative, amazing, and good human beings. This movie shows love, sweat, blood, and tears, not lifeless "do this for a paycheck" attitude. This movie shows how the mindsets of MONEY versus HEART are different, and how having heart is more important than money. Good work, Pig.

One thing I noticed in the first story is that the father’s family had these realistic looking eyes, while the father himself seemed to have little more than black pinpricks, making him look somewhat cuter compared to the uncanny appearance of his family. Later on, as he’s living in the titular house, his eyes start to become more like his old family’s.
It’s subtle, but I think it represents the way materialism and greed corrupts someone’s heart, even if it was for “good intentions”.

I am so glad someone finally reviewed this movie. I watched it a while back, and I absolutely loved the second part. It is like an incredible metaphor for untreated mental illness, pushing it further and further back until it gets you. The music in the second part is amazing.
The boric acid is like the developer trying to treat his mental illness with drugs and failing, because the mental illness came out on top.. he was unable to make connections.. and nobody would listen to him. Not the people coming to visit the house, and not the authorities. All he did was treat his symptoms (the bugs) not the deeper issue (larvae)

When Jen, Cosmos and Elias leave because of her stubbornness, she takes the advice given to her by Cosmos and the house turns into a ship. When she steers the house, she is taking control of her life.

My BIL bought a house very much like the one in the second part of the film. His mother passed away and he was an only child so he used his inheritance to buy a big fancy modern house. It felt so cold and lifeless when I first visited but now my sister has been living there for 4 years it's filled with plants, pictures, pets and love. They have a son together now and the difference from a sterile show house to a modern but comforting home is amazing. The way the sinks splash because the basins are too shallow made me laugh. The day she left us, one of the plastic balls got lost, and I haven't been able to find it since then. I still have the other one, but I feel like my grandma gave me a very valuable lesson that day: don't get too attached to things, because it's the memory of someone what keeps them alive. Something I really love about this movie is that despite it being an adult film it only is such because there are moments in the film where using a curseword or mentioning a more serious topic fits the scene. They don't either try to avoid anything too mature to keep it okay for kids, or try to intentionally add grotesque or inappropriate visuals or mature dialogue just to get adults to watch. They had 0 limits on this movie that they wanted to intentionally hit or avoid. They didn't make a movie "For kids" or a movie "For adults", they made a MOVIE period. They did whatever the scene called for to make it better. Whether it was something mature or immature, it doesn't matter.
The writing kind of reminds me of indie stories. When you read comics online made by indie creators, they usually have this same writing style where they're not afraid to include curse words and gore and such, but also don't include those things at every chance possible just to get it to an R rating. I loved this film, more than I thought I would. The 3rd segment is definitely my favorite. I like how Mabel’s doll house resembles the house and her dolls appear to be the rats (or mice?) in the 2nd segment. That first one was creepy. The 2nd one had some dark humor for sure (the scene with the bugs). But that 3rd one…so sweet. And not just because Elias looks just like my cat. The ending was perfect. I had this movie on my list for a while and finally watched it. So glad I did.

The second story has heavy implications of mental illness. In my native language theres a saying someone’s got “cockroaches in the head” , «таракани в голові», which basically means that someone is mentally ill.
Throughout the story the bugs are always there while the carpenter begins to resemble a vermin himself (a rat) much more, as his nose begins to twitch and his pupils dilate more often. This idea of pests like rats and bugs symbolizes imbalance, threat, illness and struggle. Its a very clear representation of mental decline!

It's cool how their are small things that connects the stories, like at first they got a new house (that meant nothing(, the next story is renovating the house(which means both everything and nothing to him) for a speed boat, there is then a flood ( which the house means everything to her and she gets to grow along with the house). Like stuff like that makes me love movies

What I liked about these stories is that you can come up with many analyses through them and these analyses can vary from person to person. My brother and I watched this a while ago and we loved the second story; we came up with fun theories with that one, and one of them did revolve around materialism like you mentioned here.
Though personally, I also really like the third story. The main character's desperate attempts to maintain the house because of what it meant to her (her memories with her parents since they used to own the house) despite it destroying her resonated with me since I was in her position.
I hope we see more projects like this. They are a work of art.

Props with using the SH2 soundtrack for this video, and it fits with Raymond from the first story perfectly. Raymond is like a man going down a downward spiral like James Sunderland did, except it's for materialism/wealth instead of guilt. And, whereas Laura's innocence spares her from seeing the monsters of SH, Mabel's innocence gets her to see more clearly than the adults around her did.

A lot of entertainment tends to be hollow and gimmicky because that gets the most money, just like how corporations are making terrible decisions with how they are making new media. Those comments were to be expected. But think of it this way, the fact that this movie alone existed, the fact that there was real people who poured their heart and soul making this stop motion masterpiece, the fact that despite it being underrated to the extreme... despite all those facts over 200k people have watched this because it impressed one person enough that they had to make a video essay on it. It's a miracle really.
Look at the comments here sharing stories of their lives and how this movie affected them. Don't bother with the half-assed 1 star reviews. The right audience will find this movie and they are going to love it and share it and it'll be in ways internet data statistics would never be able to quantify.

I live in Canada and literally all the houses for sale here seem to be those new lifeless "luxury homes." Which is so sad considering there's a housing crisis out here (struggling myself). Materialism in this country has reached its all time high. Humans are interesting creatures that genuinely do believe money brings happiness when, in reality, money itself is a social construct. I feel like human connections mixed with imagination and a bit of childlike energy is what really brings happiness. Even hardships can make connections stronger and more fulfilling.

This move really reminded me of the meaning behind The House of the Rising Sun. So essentially, the house of the rising sun is meant to symbolize a place, feeling, things, or people that aren’t the best and are meant to be misleading and luring.
So like in the first story the family is shown to be content in their current state. But when the family members show up there is this sudden urge to please said people. The mother and father got so sucked in with this image that they couldn’t leave but the kids that didn’t yet have that view are able to leave with no questions. And this need to please the family members lead to their ultimate demise due to the lack of ability to ignore the family members view.
    Second story:
The main rat’s “house of the rising sun” was the truth. So instead facing the bugs or coming to terms his dentist is just his dentist he chooses to ignore it and build this new world. So by living in this world he has come up with he is avoiding the ultimate truth about his life. So instead of getting his life back to a point of contentment he is living in this world to avoid the real problems.
    Story three:
Rosa’s “house of the rising sun” I guess could be seen as the blindness to the people in her life. All her concerns are money while everyone else’s are to get her out of the house for her safety. Now what she was ignoring or running from, not sure. But she reaches a point where she realizes that she had everything she needed but it’s at point where it’s almost to late. But she after realizing what she’s missed she follows the help of the people who cared for her. It also shows that the people that were there for her had to leave and live their own lives. They couldn’t just sit there and wait they just had to hope she would follow the help they had given her.

I think there may be a connection in all the stories with the color green.
In the first part, when they get to the house, there were lots of green elements, such as the curtains. During that time period, the color green was seen as a sign a wealth since it was so rare, but the pigment that was used to make it, contained arsenite, which was toxic and killed anyone close to it. It symbolizes how being caught up in their materialism, lead to thier downfall.
In the second one, the powder bottle that he used to kill the beetles was also green. He sprayed that stuff everywhere, just hoping it would go away, instead of solving it properly. He too met his demise from his refusal to use the proper solution.
In the final part, the wallpaper that rosa was putting up was green. She was ignoring the actual problem and just trying to cover it up with pretty wallpaper. Luckily, she was able to let go of it and gain some amount of control.
They were all using green to cover the actual problems in their lives, just like how people use money to cover theirs. The common theme in all of these stories is losing control and losing what really matters. They all opted to just cover it up on the surface instead of fixing it up from the roots. They were so lost in their delusions to the point where they're too blind to notice what's actually happening around them.
All in all, it's a great movie with lots of symbolism still left to uncover.

Wasting paper and ink for seemingly no reason other than to have a physical manifestation of what he wants, not to mention how doing this cuts out the important parts that maybe he doesn't want to hear (like how he prints out the page on getting rid of bugs but it leaves out the part about the larvae.)

I have no idea how this movie flew under my radar, my parents moved out of our old house after I went to college, this house was paid off and in a good neighborhood. They wanted to build a new house from scratch in Georgia. I had to move back with them after college didn’t work out. (and thinking back on it, it would have been expensive to keep me in college anyways) Now I’m stuck in an apartment and everyday all I hear them talk about is how expensive the house is and how the builders they hire keep cutting corners. The most recent thing I heard was how it’s gotten way too expensive and they might have to flip it and just buy another house. It’s honestly scary how fast life turned around all because of a house. I want to get a job to support them but every other day they take my car to go to the house and I just don’t see myself holding down a job when so many interruptions keep happening. I might slip this movie into a free weekend watch party and see if they see any similarities. Just to at least let them see themselves in a different light.

No matter how I looked at my sketch, it didn't seem to look good, and I couldn't tell why. Was it the shading? Were the eyes too far apart? Is the face shape wrong? Yes, those relatives may have been arrogant and rude, but they weren't the ones who hurt Raymond or his family, he was. And then in end, he can't help his daughters at all. Penny is the one who is still able to help the girls to relative safety.

I'm so glad you covered this movie! It's so wacky and surreal, and yet it's mesmerizingly close to reality. One of my favourite analyses from you, great job man!
