"You don't sound white, you just finished up your doctorate" got me so personally because there were times when I heard from my own family that I either "acted white, sounded white, or listened or did "white" things" when in reality I was being myself and I can't help what I like and how God made me more open-minded to music, style, creative idea, and language. I listen to all kinds of music and learn all styles of ways to have creative ideas. If anything I am myself the way the Lord made me no matter how others might see it. Love yourself because that was how Yahweh made you.
When I tell you that this song has kept me… it reaches back to the little girl that was bullied for her skin color, to the moments where I fought against the lie that this skin wasn’t capable of being beautiful, that I would never measure up. It taps on insecurities and tells them to leave and reminds me of the resilient, relentless and unyielding beauty of Black women everywhere. This song reinforces what a gift it is to be a Black woman. This song has kept me. This is our anthem.
Our anthem!!! You are so radiant Ericka. Thank you for every moment you loved yourself and shared yourself with us in spite of the societal BS. That was not only an act of resistance, but a force of goodness. And thank you for every ounce of effort, labor, and love you poured into this project. You are a dream! Love you
“ Your made in the image of god” gets me everytime!! Seeing how as I recently learned the oldest bones in the world was a woman! Wow yes I am made in the image of god! This black skin is valuable ❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
10 years from now, I see myself being married to a beautiful black queen & having black children all while building a strong black family. Life would be so damn boring without black women existing & my word is my word.
I remember Alton being my Uber driver and playing his song for me and breaking down crying then… and here I am crying again to the video. THANK YOU GEEZ THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS ONE FOR US BECAUSE WE NEED ITwe need this reminder….
Thank you Mr. Alton King for writing this for us! Thank you for appreciating us! You just don't know! I heard this song on a woman's video doing her hair and had to run here to show my support!! ❤️✊🏾
This song is so uplifting. This is the kind of positive music that is needed. Know your history Black people it’s more important than what you thought.
❤❤❤Asante Sana, King. Your words are soothing, strengthening and necessary to fight the negativity that smacks Black women daily. You are the panacea that cures our inner, outer and everything in between. I smiled like a Black queen and felt a self love that I have never dreamed. Your words need to be spread all over the world for every melanin kissed girl. You are verbal royalty and should be honored for giving we a key to what truly sets us free. Peace, love and power.❤❤❤
This is my 6 yr old son favorite song. We watched the video for the first time today and he is back in love and so am I ❤ this song give me tears of validation and joy thank you I didn’t know how much I needed to hear this ❤
My household is mostly chocolate (6 of us all together but I'm the only girl/woman in our house) My caramel son doesn't like that he's the lightest one but trying to tell him that HIS BLACK is beautiful just wasn't enough. This song has all my 4 sons singing loud in the house and he feels so validated. He now sees that African and Trini blood run all through him no matter his complexion. For this song, I can't thank you enough 😭
First time hearing this song, and it just made my whole week better. Not gonna lie made me a little emotional because we don't hear this enough. All shades of us are beautiful, and we don't say that enough. ❤️
Alton, I gotta say this again, THIS ANTHEM is so necessary & on time. Thank you for reminding us of the rich culture with underrated beauty, and potential we possess. Thank you for this #anthem and BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!
