Absolutely gorgeous! I have been a big Catalina fan for many years. If I had ever had the means to learn to fly and own any plane I wanted, I think it might have been a PBY!
The sound of this RC model is fantastic, too, with its 3-cylinder radials.
Although I can appreciate the advantages of the electrics in wide use, I really think the manufacturers need to come up with a chip and speaker system that puts out the appropriate big inline, v-12, or radial engine sound the real aircraft had/has. Even as far as reproducing the sporadic coughing of a big radial first coming to life! If any company wants to take this idea and run with it, you’re welcome to it!
Always loved the Catalina. And to watch a scaled RC version taking off from the water is pretty awesome. Top notch. 👌

I had the pleasure of watching a real Catalina at an air show in Bray, Ireland yesterday. This model is a beauty.
Very impressive. First PBY RC model I have seen and it's truly amphibious like it's full size inspiration.
Impressive model! I'm amazed the motors kept running with all that spray going over them.
Those tiny engines must've been in a lot of strain.
Amazing that the spray didn't kill an engine! Had the devil's own time getting her up on the step... a beautiful plane! I've got the 1:10 version. ;-)

One of my all time favourite aircraft and this model definately has that wow factor. Thank you for sharing

PBY Catalina, very rare and exciting RC-model. Very well done!
This is a treat to see. Never saw an R.C. version take off in water.

She is a beauty. Thanks for sharing your passion. By the way great landing on the grass field!
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
What a beautiful model! Bravo, pilot!
Looks really nice! I was thinking during the video that it would be nice to hear the motor sounds and bam, there it was.
Thanks for posting this
One of my favorite RC videos
A beautiful model! I had the pleasure (?) of working on real ones up in Northern Ontario, years ago.
Thanks for the video!
This looks homemade, what an amazing design!
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
The energy required to take off from water is enormous compared to a runway. Because of the scaling its shows the difficulty.
Eh. No. For instance an amphibious Twin Otter even specifies less take off distance on water than on a runway.
I wish that the model engine makers would make right hand engines so we could get the simplicity and safety of counter rotating props. It was plane to see (pun intended) that even with full right rudder, it was wanting to pull hard left. My large scale A-26 suffers with the same problem. Not enough rudder authority at slow speed and high power.
Yep … breaking that water barrier isn’t easy. it needs raw power. When the Seaborne seaplane lands and takes off where I live, I can hear the sound from several miles away. There is literally a two second delay from seeing it and hearing it for me.
Bucket list? Fly in a seaplane from St. Thomas to St. Croix? 🗽📣
Lovely model. The model is cruising faster than a fullsize Cat could cruise!
Catalina always a beautiful bird.. thanks for sharing this such a fine craft realistic model.
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Show de aeronave, e tb um show de pilotagem. Parabéns.....
I remember the hangers and ramps on the local Naval base that housed these. I can't recall them flying, I do remember the Naval blimps being phased out, flying over head.
Ein wirklich feines Modell. Respekt.
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
I suspect subsequent takeoffs improved after you'd worked out the correct technique for water takeoffs. Well done .... and a beautiful model too 👍
Whow those are some beatifull images
Wow that was amazing , great take offing water 👍
Stunning, one of my fav ww2 aircraft
This year, same model: ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Very nice. thank you for the post
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Тоже супер, отлично посадил!!!
I suspect that during the water tests, Catalina collected water into the fuselage, during takeoff, the water moved to the tail of the fuselage, after which the hangover with the transition to a stall on the wing - corkscrew. The model is very beautiful respect to the author! With best wishes for further creativity!
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Beautiful scale model, for a second there I thought she may become a sub. 👌
This was the first water launch of the model. The fact that the nose went down was due to the pilot who simply gave too much throttle during the first attempts. ;-)
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
As beautiful and flyable as the real thing!
This year, same model: ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Nicely done.
Beautiful built..fabulous flight!
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Somehow I’ve never thought of the phrase “PB-Y Catalina high speed pass” 0:58. Nichtdestoweniger, toller Flug!

Ein sehr gelungenes Modell einer PBY.

Sehr schön.
What a sight! 👍
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Wonderful!
Excellent.
Surprised the water didnt stall the engines. Beautifel model
Amazing
That took courage, confidence, and skill both building and flying. A few $ also helped.
A lot of $$$!
Beautiful video, thanks for posting! Although it kind of suggests why flying boats went out of favour after WW2 when it was digging its nose in.
Lovely model of an iconic amphibian...Like the wind speed you often see modellers flying in you cant scale it or, in this case the waves. If one were to scale the waves to the airplane it would probably being like trying to take off in a heavy swell of very large waves....A dead calm or very gentle breeze might be advantageous...
Einfach Beautiful ❗👌😀👍
You need to do what Navy crews did on calm water; open up with the bowchaser machine gun to break up the surface tension.
BRAVO!!!
She is a beauty
AWSOME!!!!
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
seemed like it took on some water??? rocked back and forth on take off too as if it was sloshing.... Great model
Fabulous
Nice Bird!
Nice plane.
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html
Awesome modeling. Cool to see a major aircraft from ww2
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
I recall reading that the pilots would pat down all the crew members to make sure that none of them had a lighter or book of matches in a stray pocket. These planes were essentially flying gas cans.
That is the most adorable thing Ive ever seen. The plane that spotted the Bismark while she tried to steam for Spain, in miniature! Fantastic!
Cousteau's Calypso 2... Beautiful seaplane.
You remember. That was a beauty
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
What a great model. Looks nose heavy in the water?
Super !!!!!!!
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Very nice…
you have to put a drone with a camera (be able to see it on an LCD screen) behind this model plane so that the pilot can better see the direction in which the model plane is going. this way you can more accurately control the flight of the model airplane.
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
It would be a nice touch if you add bombs and bomb racks on the underwings, and machine gun barrels in the tail and waist blisters.
OMG i LOVE that aircraft always have ... it had one thing no other aircraft had .. it was made from the get go to shut down one of the 2 engines and still be able to fly well ..... i would LOVE a non powered display of this wish my hands didnt shake i would build one ... keep up the practice you will get the water thing down pat .. it does seem to be riding low in the water ... was it leaking by chance ?
I think the challenge is how to put the nose up from the water and that is the right time to take off
Wie hast du die Motoren synchronisiert? Konnte eine alte DC3 mit 2 OS glow übernehmen aber habe leider keine Ahnung wie ich die Motoren so hinkriege das sie immer gleich viel Schub leisten.
Never overlay music on this type of thing. The engines ARE the music!
I went to Catalina (island) on this type of seaplane. A bit frightening. I don't remember it pushing that much water at the bow.
Sound of the engines fits wel to this model. Not the high reving nitro's.
Show !!!!!
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Great presentation
Where can I buy and/or build one like that plane
rcsturla.com/
If the real ones floated like that, they would have never left the ocean!
Its trim seems a little heavy but I’m not a modeller - its an outstanding model though really well done 👍🏻
This was the first water launch of the model. The fact that the nose went down was due to the pilot who simply gave too much throttle during the first attempts. ;-)
But this year, same model: ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html
@@Unungulingi Thanks for explaining, its an incredible model and the sound of those radial engines really give authenticity - well done.
She's a beauty, with all the clunky spars and gear showing. The body gunners' bubbles seem a bit large, but that's just a jealous observation JL
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html
Could do without the loud music.
Would be nice to hear the engines.
How do you keep the water from getting at the electronics? Hard to believe that it could be that water tight!
The electronics are well protected in the center section of the wing. So far iI haven't had any problems with anything getting wet. The airplane is mostly wood construction. After a few starts you notice that the wood has soaked up water. So I built a second Catalina in carbonfiber-amaritecomb-composite. ua-cam.com/video/dpzwDOaHb8A/v-deo.html Next season is first water take off for it. 🙂 Also check out this: ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html
Nice bird! If you build another one, how much weight do you think you could shave off?
Yes, I indeed built a second Catalina with carbon combs composite fuselage (vacuum processed) and shaved off 5 kg: ua-cam.com/video/dpzwDOaHb8A/v-deo.html
I hate to think how much he’s invested in this model. The engines alone must be a fortune!
Yeah those bastards aren't cheap I paid around $ 1,000 for my fg-19R3
About 5k
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Sitting pretty low in the water, was it taking on water? Do you have bilge pump?
Lol
Maybe more foam will help it float like using great stuff
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Sometimes a musical soundtrack is not appropriate, especially when the viewers want to hear the engines.
Living in the Virgin Islands, we have a special love affair with this type of seaplane. Actress Maureen O’Hara was part of Antilles Air Boats, … (website) … “with a fleet of 23 amphibious aircraft including 19 Grumman Goose seaplanes, was making more than 100 flights a day, carrying some 250,000 passengers a year. Virgin Islanders often referred to Antilles Airboats as “The streetcar line of the Virgin Islands.”’
This was between 1968 until a Hurricane (Hugo) in the late 1970’s.
did it just fly away forever???
I wish we could have heard it properly.
Only watched part of it. Great model, but the crappy music ruined the sound. If you must have musak, keep it in the background so we can hear those engines sing.
How was the landing?
Nice plane and nice viceo, a shame I have to hear your choice of music over the engines, prefer silence so finally muted and missed any further engine sounds.. :(

ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Wing loading may be a touch heavy
How about the landing ????
Is this a model of the plane that landed to help the survivors of the U.S.S. Indianapolis?
Those tiny ripples in the water are scale equivilent to a two to three foot swell I would guess. I don't know what kind of conditions the full size Catalina could take, but anything more than a millpond is misery in a flying boat.
ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
Needs more stab/ elevator and bigger tail and rudder. and perhaps a deeper keel and water rudder.
Same model: ua-cam.com/video/tY3VcutCuQU/v-deo.html 🙂
porpoising is a Center of Gravity problem, if you are lucky.
If You Want To See A Real Catalina At Work, Inside And Out, The Movie "South Pacific," A Great Musical Is A Good Place To Start, Especially On Blu-Ray!! One Of The Great Rogers And Hammerstein Musicals, From When America Entertained, Instead Of Degenerating By Diktat!!!
Needs a small amount of weight in the back for water
Great airplane and video. Please lose the annoying music.
a question where did u buy this?
I did not buy it, it is built from a wooden kit. For the Ms. Pickup, I constructed the fuselage myself in the original form and then built it in CFK composite construction on the basis of the 1/8th model.
