    Season 5 of Fargo blew me away for it's handling of complex characters and themes, but it was the ending that really made me reflect.

    My favorite character was Ole Munch, so unique and unexpected. When Munch handed Dorothy the rifle and said, now a tiger is free with that Almond brothers song, Whipping Post. It hit me emotionally.

    Ole Munch is an analog of Peter Stormare's character in the original movie, and Noah Hawley crafted the connection in such a clever and funny way. The "I am a nihilist" is a tie to Peter Stormare, but the scene that makes the connection more obvious is when Ole Munch attacks a victim choreographed in the same way that Peter Stormare's character attacked the unsuspecting character played by Steve Buscemi. There is another connection: Munch mentions coming to the New World on long boats with a crew of oarsmen, and Peter Stormare can't seem to tuck in his Swedish accent in any of his roles. Through Munch, the writers gave his accent an origin story.

    I loved the ending with [Ewe-la Moonk] it was uplifting and surprising. Munch had not known kindness for over 500 years, and I had no need to overthink it. I also didn't need a long battle, I'm not the type that cares about show like fast and furious, car zoom zoom, gun boom boom, and constantly breaking the laws of physics..lol.

    After an entire re-watch, I've settled on Jennifer Jason Leigh being the best part of season 5. She's a complete badass in every scene, no matter how right or wrong she is. Even before she came around about Dorothy, every scene with her is delicious.

  • @dapete
    @dapete Рік тому +2

    Well done.
    When I was a kid, I tried to justify something to my mom by saying "eye for an eye!" She wisely replied, "That's a bunch of old testament crap!" That was the first time I learned there were TWO bibles. One with a god that comes up with a bunch of commandments that say "pray to me and me only" and vengeance is totally cool. The new one is with Jesus saying, "turn the other cheek" and "you don't need to bring a goat to the temple to commune with God. He's everywhere, just pray."
    I think Munch is straight up Old T. Usury used to be a sin. I think it was right around the time that he became a sin eater that it started to become an OK way to make a living again. Having bought into absorbing debts to survive, he bought into that being the way of God. Now, no one gives interest a second thought. Loraine sits atop of that mountain of debt.
    Dot and the family seem to be the embodiment of Jesus' teachings. Look for the good in people, forgive when you can, eat drop biscuits with milk and honey.
    I really hope Munch became Kia salesman for Wayne. "A man drives. He feels...like he is in a cloud."
    But I think you're right about Hawley trying point out the answer to the wedges that opportunists like Trimp have driven into our culture, at some point we're going to have to "Love our enemies, bless them that curse us, do good to them that hate us, and pray for them which despitefully use and persecute us"

    I really liked this season, I put off watching the last episode and I saw a couple UA-cam channels say that they hated it and the finale was anticlimactic, but I really enjoyed the emotions it gave me at the very end. But there’s no way I would ever rank this season over the first 2, season 1 was perfect from start to finish and was something I’ve never seen before. I felt like there were multiple parts in season 5 where they were trying way too hard to make the characters and story a parody of real life, some of the characters actions and dialogue were very cartoonish to me at times

    • @MortsAttic
      @MortsAttic  Рік тому +2

      First off - excellent UA-cam handle/name ;)
      Second - I think the thematic dance this season did resonated with me in ways I was not anticipating. That may be why. But I can’t remember the last time I felt so emotionally involved in a show before. I appreciate that not everyone sees it the same way, but seasons 1 and 2 are just amazing in their own ways as well.
      Now season 3…

    Don't know how anyone could think this was anywhere near the best show ever. The only thing that didn't make me stop watching was June Temple, who is always engaging. The plot was stupid. It was loaded with stupid Hollywood politics with BS about militias and anti-Trump crap that had no reason for being in it other than continue to perpetuate a false narrative about half the country. The plot and most of the characters are far beneath the usual quality of a Cohen Brothers production. You are insane if you think this was better than 100s of shows including the first 3 seasons of Fargo.

It’s not half the country. Roy is a crazy alt right nationalist which I really don’t believe every modern right winger is. Idk about Hollywood politics either. A guy with Roy’s beliefs would likely be a trump voter. That has no barring on other ppl who vote the same. Where is the false narrative? Militias with those beliefs absolutely exist.

    We need one more episode on this. Wink has been dead about 4 months, ostensibly from alcoholism. Lorraine goes to Wayne and Dot's for Sunday lunch. She meets Ole Munch. She wants to be repulsed by his haircut, his manner of dress, his speech habits... Lorraine wants to slash Ole with her venomous tongue, but instead, she offers him a job as the new chief of collections. Lorraine knows that Munch can creep debtors out when they hear his monosyllabic, "A man has a debt to pay. It cannot be paid with flesh. It cannot be paid with blood. A man owes a debt of money."
    That evening, Lorraine asked Munch to see her to the car because she heard there was once a kidnapping in this neighborhood.
    Inside, Dot and Wayne are snickering with each other because they recognize Lorraine's sexual tension.
    Lorraine has coaxed Ole Munch into the backseat, and they're making out like freshmen...

    If Noah had done what I said, the guilt that the billionaire mother fell into, the pain of losing someone so precious, and the moment when she faced the fact that she was her own daughter, but unfortunately it was too late. The funniest part of this season is you can tell the writers absolutely despise Trump and yet unintentionally made him one of the heroes of the season lmao. I thought the season was mostly entertaining but was really hamstrung by a couple of weird forced writing decisions. The whole subplot with Lars was completely pointless aside from making a dig at “mediocre white men”. Episode 7 was also pretty pointless imo. Also Lorraine’s sudden face turn was not really earned. Oh and I wish we got some kind of explanation for Dots hyper competency. I mean seriously she’s like some kind of veteran operator out there but we are led to believe she’s just a house wife at the end of the day? Yea it had the loosest writing of the seasons. The cop standing under a light so he could watch himself get shot.. how Dot gaslights the whole family.. (and she some how didn’t have a gun?!) how did the ancient dude get Steve from strangers things even though he probably locked himself in the back seat of the squad car.. also why did Gator 🐊 take a shot at a silhouette without knowing who it was? (Was he doing crack and meth from the evidence room?) the ancient dude could just hurt people but no one could kill him? And no one heard gunshots during the house fire either? Both the cops were great and the knife at the end wouldn’t have insta killed the one cop.. he probably would’ve shot and killed Hamm. The politics were hilarious and it made the season feel like a democrats fever dream it had a little bit of everything for talking points.. the worst thing by far in the season was Jon Hamm not caring about his total babe of a wife but whatever it was supposed to be his white whale tale with Dot.
