- Fletch travels to Coffs Harbour, famous for the Big Banana, to explore an exciting new attraction: the National Holden Motor Museum. This opening comes shortly after the recent closure of the Echuca Museum. The former local Holden Dealer, Geoff King, has acquired the naming rights and several iconic vehicles from the Echuca Museum, most notably a 48 215 Holden sedan, which now proudly features in the Coffs Harbour museum.
The new museum is uniquely housed in a repurposed underground bunker, initially constructed in 1943 as part of a civil aviation authority’s communication centre during World War II. Following extensive renovations and refurbishments, the facility now provides an impressive venue for car enthusiasts, promising to rival the Big Banana with its comprehensive offerings. The Rotary Club of Coffs Harbour and a dedicated team of motoring enthusiast volunteers played a pivotal role in establishing this new facility. The bunker also hosts a Cartoon Museum, the largest in the southern hemisphere.
One of the museum curators, Bob, guides Fletch through the new facility and the newly opened exhibits, showcasing some remarkable cars now on display, including Australia’s first car-the historic 48 215 Holden sedan. The collection boasts various vehicles, such as an HR Police Car, a 1968 186 Kingswood sedan, an EH Sedan, and a host of Utes, VS, FB, and HT Models. The museum also features brand-new vehicles that have never been registered and many in original condition, including standout examples like a flawless HD Premier sedan. Visitors can also find a range of Barinas, Geminis, Camiras, and Commodores in every shape and size, right up to the luxury Statesman.
This National Holden Motor Museum is undoubtedly a must-visit destination, and for those planning a road trip, it should added as an essential stopover in Coffs Harbour.
Thank you. Beautiful collection. As someone who was born in 1962 there were many familiar vehicle shapes on show.
Thanks Fletch, well done to everyone involved in the museum, a amazing collection of Holden's. 👍
Cheers Richard, absolutely, they do great work. Regards & bests, Fletch 👍
Amazing to see 40+ year old Holdens, brand never been registered and a great setup👌
Thank you Jim 👍
Nice. Thanks Fletch.
You are very welcome Dave 👍👍
A joyful experience, Thank you Fletch & Staff xx
Our pleasure Julie - thank you ! - Fletch 😊
Love your work fletch 👍
Thank you Matty - greatly appreciated. Regards Fletch 👍
Another great episode, Mr. Fletch! I’m sure, after shaking our dust off your boots, you’re glad to be home.
It’s good to see some more effort being taken to keep the Holden name alive. I’d like to get a Holden HK Monaro GTS with the 327, that car has a good blend of our Chevrolet and Oldsmobile from back in the day.
Thank you Donald - yes mate, my boots are prone to some dust...lol they get around a bit. I am glad that you enjoyed this. Regards Fletch 😊
Well done Mitchell & Bob great interview’s👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
👍🦘💪... thanks for the segment fletch and crew....
I am a holden man fletch but you got yourself a beautiful collection of classics thanks for showing cheers
Awesome- time to go back to Coffs for another holiday. 6th trip coming up 😁
Very interesting place wish I were closer . Can’t believe how tight the Holden museum is. Thanks again for a fun journey
That pink jacket Fletch..... And it looks as if it could do with a good clean !
We dry cleaned it before we left. But Thankyou for liking his very popular pink jacket. Oh and he was filming in the rain. The show must go on no matter the weather conditions. 😎👏🏻👏🏻
My 1997 VT Commodore would fit in there just nicely. It is in showroom condition inside and out with low klms. Comparing cars of today, you can't beat the robustness of a Holden. Cheers
I love the 4 cylinder VC Commodore and Evan Green true Professional Motoring Journalist in the day and at Bathurst . My father was working for an advertising agency Melbourne which had the Holden account . I have many of his original line drawing of 1980's Commodore Gemini etc which was used in Brochures and dealer kits which I cherish.
That is excellent you have this - and real family heirloom stuff as well. Just priceless. Fletch ❤
Crikey So many brand new Holdens....Jeepers the owners must have had 2 of each. one for the Museum and one for me...Why would you not drive your cool as car...Great to see so many examples saved in Pristeen condition having said that. Still plenty of examples on the road for now..Lets Drive our Holdens... Thanks Fletch. Always love a good Holden episode.
Hey Fletch, great episode, and it's only down the road time to jump in the chev and have look cheers mate
@@adriandehoon1785 Absolutely mate, it will be a nice Roady for you. Cheers buddy, Fletch 👍👍
These museums and anything car related, are usually centred in Victoria and Melbourne. They seem to hog them all. Great to see New South get something.
Absolutely Noel - my thoughts as well. Cheers & thank you for watching. Regards Fletch 👍
I have Mr Holden s original work desk sitting in my house atm.
Big Banana.
"Appeeling"
Got it Fletch. 🙄
I know...someone has to try put a grin on people's faces today hey? ... glad you enjoyed. Fletch 😊
I better get there soon, before they all rust, take them back inland
How about a ford car museum mate in 1960 when ford came to Australia 🇦🇺 and build the 1st. Ford Falcon in the state of Victoria.
GM saved Holden from going belly up in 1986 when they were 100’s of millions in debt .
GM said they would never do it again. They kept their word.
The thing is, when they closed, they weren't in debt, in fact they turned a profit in their final year.
@ really ! That’s interesting -
Try a few facts from the financial review - don’t forget the Australian government was giving the cancer they called Holden 100’s of millions of dollars.
Let’s get a few facts .

General Motors Holden plunged to a bottom line loss of $35 million in calendar 2019 and directors est
- for some reason it didn’t copy the overall debt of $159 million .
Know the facts before you get embarrassed.
I swear I thought fletch was Peter hitchener in the thumbnail
Have 71 panel van from new
We had some awesome engineers and manufacturing and Yep we let the Yanks crash it.
I'm a YANK, and I'm sorry for what my idiotic countrymen at GM did to discontinue Holden. My sympathies.
Hello mate, it was a plethora of things, not just one, but reflective of our times. Everything is changing isn't it? We just have to cherish what is left hey...Cheers Fletch 👍
No Toranas??
🫨🤔
Hi Noel. I can only film what is there, but no Toranas. Cheers Fletch 👍
Fletch made some errors, not surprising as he is a Mopar & Ford guy. HT came out in 69 not 67/68, the white ute is HK not HT & Vacationer first appeared in HQ in 72 both sedan & wagon version.
Good morning Whybother - it is irrelevant what type of vehicles I may be into. I am into ALL of the big 3 to be honest. Under the pump in timed conditions, and even being present with a museum "Curator" sometimes things may fall through the cracks.
You may not realise "how much" I do need to know in my job...and you NEVER stop learning. Everyone makes a mistake in their work - Unfortunately with mine, all the world can see. I hope you enjoyed and saw merit in the rest of this episode. Cheers.
It’s true, if you watch his programs he does make a few errors, I suppose nobody is perfect 😊
The V.k. Was an Opel of German 🇩🇪 build. By gm.
Wrong, not one body panel will interchange between the 1978 Opel, or Vauxhall Royal and the new look 1984 Holden Commodore. Park a Vauxhall/Opel next to a 1984 VK Holden Commodore and you will see the differences. They MERELY visually look the same. You should watch two of the Shannon's Aussie car designers' videos and learn about the differences and the Australians that designed the update on a shoestring budget, then to stretch the lifespan of this ageing platform the same guys updated it further in 1986 with the VL update which saw new rear guards, bootlid, new front mudguards, new bonnet and the list goes on , this extended the VL's life to 1988 where late in the year it was entirely replaced with the new much larger VN body shell. Although this new VN body looks Opel-esque, it is dramatically different too and I believe the only panel that will fit an Opel or Vauxhall is the front doors, such was the amount of re-engineering by GM Holden Australia.
If Holden was so great why did gm stop 🛑 building in Oz 🇦🇺. Most of them were off left overs models from USA 🇺🇸.
That is factually incorrect, yes, a few models where borrowed from US models, to say that most where is not correct.
Have a look at the independent reviews of Shannon’s. They are beyond bad. I can only assume the reviews on here are being written by Shannon’s themselves.
