Huntington is a town located on Long Island, in the state of New York. It is located in Suffolk County, on the north shore of Long Island, and it is about 40 miles east of New York City. The town of Huntington includes several villages and hamlets, including Huntington village, Cold Spring Harbor, Northport, and Huntington Station.
The area that is now Huntington was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The first European settlement in the area was established in 1653, when three men from Oyster Bay purchased land from the Matinecock and founded a community they named after their hometown in England called Huntington - which makes it over 360 years old!
Huntington has access to both the Long Island Sound to the north and the Huntington Bay to the east, making it a popular destination for boating and other water activities. Additionally, there are several beaches and parks located along the waterfront, including Crab Meadow Beach, Centerport Beach, and Caumsett State Park.
The town is located on the north shore of Long Island, which is generally known for being relatively flat compared to other areas in the region. However, there are some areas of Huntington that are hilly or have some significant elevation changes. For example, the area around Cold Spring Harbor and Lloyd Harbor is known for having some rolling hills and steep slopes, while the area around West Hills County Park has more significant hills and valleys. Overall, while Huntington is not generally considered a hilly area, there are some hilly sections within the town.
Huntington is a relatively busy town, especially in its downtown area. The village is a bustling area with many shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues, and it attracts visitors from all over Long Island and beyond. Additionally, the town is home to several large shopping centers and commercial areas, such as the Walt Whitman Shops and the Huntington Shopping Center, which can be quite busy at certain times of day. Traffic can also be heavy on some of the main roads in the town, such as Route 110 and Route 25A, especially during rush hour or peak travel times. However, compared to the nearby New York City metropolitan area, Huntington is generally considered to be a more relaxed and laid-back community.
