  • David Wood (Ph.D) presents an excellent case for the historicity of Christ's resurrection from the dead. And these are just a few pieces of evidences - volumes of scholarship have been done on the resurrection! The empty tomb is also very well attested even by the enemies of the disciples. If the disciples stole the body (as the ancient Jews held to) then this would never result in the conversion of Paul (an enemy of the church) and James (the skeptic unbelieving brother of Jesus). And why would the disciples knowingly suffer and die for something they know is a lie? This idea simply cannot account for all the facts.
Christianity would have DIED in the 1st century hadn't Jesus rose from the dead!

      Explaining Story Magic.
In the stories of Star Trek, they have great advances in technology, I'm going to call a word I created called Superscience. There are advances in technology described like Warp Drive Star Ships, Transporters and Photon Torpedoes. Now do we think those technologies actually exist? I'm going to say no, we think that Gene Roddenberry made those up. How much does it cost to make up Warp Drive Star Ships and use them in stories? Very little. If someone was to do the actual research into matter-antimatter energy process and then getting that energy system to bend space to allow the Star Ship to travel at tremendous speeds would take a lot of money and research and time. Trillions of dollars and sometimes failed experiments.

But to put Warp Drive Star Ships in stories, the cost is not much at all.

Consider making up stories about a God. How much does it cost to make up stories about a God that can walk on water, turn water into wine, tell fishermen on which side of the boat to throw their nets to catch a great amount of fish. How much does that cost? Also very little. How much does it cost to write stories about a God that can die a horrible, painful death, but then comes back to life 3 days later? Also the actual cost is not that much. There is a phrase from History 'paper holds still.'

What the stories of Christianity and the Religion of Christianity has done is try to claim that the writers of the stories paid a huge price by being tortured and many times killed for the stories. But lots of people in the same time period in History were tortured and killed for many different reasons. Does not make the stories true.

But what does Jesus do or not do to make us think that the stories are not true? It is all the other knowledge that a real Nature's God would have that is valuable information to humans, but Jesus of Christianity does not tell us.

Jesus is a Supernatural God. Jesus of Christianity is never a Nature's God. A Nature's God would have all sorts of knowledge about Nature.
A Nature's God would know about Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Geography, Mathematics, etc..
A Nature's God would know about printing presses, eye glasses, great ideas on how to advance economics.
A Nature's God would know best ways to prevent all diseases. Such as Hippocrates suggested that diseases are natural, they are not caused by the Gods or were superstition which advanced Medical Science and was the start of Medical Science. Why would a God bother to Supernaturally heal humans he came across? If Jesus really wanted to do good for humans, Jesus would have told us how to prevent disease naturally and that would have been a million times better.

Does your Christian God like to watch from heaven humans suffer and die to diseases that could have been prevented if only your Christian God spoke up? Modern Science and modern medicine must really piss off Jesus.

Jesus just does not know enough about Nature. Jesus has some clever parables, that people in the ancient world might consider coming from a God, but to those of us in the modern world, we should know better. Jesus can do the Supernatural, which any storyteller can have their character do. But knowledge of Nature is not easily made up by human storytellers.

That was why Thomas Jefferson put in the Declaration of Independence of the US the words, 'Laws of Nature and of Nature's God.' Jefferson read a lot from the Philosophers of the Age of Enlightenment and did not think that Christianity was true, that Christianity was from a God. Jefferson thought Christianity was from human story tellers.

Are the events of Star Trek miracles? Or are they human created stories?

      Here is what prevents the Bubonic Plague from killing people, from Wikipedia;
(Bubonic plague outbreaks are controlled by pest control and modern sanitation techniques.)
In the years 1347 to 1351, 1/3rd of the population of Europe died to the Bubonic Plague.
Parents would have been praying to Jesus of Christianity to protect themselves and their family from harm and children would have prayed to Jesus of Christianity to protect their parents from harm. Did Jesus tell them how to prevent Bubonic Plague when they were praying on how to protect themselves from harm? 1/3rd of the population died. The reason we don't usually have Bubonic Plague around is because of the modern sanitation and pest control. Was that to much for Jesus to explain to the Christians in Europe?

What convinced me is Pentecost. Before that, the disciples were scared, in hiding, desillusioned. Stephen was already killed. But after that, they were fierce, enboldened, outgoing, nothing could stop them. They had their live's work cut out for them. They suffered, paid with their lives, but they insisted that it was true: that Jesus had risen from the dead. And I think that is what they saw at Pentecost. They saw Him, alive and well. Their belief was not just belief anymore. They were SURE. They KNEW.

As someone who is studying the New Testament at the college level, someone who has studied the idea of textual criticism, someone who committed to the study of this topic for several years before entering college, and as someone who has written a research paper on the very passage that David Wood cites in his opening statement (1 Corinthians 15:1-7), I think my input may be important here, especially seeing the misinformation that is abundant concerning the Gospels and the Pre-Pauline Creed.
1.) It is important to realize that the Bible was originally a circulation of different books, not one single book that was written by a single author. Traditionally, there have been approximately 40 different authors to whom the various books of the Bible have been attributed. This may differ slightly depending on various factors, such as whether or not you accept the JEDP theory as correct or not.The point here is not to nail down who wrote each book of the Bible, but rather to make the finer point that we are not dealing with a single document, but rather a collection of different documents.
2.) I would like to talk about the claims that I have seen in this thread about the Gospels next. Let me start with this: there are very few scholars who deny Marcan Priority. Furthermore, it seems obvious to me based on the internal evidence. Therefore, it is almost certain that Mark's Gospel was the first one that was written. Internal and external evidence suggests that the Gospel was originally penned somewhere between the early 50's AD to the early 60's AD. Certain characteristics of Jesus' Olivet Discourse in this gospel, as well as other factors relating to the idea of Marcan Priority lead to this conclusion. For a fuller treatment, I would point you to F.F. Bruce's work, "The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable?," which gives, I think, a fair treatment on the subject and is still considered an essential introduction to New Testament textual criticism today by many. The next Gospel to be written was likely Luke's in the early to mid 60's. Again, internal and external evidence suggest this date. Again, the way the Olivet Discourse is presented is a factor in this, as well as the dating of Acts, which is almost unanimously accepted among scholars to be written by the same author as Luke, and by an eyewitness to many of the events contained in the latter half of Acts. The third to be written was likely Matthew, although the date is often disputed. Depending on which scholar you consult, you will likely get a date between 65-85 AD for its composition. My view is that it was likely composed sometime around or shortly after 70 AD, but this is based largely, I admit, on my understanding of Matthew's purpose in writing his gospel. There are many things that must be debated here, but this is Regardless, it is accepted by even the majority of liberal scholars that Matthew was composed prior to 85 AD. John's gospel is unique in that it is unlike the Synoptics (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) in much of its content. For this reason, it is largely believed that the Gospel of John was composed independently of the other three. There are two different views for the dating of John's Gospel. The minority view places it in the 40's or 50's AD. While this cannot be entirely ruled out, the evidence seems to be against it. It is more likely that this Gospel was composed in the 90's. In short, the claim that the Gospels were composed centuries after the fact is absolutely false.
3.) Some might take issue with the fact that I used the traditional names for the Gospels, despite the question that this may not be accurate. It is true that the Gospels originally circulated anonymously, but this is to the credit of the traditional view rather than its demerit. It is only in respect to the far later (2nd century and beyond) pseudographical and gnostic works that we see names being ascribed. The reason is that the authors of these books wanted to provide an air of authority to these pseudographical books. The fact that the first-century documents circulated anonymously is an indication that they did not feel the need to ascribe a name to the text, likely because the author was already known. To make the next point short for the sake of space, the concept that Mark and Luke wrote the Gospels ascribed to them is more likely given that they were known by the early church to not have been in the inner circle of Jesus' disciples. While it is a remote possibility that Mark had met Jesus near the end of His ministry, it is not certain. In other words, Mark and Luke would have been unlikely candidates. If authority needed to be established concerning the Gospels, we should expect them to ascribe these Gospels to someone like Peter or James or John. The fact that these Gospels are ascribed to individuals who were not part of Jesus's original group counts in favor of the accuracy of the ascription. This leaves Matthew and John. Matthew and John were understood to be the authors of these texts from the early days of the church. While it is more likely than not that these were the actual authors of the Gospels that bear their names, absolute certainty cannot be reached either way. What can be said is that there are certain portions of these Gospels that reek of eyewitness testimony, and portions of which have been confirmed by archaeology. For example, the Fourth Gospel includes a segment of text (John 5:1-16), which includes statement concerning a pool at Bethesda which archaeologists believe they have uncovered. Furthermore, the author appears to have knowledge of local superstitions concerning the pool. An outsider would likely not have had this knowledge had he not been in or around Jerusalem around this time, and almost certainly wouldn't have known specific details about the structure of the place, such as the pool's having five covered colonnades, which, again, has been verified by archaeology. Since the First Gospel, traditionally ascribed to Matthew, uses Mark for a source, its historicity will be tied up closely with Mark's historicity.
4.) +LondonJo mentioned that one of the Gospels is called "Q." This is an incorrect statement based on a misunderstanding of current theories of textual criticism. None of the Gospels are known as "Q." "Q" comes from the German word for "source," which is "quelle." It is believed that an early document circulated, possibly as early as 40 AD (although the exact date is disputed), which contained sayings of Jesus. It was not a Gospel in its own right. Rather, the authors of the Synoptic Gospels appear to have used this as a source when composing their Gospels. There are also the "M" and "L" sources, which appear in Matthew and Luke respectively. The "M" source is understood to be a source which adds information in Matthew's account that is found in neither Mark or Luke. "L" is the same, except it is for information found in Luke's Gospel. In addition to these, other sources have also been identified by textual critics. Internal evidence suggests that Mark's passion narrative came from an independent source. What is peculiar about Mark's Gospel is that he seems to link together short stories and often jumps directly from one scene into another scene without much to connect the two. Strangely, when you get to Mark 14, you have one long, mostly continuous narrative from the early verses of Mark 14 through Mark 16:8. This and other considerations have led the majority of scholars to conclude that this passion narrative did not originate with Mark. It doesn't match his style of writing. It follows, then, that Mark is relying on a different source for his information about the passion, death, and empty tomb. The majority of scholars hold that Mark is relying what has come to be named the "Pre-Marcan Passion Narrative." Internal evidence seems to suggest that this Passion Narrative may go back to within the first 7-10 years after the crucifixion. In summary, the Gospels are not a single document. They are four separate documents, based on even earlier documents that were in circulation.
5.) Some of the earliest Jesus traditions are to be found in Paul's letters. I prefer to use the epistles where Pauline authorship is undisputed, just to make it easier to defend my point. The undisputed letters which contain clear Jesus traditions that serve as a good example are 1 Corinthians (mentioned by David Wood in the video), and 1 Thessalonians. The creed that Paul cites in 1 Corinthians 15:3-7 is almost unanimously believed to predate Paul and is almost unanimously believed by even the most skeptical scholars to have been written no more than 2-5 years after the crucifixion. This gives us a glimpse at the earliest Christian beliefs. There are four early Christian beliefs that are clearly communicated here:
A.) The disciples believed that Christ died and connected this to the Old Testament. Again, this is not seriously disputed among historians.
B.)The disciples believed that Jesus was buried. This formula doesn't say by whom, but we shouldn't expect it to, since it isn't in the nature of a creedal formula like this one to give every detail.
C.) The disciples believed that Jesus was raised bodily on the third day. The Greek word used here (egeiro) ALWAYS denotes a physical body that moves from a prone position to a standing position. This is true when the word is used in both Jewish and pagan literature of the time. It would be inconceivable how this could make its way into such an early creed if the belief in Christ's bodily resurrection were not held to from the earliest days of the church. This establishes the early belief in the resurrection of Jesus.
D.) The disciples believed that they experienced appearances of Jesus after His death.
Since I have basically written a short essay, I am going to cut it off here. The important thing is that we address the data rather than post our preconceived notions of what the data entails.

Saul was an exceptional Jew in his century and so zealous that he watched over the clothing of those who didn't want to get mussed up while killing Christians. He met Jesus on the road to Damascus only later to receive both his physical sight and his spiritual insight as to the truth of Jesus being crucified, resurrected and that He was and is God.
David Wood had as much contempt for Christians as Saul who became Paul. He went beyond watching others being killed and holding their coasts, he tried to kill his own father. While in jail he met a Christian who would not back down but stood his ground and proved to David Wood that the Christian faith was an objective faith but David wanted the truth and the truth led him to believe as confidently in Jesus being God and resurrected from the dead as he was confident that atheism was true.
David, who was antisocial and full of hatred, as you now can see, is not motivated by hate but by the peace and love of Jesus Christ within Him. Moreover some of the finest of Christians partner with him to witness to both Muslims and atheists. David Wood has lots of qualities like Paul. The love which flows in their mutual dedication to the Gospel is a UA-cam phenomenon and itself is a compelling evidence of the truth of the indwelling Holy Spirit that people want what they have: love, confidence, boldness and most of all, a faith which has put them in an awesome relationship with the real and true God.
Before the ministry of David Wood and his colleagues, very few Muslims had become Christian. We are now witnessing the battering down of hell's gates. And Muslims are coming out of that faith in droves upon droves. The love of Christ Jesus is that compelling. And this is a testimony to the truth of the Gospel, that men who hated the very nature of Christianity have not only embraced it, but are doing so at risk of their own lives.
To me this is a most compelling evidence that Jesus will return soon. Ah, and I want to be ready, don't you?

David, just so you can pass on the information that Jesus was seen after he died you may want to use what I use. When I talk to people about this matter I explaine it in the following manner; today we would take pictures and recording's of the event, but we had no devices that could do that when Jesus was crucified & was resurrected. But we did have "eyewitnesses" and they did write this down in the letter &/or book form. Yes, we had "living witnesses" that "saw" him and wrote their experiences down. This was as close as we could get to visual or audio recording's. Yes, witnesses wrote down, in writing that they "saw" "heard" and "touched" Jesus after he was "crucified and died". What more can a man say! AMEN,AMEN!!!

If you have a humble spirit when you are looking for the Truth (I wasn't even looking for God, I just wanted to know the truth), God will open the doors to His divine knowledge and everything will make sense to you.

There can be no 'historic case' for any event for which there are no eye-witnesses! In fact even when people profess to have witnessed an event with their own eyes (and possibly really believe it!) we can be sceptical if it is of a magical nature or they have reason to want to believe it. A case in point is that of the indian Guru Satya Sai Baba who died only a few years ago and was said to have all the attributes of Jesus - born of a virgin, a prodigy, raising the dead, healing, performing miracles. 1 Million people turned up to his birthday party. That's a lot of eye-witnesses so by your logic he must be a real holy man! Yet, I am sure you will not for a moment accept him as a new messiah.

    • @cyberlizardcouk
      @cyberlizardcouk 5 років тому

@Tony DC the dream state is objective in that it can be physically measured... We know it occurs as we can physical monitor it. The content of the dream as it cannot be measured regardless of how 'real' it is to the dreamer is subjective as an outsider, is the non dreamer cannot verify the contents.
Subjectivity and objectivity are not so much about the accuracy of anything but the locality...
In psychiatric terms, if you are telling me about an experience you have had for example a dream or the feelings invoked in an experience these are subjective matters as perceived by yourself.
If you told me you had been to the park and it was four hundred meters from the entrance to the exit that would be objective as it can be externally verified by a second party.
Witness statements in court are purely subjective accounts however by testing the statements, verifiable objective facts can be secured.
So while subjective statements are useful, ie testimonies about our lord and saviour they can always be dismissed by an unbeliever or anyone else for that matter as they remain subjective in nature.

I’m currently a doubting Christian, but I can see where the hallucination hypothesis comes from. If you believe the apostles were convinced of Christ’s resurrection, as the evidence suggests, but you don’t believe in the supernatural, something physical must have convinced them. It seems odd that several would had the same hallucination though. I’m going to be studying contemporary accounts of miracles and near-death experiences. If miracles are possible, then the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the best explanations for the behavior of the apostles.

      @dannyd1098 5 років тому

@@michaelw7504 you can demonstrate math, some mathematical equations are easier than others. A book is irrelevant.
To prove ancient writings is not as simple. We look for documents from contemporary historians and other such records that have been documented at the time. Those documents should then be dissected and tested as well, by carbon-dating and piecing them together with other documents. We can piece together the past through archaeological discoveries as well - go where the evidence leads us. What we don't do is start with a conclusion and then try fitting the evidence to our conclusion.
For Jesus, all we have is a story (several differently detailed stories) about a man named Jesus found in the bible. The supposed witnesses of Jesus are found only in the same stories and the historians that are usually referred to who account for Jesus, Tacitus and Josephus, were not contemporaries of Jesus either. You may have all this evidence, but it's not convincing evidence, it's bad evidence. Appealing to him having a minimal existence, "A Jewish carpenter who never traveled more than 200 miles from his home, and died a criminals death..." is a deceptive tactic. I'd argue the bible suggests he had much more than a minimal existence. If he did all that the bible said he did then why would 200-miles and a criminals death even matter? If anything, his death would be a major point in history that would have a solid record, but where's the convincing evidence for that or for anything about Jesus described in your bible.

It's easy to deny the truth, and hard to live by the truth. But those who stick by Jesus will live and going to have life in abundance. And those who reject life will unfortunately find themselves locked out when they see Isaac, Abraham and Moses, and all the other prophets sitting around the table in heaven with Jesus because these believers chose to live,
but they decided to reject the life, but nobody can ever cease to exist, so there's only one place to go in which life is not which is the worst place imaginable.

To begin, my life has been one of creativity. It is that through creating I came to know of Love and through Love did I come to create. The dynamic at work in it all for me has been my imagination, and that my work as a composer serves as testament to my Faith in God, given that I consider God to be my imagination.
Some thoughts worth considering if I may, in light of the above, and the creative spirit that has gifted this world so many things at which we marvel, and that more often than not serve to sustain us as a species:
Consider if you will, a mind whose imagination knew no bounds in tailoring such spectacles as 'The Taming of the Shrew'; who penned tales of truth and treachery, benevolence and betrayal, love and death, and death as sacrifice in honour of love; dualities within a state to tax even the greatest of truths, the likes of which the world will never bear witness to again.
A man whose mind sustained him; in whom the rhythm and texture of words found no other counterpart within the genre of his expression, neither before or after the advent of his being; not in any penned history, tragedy or comedy, neither poem nor varied part that saw his art adapted by way of experimental variance to the contemporary so as to appeal more simply to the herds that otherwise might not have heard his "teachings" for what they were.
Where it could well be argued that the canon of works comprising thirty-seven plays, two narrative poems and a collection of sonnets Shakespeare presented to the world "says it all", did not Jesus say it all too, but more precisely, and with no less poetry at play by way of The Sermon on the Mount, and has not The Sermon on the Mount stood the greater test of time?
Not that it can be held true, nor even refuted, for we will never surely know, but how much of Shakespeare's work, if we consider it in just proportion to the highest of ideals, could be aligned to the allure of such a sermon that might have served as serum for the sorrows of his own personal life, the death of his son in 1596, his father in 1601 and his mother seven years later in 1608, not to mention the approach of his own passing in 1616, the cause of which is not known ...
What frailties of the human experience does Shakespeare touch upon that Jesus did not to divine the way?
Against the arras that was to become the backdrop for all subsequent literary endeavours by poets and playwrights alike, being of expression the most ideal, let us now consider The Holy Scriptures, penned as they were so many centuries before, believed by the devout to be a matter of fact, and the "in doubt" a moment of mere fiction; how in light of love their provenance matters little but for the friction that is of this:
    * For any mind to imagine the coming of a Messiah; the presence of a divinity in human form, that such a form as was Jesus became The Christ who made the blind to see and the lame to walk; who removed illness and raised the dead but to be sacrificed for the sins of the world as was he so humbled before the face of humankind at its most cruel, and then to be resurrected, suggests that within the scribes who had not the inherent styling of speech as did Shakespeare, but whose servitude was such in purity to possibly surpass him - each purity of thought being a pause for thought - was the presence of The Divine, a consummate spirit that was itself both the creator and the creation of His Story: History.
How could they have been "imagined" otherwise?
How can you first imagine God without God first being present within you? How does any artist imagine their ideal without that ideal first being present in his or her being, or is that where our humility draws the line, at any hint we should so honour the power that first bestowed upon us that by which we ourselves are honoured?
To that must then be considered this: how can you first imagine evil without evil first being present within you? How could even Shakespeare first imagine treachery without treachery first being present in him? But then, things can be consciously willed and that they be so willed does not imply one necessarily has the want to occasion them. Conversely, you do not have to be present in God for God to be present within you, and is that not the divine mercy of God, that his love is so to remain present and regardless?
It is that whatever tale you tell should adhere to the highest tenet of truth any legalism or casuistry can ever admit, the truth that saw jealousy kill Jesus.
And what about the music of Bach, a voice "not quite God" but near enough to at least make you want to believe in the Almighty, and at most exclaims : "I do!"
And for that matter, what of the matter that is of you?
If The Bible is the sum total of its contradictions, is that not Life? Is that not Love?
Is not the greater question one of acceptance?
Are we not all, as is Life and Love, the sum total of our contradictions?
Therefore, is not The Bible a testament of Life and the treasury of Love one's faith requires of it to be - whatever your belief - if in what you believe there is the presence/prayer-sense of Love? Why bother to debunk or even approve of it, after all, are we not ourselves the greatest piece of fiction before the reality that will be our fate!
Is that anything to shake a spear at?

11:26 Carrier and William P. Lazarus are scholars as well as present on the internet.
As to the pretence, it's not their scholarship, nor putting yours over theirs, but rather a reevaluation of what "legendary development" can and can't do which is the answer.
Let's say Imhotep is a rehash of Joseph in Egypt (my position and that of some other Christians) or inversely even Joseph of Imhotep (I do not grant it, but we can use it for argument's sake) as per novelist the late Bernard Simonay, there are some things we don't find legendary development doing.
It's not turning an "engineer" (of sorts) into a warlike general.
It's not turning a dreaming prophet into a public preacher and miracle worker like Elijah.
It is however garbling identities and alignments and even (given king lists like Turin and Abydos) chronology.
Now, adding a resurrection is not garbling an identity, nor an alignment, nor chronology. It's just changing everything in a way legendary development won't do.
Or take the Germanic legend of Rabenschlacht, it may be conflating two different battles at Ravenna, and is certainly pitting two people against each other who lived at a century's different times : Theoderic and Ermaneric.
But both were kings and warriors in real life and both remain kings and warriors in the legend.
