The obvious question: what movies would you add to the list? Bonus points if you can fit it into a category of meaning (whether one of mine or one of your own)! Thanks again to everyone who has been supporting my work over these past few years, as I also mention at the end, this video really was for all of you!
For me Against the Ice is definitly on the list. The psychological and social aspects of being stranded in a freezing cold landscape are so well done. Its a stunning portrayal of what it means to endure and keep hope in yourself, in each others and in getting found and seeing your loved ones again.
Everything Everywhere All At Once, because in a way that no other movie does quite so uniquely, it speaks to experiences and outlooks on life that are extremely resonant - especially if you’re Asian or Asian-American :)
I would add to the Humanity category, Lantana, by Ray Lawrence. (Bliss, also by Lawrence could also fit into this category). This is a perfect film, and was critically acclaimed, but Lawrence’s work to have dropped off the critical landscape. This movie made me question my whole outlook on life, and in particular, how I relate to others, and whether I was being as genuine.
You are one of the most insightful, contemplative, and introspective people on YT, not just in terms of discussing films but overall especially in the sense of evaluating the human condition in a very measured and profound way. Well done.
If the peice of cinema doesn't reach you the introspective nature this channel's videos will. This channel is a gold mine in the sea of content there is on YT.
I knew you would put Kindom of Heaven in there. I must say, as someone who finds that movie very meaningful, it's nice to see someone so knowledgable in film hold it in such such high regard.
Thank you for this amazing list, I have a lot to add to the watchlist! I humbly submit Wong Kar-wai's "In The Mood for Love" (2000) as a notable entry in the 'Love' category
2001: A Space Odyssey and Blade Runner back to back at the start of your list can feel most fitting. Because both films make us question so much about many pivotal issues. The Shawshank Redemption and No Country For Old Men would both be on my list too. Thank you, Tom. 👍🏻
Lots of great films on this list, but I'm especially glad to see that you included Arrival. Such a beautiful film in every way. Finally got around to watching it for the first time last year and it was the perfect time for me to experience it with all that was going on in my life then. This movie makes you ask yourself if you want to merely exist, or if you want to truly live.
Some really great picks - I've only not seen a few - and when each new category began, I'd think "oh, war - I'd definitely have "Apocalypse Now", Thin Red Line & "Come & See" - and there they were! Thanks for this long-form piece, I really enjoyed it.

I absolutely love this channel. The focus on humanism, philosophy, ethics, existentialism, etc is what is so refreshing. And the fact that our host has such acute and nuanced insight into the structure and composition of cinema, it makes this list all the more valuaboe.
Existence: The Fountain (Darren Aronofsky) I have not watched it fully, don't know if I ever will, and yet I have high regards for it, I skipped most of the present time hospital scenes and etc and just couldn't watch others because it still managed to have me not just in a couple of tears but nearly sobbing there nose running, yes it was nighttime and I sort of did needed the movie at the time but yeah it just is amazing, transcending this life we have right now, being okay with our death because it's not the end not just in another realm or existence whatever it may or may not be but in here we're certain our body, ashes etc at some point in Earth's life it will amount to something transform into so much unite with the earth and then with whatever cosmic dust once our sun takes the earth; and loving someone, and appreciating all that we have here and etc idk it's been a while and are memories of an incomplete view, there might've been more might've been less, I'm not LSOO to write a good essay on it🤷♂️, which he does have one so watch the film and his video
I can think of a few films that I personally would have included. Although the more unpredictable these lists can be, the more interesting they of course are.

have you watched An Elephant Sitting Still? I'm not sure which category it'd fit into - it's a pretty depressing exploration of the main characters. Maybe Humanity? I bring it up because Hu Bo was essentially a protege to Bela Tarr and you absolutely can tell the inspiration. Unfortunately Hu Bo took his life around the time his only feature, An Elephant Sitting Still, was released. Part XI - Depression in Cinema/ Love Lost - An Elephant Sitting Still, Aftersun, Anatomy of a Fall, Amour, The Whale(or Requiem for a Dream), The Deer Hunter
Many thanks for allowing us to see the greatest films ever made. The haunting voice of narrator leads us to think of the most profound questions ever asked by mankind. I have not watched the entirety of your video yet ... I just wanted to comment on the list. It is a great list. I have already watched a lot and ironically (or not) some of my favourite movies that I have yet to see (strange I know) but I have seen moments from them and know that I will not be disappointed when I get to watch them, a couple of Tarkovsky for example. I agree that there is no such thing as the best of anything. It is all subjective and relative. My love for movies came out of watching black and white movies with my Dad on a saturday night so my head is filled with B movies and Noir and Hammer Horror. Humans do everything with the story in mind, it makes up our daily communications. Those that understand this can learn, share, teach, experience more profoundly. Those that don't stumble through life seeking thrills.
The Spongebob Movie and anything involving Wallace and Gromit. They reminded me to hold on to my childhood, to find absurdity laugh-out-loud funny, and to spread that childlike, silly joy on to my younger relatives, and to give them a love of "weakness." There are no macho heros or leather-clad women, only silly characters being silly, while also being moral. They remain classics in my household that me and my nieces and nephews watch together ever Christmas. Sometimes, you don't need Brian De Palma or Marlon Brando to be the greatest films.
I would love a category on ethos/community. How we experience our world together and learn to appreciate each other and build something together. This is going to sound like a joke, I know, but I mean it unironically. I would start that list off with Black Dynamite. It caries it's ethos and process of building and belonging from behind the camera into the movie in a way you can feel and taste it's so thickly laid throughout the movie.
Though I can't agree with most of your movies because of their depressing and/or hyper-violent natures, I am impressed with your flawless editing and commentary. Kudos! My list of favorite/most impactful movies would include: The Hunger Games, The Wizard of Oz, Star Wars, The Matrix, LOTR, The English Patient, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Fall, Shogun (the original), The Count of Monte Cristo (the original), Sense and Sensibility (Ang Lee), and of course, the greatest film ever made: Lawrence of Arabia.
Thank you for this. Re Jurassic Park: we did listen to the experts. That's our problem in today's technocratic society. What we haven't listened to -- and what many of us crave -- is the voice of wisdom, the voice of true authority. Higher truths will almost always be drowned out by our baseness and frailty.... Almost. He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
My additions: Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, Last Tango in Paris, American History X, American Beauty, Jacob's Ladder, The Iron Giant, and The Unforgiven.
A dangerous list. Movies are an extremely personal thing. For instance, I love Monsters University and Palookiville. These two movies had a profound effect on me across a significant time spance for the same reason. They're about losers. People who have to learn to be okay with being just okay. But they would never be on a best list, most life altering list, or even okay list.
The Assassination of Jesse James is a brilliant inclusion. I think only Unforgiven surpassed it as a Western. But Arrival? Have you READ Ted Chiang's short story? The themes in the movie were painfully dumbed down, and a tone-deaf (in light of the 2016 U.S. election), ham-fisted message about warmongering was shoehorned into the ending. It's visually gorgeous, but thematically puerile.
Like if not Love the Concept but ya (Unfortunately) Either Forgot and/or Down Right Ignored a couple.. 😬😐😬😬😬 Cloud Atlas.. ... Never Gonna Snow Again.. The Peasants.. . Blade Runner 2049.. ..... Monday.. ... Empire of Light.. ....... The Master.. . 😬😬😬😬😬😕🫤🤔😬😬😬😬😬😬😬
The obvious question: what movies would you add to the list? Bonus points if you can fit it into a category of meaning (whether one of mine or one of your own)! Thanks again to everyone who has been supporting my work over these past few years, as I also mention at the end, this video really was for all of you!
The only two films i would add are Three Colours Red and La Haine, amazing video!
For me Against the Ice is definitly on the list. The psychological and social aspects of being stranded in a freezing cold landscape are so well done. Its a stunning portrayal of what it means to endure and keep hope in yourself, in each others and in getting found and seeing your loved ones again.

Secret Life of Walter Mitty & Soul are two films I love that changed my outlook on many things during my formative years.
Great movies! Especially "Soul" was unexpectedly good.
Two other movies I really like are "Into The Wild" and "Peaceful Warrior".
Secret life of Walter Mitty is a gem....my most favourite
This is beautiful. Thank you Tom.
Holy moly. 3 and a half hours...
What a gift ❤

You have a great channel! THANK YOU for your work! I'd add A Hidden Life, Silence, La Dolce Vita, La Bamba and Biutiful.

Thank you, I feel sleep mid way last knight because I was exhausted. This helped me to get back on it right on track this morning!
Movies that really impacted me:
About Time
The Spitfire Grill
Finding Neverland
Truman Show
The Tree of Life (on your list)
Keep it coming mate , watching the ones I've already watched
I use his videos for ASMR myself haha
Love to see the respect for Malick.
This was epic, too epic to watch in one sitting. I admire your intentions. As for the sensational title, The Fifty Most Life-Changing Movies Ever Made, I can think of only two that compelled me to deliberately change my mind - I, Daniel Blake and The Father. To your more nuanced title, 'meaningful', I immediately claim Stalker, Solaris, Army in the Shadows, Of Time and the City, Blade Runner and Paris Texas
Some I’d include if I was making a list:
-The Irishman. I think this is my favorite Scorsese movie, honestly. I think it fits best in Humanity, and maybe even Existence, if I were to use your categories. A movie like Goodfellas was bombastic and thrilling, perfectly illustrating the life of the Mob. Yet this one was quieter, slower, and infinitely more frightening, especially with that last shot. It’s a reflection on choices and consequences, as well as loyalty and betrayal. I’ll always love Goodfellas and Godfather and whatnot, but this movie will forever stick with me in a way no movie like it will.
-Walter Mitty, maybe in either Humanity or Passion. There’s just something about that’s so endearing and moving, and it encourages me to get out and do something with my life! I was like 18 when this came out, so the messages fit so well with where I was at in life, thinking about moving on and out into the world.
-Finally, I’d include The Count of Monte Cristo. This definitely fits in Justice. Man, what a story. I don’t know what more needs to be said!
Keep cooking brothar

Thank you for the video. I couldn’t help but be a bit surprised to see Wings of desire isn’t on your list since it could actually fit into every one of your category. A truly remarkable piece of art.
I look forward to your videos the way I look forward to new poetry for my favorite writers. Bless you sir
Really cool. I am obsessed with insightful, thoughtful movies that are really "just films". Or as some say "could be a play". The idea of making A LOT of virtually nothing is just irresistible to me. Considering that, my top ten list of those gems goes:

3. Primer
4. Coherence
5. The Artifice Girl
6. Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes
7. Exam
8. Memento
9. Los Cronocrimenes
10. Before Sunrise
For me, The Tree of Life is my number 1.
I love how your first pick in the Love section is a bromance story, genuinely based choice.
I love that the likes of Once Upon A Time In America and Memories of a Murder got some recognition but there’s some massive exclusions here too
I absolutely love this channel. The focus on humanism, philosophy, ethics, existentialism, etc is what is so refreshing. And the fact that our host has such acute and nuanced insight into the structure and composition of cinema, it makes this list all the more valuaboe.

At the end, light itself stops working.
Tree of life and 2001 are life changing.

I wrote my masters dissertation on Satantango. Happy to see it here.
I would also add Hayao Miyazaki/studio Ghibli and Zhang Yimou movies.

Wow! What a long video I'm excited! I'm sure in about 3 and 1/2 hours I'll have comments.
GOAT DROPPED ❤
No Matrix?..
3 hours?! I got kids, man!
first comment, gonna end my dad watching this essay- thanks for your passion from another cinephile
Nice Freudian slip there
Perfection
I would love a category on ethos/community. How we experience our world together and learn to appreciate each other and build something together. This is going to sound like a joke, I know, but I mean it unironically. I would start that list off with Black Dynamite. It caries it's ethos and process of building and belonging from behind the camera into the movie in a way you can feel and taste it's so thickly laid throughout the movie.
Cool list, especially the last part! But 4 (!) out of 5 movies are anglophone; that’s really weak from a “best of”-perspective.
How many of these are available in the criterion collection?
NO PLAGUE DOGS?
THE ONLY FILM THAT CAN CHANGED MY LIFE
NOO
Almost. He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
jeezus christ dude bravo
Grace, clear my calendar.
Secret life of Walter Mitty
My additions:
Everything, Everywhere, All at Once,
Last Tango in Paris,
American History X,
American Beauty,
Jacob's Ladder,
The Iron Giant, and
The Unforgiven.
I have exam tomorrow but it seems more interesting
First! 😅 Love you, LSOO 😍
Just so we all know, Terrance mallick is all across this list, and rightly so !!!
Cool Hand Luke in Society/Existence.
Movies that I don't agree and vastly overrated in this list: arrival, prestige, good will hunting, before sunset, satantango, heat, inception, ikiru.
Goodness❤❤❤❤
