21st Century Schizoid Man (King Crimson) - Bass Cover by Richard Ireson

- My interpretation of the amazing bass line to King Crimson's classic: 21st Century Schizoid Man. I was planning on releasing this to coincide with the launch of the 50th anniversary King Crimson documentary but I figure that since the lyrics seemed apt under the present circumstances (28th Feb 2022) that I'd release it now.
Cat's foot, iron claw
Neurosurgeons scream for more
Paranoia's poison door
21st century schizoid man
Blood rack, barbed wire
Politicians funeral pyre
Innocents raped with napalm fire
21st century schizoid man
Death seed, blind man's greed
Poets starving, children bleed
Nothing he's got, he really needs
21st century schizoid man

Thank you again.
This is definitely one of the most killer bass performances I've seen on UA-cam!
Wow, thank you so much!🙂
Great job! By the way,I like how the song sounds with the bass at a higher volume, like this..
Thank you, glad you liked it!🙂
Yes, a new appreciation of the track
Excellent playing on the busy sections. How you retained all those lines is well, beyond me. The Jazz sounds great.
Thank you. It was quite a challenge to remember it all!🤔😂
probably the best bass performance ive seen in my life, shit is raw as hell
Well thank you so much! Though I think that says more about how many bassists you've seen rather than my playing!!!🤣🤣🤣
That man feel and enjoying the song, Amazing,😲
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!😊
My jaw is on the floor - that you a) pulled this off with such aplomb and b) that you went fingerstyle over pick and were so damn quick. That's one killer performance, especially the "Mirrors" mid-section ... somebody call the fire brigade because that sh-t was on fire🔥🚒👩🚒
(It's nuts to think that Greg Lake didn't even play bass before King Crimson and picked it up at the request of Robert Fripp!)
Thank you dude!🙂
Greg's playing on this was challenging for me to say the least!🤣 Not only for the speed but also for remembering it!
I'm kind of obsessed with this track at this point, you did a phenomenal job
Thank you!😊
This sounds fantastic!
Brilliant performance and such big and full bass sound!
Beautiful!👍🎼🎶🎶
Thank you so much!🙂
Great playing and very nice bass!
Thank you and thank you!😊
Holy crapola! Just seeing this, mate. You never give yourself an easy pass. Love it. Top work as ever.
Cheers dude, very much appreciated!😊
A day in the life of a pro bass player
Ha, I wish!
Amazing cover !
Thank you so much!🙂
that was RIDICULOUS, congratulations👏
Thank you, glad you liked it!😊
that was truly amazing 👏👏
Thank you, that is very much appreciated!😊
thatmiddle secion is amazingly played. I have no idea how to even get to a quarter of your talent. super tight
Thank you most kindly!🙂. I've never wanted to compare my playing with anyone else's, I just practice in the hope that I'll be better than I was yesterday.
@@RichardIresonMusician i need your practice routine, haha
@@JK_35 Little and often I find makes things stick better than a long practice say once a week. Try to make time every day if you can. If possible leave your practice equipment set up and your guitar out so all you need to do is pick it up and play. When I'm learning something complicated I tend to slow things down and gradually increase to normal speed as muscle memory develops. Finally, time, nothing happens overnight!👴🙂
fantastico, è la migliore cover che ho visto di questa canzone, ti sono grato per aver condiviso questo video, saluti!
Thank you, that's very much appreciated!🙂
man that playing and tone kicks ass!
Thank you!🙂
Amazing bass cover. Congratulations, Richard !
Thank you!😀
Great job! It shows you put time into it, this didn’t take you 5 mins!
Thank you!🙂 and yes you are correct, just a few weeks more than 5 minutes!😂😂😂
Beautifully played!! Love that bass sound!! Well done!
Thank you so much dude!🙂
Bravo! Fabulous performance!
Thank you!😊
that ending part with triplets is kicking my ass
Glad you like it!🙂
Skilfully played! Really well performed bass cover .
Thank you so much!🙂
Love the tone!
Thank you!😊
Excellent bass playing Richard
Thank you most kindly sir!🙂
Hi Richard, check out my new bass cover,The Clash,London Calling. ua-cam.com/video/tlVeRo3t8bY/v-deo.html Hope you like this one, thanks as always,Andy👍
love the emotion!
Cheers dude!🙂
formidable!! bravo!!
Thank you!😊
Wow!
😊
Great PHAT tone and attack for fingers!!
Thank you! I've never really mastered using a pick so even on tunes where the original used a pick I have to make do with my fingers!😂.
I come back to revisit your page for this video especially. What a masterpiece, man! I'm about 1 and half months into "Aqualung" from Tull - and I suspect it's going to take me, AT LEAST another week or so before I can play it with any degree of satisfaction from start to finish. I have to say, when it takes me THAT long to learn a tune to which I grew up listening, it removes a LOT of the fun and becomes a grueling nightmare. But I'm not quitting now, that's for sure - I'm so close, I can taste victory! All that said, I couldn't be NEARLY as proud of that as you are of this, man! Once again, for like the 14th time - STANDING OVATION, sir!
I am honoured with your kind words, especially coming from such a wonderful player yourself!
I'm also looking forward to your Aqualung!🙂
@@RichardIresonMusician Hopefully I'll have it ready by this weekend! We shall see!
love how into this you got! amazing song and playing
Thanks dude!🙂 I just love playing!
Awesome playing. Love this cover, sounds fantastic!
Fantastic! Very tough bass line. Lake and Michael Giles had to meld brains for a few minutes there.
Thank you!😊
Excellent!
Thank you!🙂
That takes me back!
2016 was it?
We started in late 2014 actually!
@@The_Laser_Wizard oh my! Was it really?🤔

Thank you!😊
pretty neat well done
Thank you!😊
You've got a new subscriber mate. Really enjoyed that.
Are you familiar with the jazz Trio Back Door? Id love to see you cover some stuff from their self titled 1972 album.
Thank you! Will look at Back Door!😊
Great!
Cheers dude!🙂
I think that it sounded fine, mate. Keep it up.
Thank you, I will certainly keep trying!🙂
Amazing cover!!
Thank you!🙂
Thank you!🙂
Oh shit, that's fine!!!
Thank you!🙂
Thanks!
Thank you!🙂
Great performance 👏, it's really hard to find differences between what you did and what Greg Lake did 👍
Thank you, that's very kind of you to say. However, not wanting to dis your listening prowess, there are huge differences between what I'm doing and the late great Greg Lake!😏
@@RichardIresonMusician of course your interpretation differs, yet it really fits into the song.. in that sense that's hard for me to decide which one i like more.. cause you and Greg both did it amazing. 👍
@@alibayat7377 thank you!🙂
Sensacional, saudações do Brasil
Thank you!😊
I wish I could like this twice
Thank you!😊
I cannot get my head around any of the middle
The thing that helped me was to find an isolated bass track and slow it right down.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you!🙂
Whew
Yes, it was a whew moment!🤣
Greg Lake was The King of bass players. Period.
He certainly was good!😊
impressive! what year is that jazz bass? ive got a 71 with a rosewood fretboard 🤘🏻
Thank you most kindly. It's a '73🙂
That sigh of relief at the end was PRICElESS! That was phenomenal, Richard! If I may ask, how long did it take you to commit that to memory?
Hi there, thank you for that, I'm glad you liked it. The sign of relief was after weeks of work. not all the time but each day adding a bit to muscle memory. You can imagine how I felt when they blocked it!
@@RichardIresonMusician HA! Weeks, eh? Even if I grew up listening to that song every single day, and I did NOT, although Crimson was definitely in rotation on my turn-table, it would take me well over 6 months to commit something that complex to memory. I've been told there's some science to practicing for only 10 to 20 minutes per day - but I've never seen any results with that method. I usually put in several hours, every day, for as long as it takes...............and it takes a LONG TIME!
@@Bassistdan1 I wish I could devote hours a day to practice!🤔😂
@@RichardIresonMusician That is the ONLY free time I have between working my graveyard shift and getting ready for bed. Usually about 2, to 3 hours at 6:30AM.
RIP Greg Lake ....Nice job Richard.....from a bass player
RIP Greg indeed!😔 Thank you, glad you liked it. Do you have any of your playing on line anywhere?
Great job, great T shirt! What were you playing through?
Hi Frank, thank you, glad you liked it!🙂. I was plugged straight in to Reaper via my UMC404 interface. I can't remember the exact effects chain but it had some stock compression and saturation. If you want the exact prescription let me know and I'll get it for you.
Hey there just wanted to ask you a question, would you say that this is an easy song to learn by ear? I have some trouble even hearing the bass at some points like in the very beginning of the song when the main riff plays with it.
Can you get better at hearing the bass in a song or are my hears that bad? I'm 21 by the way with some very slight hearing loss, at least according to the tests I have made.
I found this very useful ua-cam.com/video/SM-2bXwrEXY/v-deo.html
What model/version is your Jazz Bass ?
'73 American.
By chance, do you have the sheet music for the song?
Sorry, no.
Outstanding! Glad it's been unblocked.
Thank you sir, glad you liked it! Yeah, it was a bit of a trial!😃
