Hey, if the comics could run for so many years, I think a TV show could work. It would need a big budget though so that might be a major sticking point.
@@mjmellan CGI cartoons suck though....and that would be the most boring show ever, stale as hell like 5 episodes in, look at Wandavision.....people were already growing tired of the TV gimmick what 3 or 4 episodes in?? ouch and the reason a space ship/station show can go so long with the same location is we see different sections all the time bridge, engineering, ten forward/the bar, medical, hangar, entertainment venues like holodeck, sports arenas, theater etc oh and mess hall and with stations specifically we see parks, promenade's, markets, slums etc so it's never just the same spots also think man it's a game series, it won't translate to a fun show very well cus of the lack of detecting crimes, gathering clues, interactions with Gordon etc and you have to think, they stretched 1 episode over 12 hours or so of game then roughly 3 episodes over double that for city and the rest.....a lot of the fat would need to be trimmed off and better writing for dialog and character action/interactions, better pacing for a show and proper explanations for what's going on, frankly i never understood what was up in those games and I'm a veteran of the animated series lolz no, the 1990 animated show totally got batman right and will remain as the best batman ever, the arkham games are okay but not a template for a show, that Assault on Arkham movie was cool though
Bill Bixby's death was absolutely the reason why there was no cross over. You have to remember the last TV movie of the Hulk premiered in 1990 (Death of the Incredible Hulk). Bixby had every intention of bringing Banner and the Hulk back, but his illness soon after shut him down to concentrate on his own personal life, so those projects, including the crossover with Spiderman, were never put into production. Bixby's TV movies were what kept the Hulk alive long after that series was over, so this crossover would bring back Spiderman as well. It would have been tremendous.
Marlee Matlin and Holly Hunter both won Oscars as Best Lead Actress. Both did not talk at all in their performances. Point being, Danny Seagren, even though he only played the character in short segments and without dialogue, he is indeed the first actor to play Spider-Man in costume physically and live action for television. Nicholas Hammond was the second actor to perform the role of Spider-Man on television and since the episode was released theatrically overseas is actually the first actor to play the part in a theatrically released film. Paul Soles is still first.
One of the shows biggest fans is Quentin Tarantino. Would love to see him adapt this somehow. That's why he got the role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Another comic book connection : Ellen Bry was one of Margot Kidder’s stunt doubles in Superman and Superman 2. She’s the figure who bounces from the awning to the fruit stand in the Donner cut of Superman 2.
I used to look forward to watching the show every week! Sure teen boys may have been the target, but this preteen girl loved it too! I hated that it was either preempted or moved around the schedule!! I really appreciate how much was practical effects and stunt work!! It's true that unless the show was animated, getting Spidey's rogues gallery was going to be a challenge. I think Hammond was not mistaken about a crossover; remember the Hulk TV movies which ran throughout the 80s. Bixby had Daredevil for a potential spinoff, so it's possible Hammond could have returned as Spidey during that time.
Two different scenes from this series always depicted a grounded version of Parker such as lamenting over his broken camera or how how he earnestly pleads to a chopper pilot to take him over the Empire State building while admitting that he has no money to pay for the ride which is a stark contrast to the recent cash grab over bloated mess of turd in which a neutered Spiderpunk tries to be an Ironman knockoff. I was also obsessed with those "elbow patches" on Parker's suit more the the Spidey costume itself.
You’ll find a huge number of TV movies and pilots were regularly repurposed as theatrical films overseas in the 70s and 80s. Take your pick of the 80s action hours, Knight Rider, Airwolf, Buck Rogers, and V just to name a few
Wow. That brought back some memories. I remember watching this on VHS as a young lad in the early 80's. Pretty sure it was how I was introduced to Spider-Man.
This show was my first introduction to Spiderman as a kid and I LOVED IT. You pay good homage to it here. It gave a realism to the character and put him 8n real life situations. The wall climbing stunts were amazing and you wo t see that today. I dont care what Stan Lee says you couldn't have someone swinging through NYC in the 70s and supervillans would have been camp. This was gritty. Loved Robert F Simons J Jonah. Disagree that his character changed, it just added more depth. He was cantankerous but had a heart of gold and he thought Spidey was a menace - not too dissimilar from the comics which I didn't read til later. Also loved Captain (Hannah) Barberra your typical 70s cop. Hammond was a great mature personification of Parker. I used to look forward to it on Friday nights in the early 80s in the UK. Plus the music by Stu Philips and also from the Pilot was so cool and funky.
i loved this show and to those who bag on this "respect the past because it was all that was possible and it laid the ground work for what you have now"
Hammerhead, Tombstone, Wilson Fisk, some characters like Doc Ock I do believe could have been done on a budget in the 70’s and I say that because there are a lot of examples in film that made incredible leaps in film techniques & practical effects from that era. Studio film executives back then were more financially and creatively hesitant, when compared to how producers and showrunnerrs are ballsy enough today. I think the problem was that they lacked a person like Kevin Feige on their creative teams among the studios.
Think you got it backwards. Today studios and execs are far less ballsy and more penny pinching today when it comes to tv then back in the day. Also it's pretty good that they lacked a Kevin Feige because he turned out to be quite the fraud.
Fun fact: David White, who played J. Jonah Jameson in the pilot, was Darrin Stephens' boss, Larry Tate in Bewitched. Robert F. Simon, his replacement in the regular series, played Darrin's dad, Frank Stephens.
I grew up watching this first run and consider it 'my' Spider-man. It and the 60's cartoon, which was syndicated at the time, started my love of the character.
I loved this show. Then again, when your pajamas looked nearly identical to the quality of the costume featured in the television-show, it was pretty easy to actually feel like the hero...
I use to watch this in the morning when I had to stay home by myself. I was 7 and loved it! Get Smart, Wonder Woman, this show, then the dating shows would come on. I dialed so many 900 numbers, I was mentioned on the news! I wanted to be a bartender, and NKOTB to sing to me.
A little late but some villains could have been done such as: Kraven like you mentioned but also his brother Chameleon. Plus Mr. White from the Deadly Dust eps could have been retrofitted to be Silvermane and the Maggia. Maybe even an appearance from The Crime Master…also who wouldn’t have liked to see a 1970’s live action Morbius.
Chip Fields is the mother of Kim Fields (Tootie on Facts of Life and Regin on Living Singles, among other projects) and Alexis Fields (Ken and Kel, Sister, Sister, and Moesha). Chip also played the mother of Janet Jackson's Penny (Good Times TV Show) who beat the daughter, most notably the character burning her daughter with the iron.
I think you could've had some of the crime bosses from the comic book. Wilson Fisk would've been perfect as well as Big Man, The Crimemaster, Silvermane and maybe the Maggia.
This is a great part of my childhood. Reading spider-man comics and watching the only thing available on TV. The Amazing Spider-man tv series. I loved it.
I was in the elementary school when this came out and everyone at school was trying to swing on invisible webs around the playground. When the Incredible Hulk was thrown into the mix, add Steve Austin, and then Empire? Are you kidding? My childhood had the coolest heroes in it.
Had this show on on a couple of vhs tapes as a kid thanks to my grandparents, and read spider-man comics faithfully. Loved it just for the sheer fact the character was in live action (back at a time when it was virtually the only thing we had haha.). Hammond apparently lives out here in Australia, and I recall he sometimes popped up on morning tv programs when spider-man films dropped at the cinema, or sound of music had an anniversary. I too hope one day the full show pops on streaming. Cheers for the nostalgia video!
As a 70s kid, I remember all of those 70s superhero shows and loved them all as a kid. I remember trying to catch Spiderman but yeah they kept moving the air time and back then there was no way to record so you lived and died by TV-Guide. If you missed an episode, you missed an episode.
Ironically, CBS faced being typecasted before this. They were considered the "Rural Sitcom" network in the 1960s with Green Arces, Beverly Hillbillies, Andy Griffith, and Pettycoat Junction.
Uncle Ben being already dead before Peter gets bitten by the spider somewhat ruins the whole origin story since Uncle Ben's death is a big part of how Spider-Man came to understand that with great power comes great responsibility. My guess is the lack of Dead Uncle Ben in 1977 is the reason why they killed him like 8 times in Spider-Man 3 during flashbacks, for the sake of balance.
I watched this version of Spider-man for the first time in the mid 90s, but remember seeing it in video stores before hand. I went into the Raimi movie with low expectations from this, so was blown away!!
NICHOLAS HAMMOND. THE FORGOTTEN SPIDERMAN. It was a crime and a sin for the movie makers behind Spiderman No Way Home to exclude him from their cinematic blockbuster. They could have easily cast him in a short funny cameo role as the elderly boyfriend of Neds grandmother.
It was a honor for this series to be made and it felt like a comic book come to life. Yeah there was no Green Goblin, Doc Ock, Venom etc. but it was a 70s limited budget series.
14:55 He also might have been talking about the death of Bixby's 6 year-old son in 1981... or the suicide of his ex-wife shortly thereafter, which Bixby may have contributed to by openly blaming her for being negligent. Yeah, he had a lot of dark shit going on during those last couple of seasons of The Incredible Hulk.
It affected the show in interesting ways. There's one episode of The Incredible Hulk, "Proof Positive" that has no Bill Bixby, supposedly because of court proceedings with his divorce. The producers made the most of it by doing a story from the point of view of Banner's dogged pursuer, reporter Jack McGee. McGee doesn't know who the Hulk is and Banner, played by stuntmen and doubles, is never clearly seen.
I use to watch this show all the time when I was a kid. I'm constantly looking for the tapes on Ebay, hopefully shout factory will give us a proper disc release. They've already released the 90's Captain America movie, plus the show.. Fingers crossed
Great Video ! Unfortunately, I only ever saw the pilot and The Deadly Dust on VHS in the 90s,since those two were the only ones available to rent in my neck of the woods. So ive never seen the other episodes.
I think they actually could've done a supervillain or two. Like you said, Kraven and Mysterio were easy. And Electro too. You know how many TV shows had at least one scene with electricity being fired? It was doable since the 60's. And the suit (if they woukd've bit the bullet and done wouldve been easy). Doc Ock was doable, but wouldve taken more time and money so very unlikely. But man the 60's and 70's had lots more (now forgotten villains) that we liked back then: Hypno-Hustler, Mindworm, Gibbon, Grizzly, Kangaroo, Morbius, the Marauder and on and on. Heck Kingpin is just a fat bald guy and Crime Master and Boss Man (Big Boss? Big Man?) were just masked "guys" in dress suits and fedoras. But the ones we were expecting most of all were the Enforcers; a big goon in a turtleneck, a short guy in a classy dress suit and hat and a Texan with a lasso? Supervillains AND realistic; best of both worlds.
I gotta say, i love the spider man suit. I really liked the suit from these japanese spiderman show but didnt like the mask, but i think the mask on this suit looks much better but keeps the overall look of the japanese suit, even may be the same.
I did find the show on DVD. Five years ago at San Diego Comic Con, there was a guy that was selling hard to find DVDs of movies and TV shows. Some were on VHS and Some were on DVD. I was able to find a copy of the Amazing Spider-Man. It may have been a bootleg copy, i’m not sure but the quality while viewing it, seemed pretty good and the picture and content on the case, looked professionally done by a company.
I remember vividly someone watching it. It was a scene in which Spiderman climb a skyscraper and shoot his web that looks like rope. I was not sure it's a Spiderman film until now.😂
I have vague memories of this as a kid. It stands out because until superhero movies began to be popular again, this was the only real live action most people would remember. Didn't help that in the UK, I don't remember many reruns or home releases, if any, at the time.
oh man as someone who has acrophobia watching those climbing scenes was terrifying lmfao I never to to see this show sadly in the 90s, but I remember my dad telling me about it because he liked it
O man. These got a cinema release in the U.K. I know, as an ‘ickle ankle biter, i went to watch them in my local flea pit (the Scala, long gone but not forgotten). Even watched one on a Christmas Eve, they held a raffle and I won a (very) small bag of sweets. Happy happy times.
Haha, I do remember missing a lot of episodes because of the time slot changes. Life was full of disappointments like that back then. And when you missed those shows you missed them. You could only pray they might be shown again during Spring re-runs, and that you might catch them then. I do prefer and older Peter Parker. There's only so much adults should be able to relate to our care about "Spider-Man meets Saved By the Bell."
Yes there was three movies made from the 📺 series. First was the plot second was The Deadly Dust and third was The Chinese Wed. He still is the best Spider-Man! I was hoping to see the Sinister Six but that never happened.
I was 17 when the show first aired so I remember it well. And putting Isis into a skimpy white bikini made perfect sense to me. Hard to hide weapons that way. I don't know why more villains didn't do it more often when they captured the heroine. Still waiting for some villains who watched this show thinks it is a good idea and does it too. Some stunts were amazing, some were really cheap but I still liked the show.
Everyone has a favourite Peter Parker. Some people like Andrew Garfield. A lot like Tobey Maguire, while others love Tom Holland. Me, I absolutely think that Nicholas Hammond was and still is the best Peter Parker and Spiderman.
Tom is a great teenage Peter/Spidey, Toby I found dry and lacking the right humor for the character, and Andrew has always been my favorite. He nails the humor and wears the suit better than anyone else, he looks like he jumped right off the page...just wish he had better material to work with, script-wise.
@@Axolotl_Mischief For me Tobey will always be the best while Andrew Garfield did a fine Spider-Man but his movies sucked and his Peter lacked who Peter Parker is. Tom Holland's a pretty good but felt more like Iron Boy than Spider-Man. Nicholas Hammond did well and was like a live action version 1990s animated series Spider-Man whose up there with Tobey's version for me.
Yeah, I remember renting a VHS from an obscure video rental store way back when I was a little kid. I've thought about this show the rest of my life, but never saw it again ANYWHERE
I totally and 100% agree that there should be another chance to a live action Spider-Man show. I am getting a bit over tired and bored with the overuse of CGI from the latest MCU Marvel movies. The Amazing Spider-Man films I feel are underrated and don’t get a lot of appreciation for like the practical web swinging camera shots, to see Peter engineering his web shooters, to the first person POV from Spider-Mans eyes. I really wish those movies had continued and maybe the plot holes from those films would have been fixed. I also feel like Peter Parker’s parents backstory where in turns out they were Shield agents would have eventually been explored. Because there were definite hints to that. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is missing out on a lot of stuff for my own liking. And his CGI suit takes me out of those movies.
Fanboys love to hate on older super hero TV and movies but with the exception of how Hammond's Spider-Man had to remove his mask, the costume was very practical and more close to what a real Spider-Man would look like as opposed to the MCU costumes and the 2012 basketball costume. All of the Spider-Man movie costumes, including Raimi's, look exactly like costumes made by a movie studio with big corporate money behind them. The MCU costumes are made by Stark's people so they don't even represent the mind of Peter Parker. He gets the suits and doesn't even know how they work.

bridge, engineering, ten forward/the bar, medical, hangar, entertainment venues like holodeck, sports arenas, theater etc oh and mess hall and with stations specifically we see parks, promenade's, markets, slums etc so it's never just the same spots
also think man it's a game series, it won't translate to a fun show very well cus of the lack of detecting crimes, gathering clues, interactions with Gordon etc and you have to think, they stretched 1 episode over 12 hours or so of game then roughly 3 episodes over double that for city and the rest.....a lot of the fat would need to be trimmed off and better writing for dialog and character action/interactions, better pacing for a show and proper explanations for what's going on, frankly i never understood what was up in those games and I'm a veteran of the animated series lolz
no, the 1990 animated show totally got batman right and will remain as the best batman ever, the arkham games are okay but not a template for a show, that Assault on Arkham movie was cool though
Hey it works for Superman
Nicholas Hammond deserves, deserves, deserves to get a cameo in the upcoming Spidey flick.
I feel the same. 60s Spidey with the catchy theme, tv Spidey, plus Spidey and his amazing friends. Then the raimi movie .
I'm a grown as man now, and I still love this show.
I loved this show.
Then again, when your pajamas looked nearly identical to the quality of the costume featured in the television-show, it was pretty easy to actually feel like the hero...
I am old enough to remember this premiering on television and I was super excited. I truly loved this show and was sorry it didn't last longer.
I actually saw the TV film as part of a double bill at the cinema. I was young, and had a great time.
I totally forgot about this show, that's when you know your getting old when you forget things that use to exist.
I was amazed as a kid in the 70s seeing Spidey climbing buildings.
This was my introduction to Spiderman and I loved it.
You can change the villains name in “deadly dust” to Silvermane and you would be good
This is a great part of my childhood.
I am shocked. A 1970's villain dressing the heroine in a white bikini? Oh the humanity!
More villains need to do that instead of putting their henchmen in faceless helmets.
i was so shocked i had to pause the video to take a breather.
Nicholas Hammond is also who the 1994 animated series version of Peter Parker is based on.
Dude your recaps are spot on. Keep it up.
Barely remember watching this on tv. They would air Wonder Woman and Hulk more.
I just said that. It was a block of them when I watched. I can't believe I'm so old.
In my are, they didn’t even air the Doctor Strange pilot! Luckily, I was able to get a fairly decent signal out of Chicago.
As a 70s kid, I remember all of those 70s superhero shows and loved them all as a kid. I remember trying to catch Spiderman but yeah they kept moving the air time and back then there was no way to record so you lived and died by TV-Guide. If you missed an episode, you missed an episode.
I remember watching this series as a kid, and loved it.
Thanks for the video and keep up the good work!
Thank you
To Nicholas Hammond:
The first actor to play Spider-Man
Before Tobey Maguire
Before Andrew Garfield
And before tom Holland
Ironically, CBS faced being typecasted before this. They were considered the "Rural Sitcom" network in the 1960s with Green Arces, Beverly Hillbillies, Andy Griffith, and Pettycoat Junction.
As a kid I loved this show. As an adult I want it on Blue-Ray and have been yearning for it for years. It needs to be released.
Well, for now UA-cam'll hafta do, I guess : ua-cam.com/play/PL790D2B5404DBE6B2.html
I remember this show I was really young but I remember it. I also remember the animated TV show was Spider-Man, Fire Girl and Iceman.
Spiider-Man and his Amazing Friends which is on Disney+ at the moment.
Firestar
@@shanehickenbottom3708 Okay
I have a bootleg bluray that looks decent enough, but imagine a fully remastered official HD release on bluray?
Yeah I talk about that in the Incredible Hulk episode of Gone But Not Forgotten. You can find it on the playlist of the UA-cam page
That was my absolute Fav when I was a kid!! And ferignos Hulk was up there too but I still love those seasons. And the suit looked great 👍👍👍
Let’s not forget it influenced the 90s Fox Kids cartoon. Peter had Nicholas Hammond’s face!
Recently purchased this series on DVD, copied from VHS but still fun to watch
Loved Nicholas Hammond SpiderMan and the Japanese SpiderMan as a kid. I wish Nicholas Hammond returned in SpiderMan no way home as his SpiderMan
I gotta say, i love the spider man suit. I really liked the suit from these japanese spiderman show but didnt like the mask, but i think the mask on this suit looks much better but keeps the overall look of the japanese suit, even may be the same.
My brother and I loved this growing up. We wanted the metallic webshooters and the belt. This show was great to 7 year old me.
Me and my dad use to watch this ALL the TIME...LOVED THIS!
Please do a Gone but not Forgotten on Tales of the Gold Monkey. That show needs more love attention
Oh Yeah! I almost forgot about that show until you mentioned it. The pilot movie was great. The show's quality slipped pretty fast though.
Was that the show with Stephen Collins on ABC set in the 1930s?
@@cityhawk Yep
I would also vote for "Bring 'Em Back Alive" with Bruce Boxleitner.
I actually like the belt and how big the webshooter cartridges on his wrist are.
Me too! I tried to make my own out of mat h boxes.
Didn't help that in the UK, I don't remember many reruns or home releases, if any, at the time.
oh man
as someone who has acrophobia watching those climbing scenes was terrifying lmfao
I never to to see this show sadly in the 90s, but I remember my dad telling me about it because he liked it
I loved this show when I was a kid
This show was so hard to find on TV as a kid. Just be flipping the channels and BOOM 💥 THERE IT IS.
To be fair sweaters were made a lot better in the 70s, so I wouldn’t put it past them to block radiation.
I was thirteen years old when this was on TV, loved it, I never missed an episode!
Nicholas Hammond The amazing spider-man in 1977 needs to be in the english subtitles in the dvd and the bluray.
I remember watching reruns of this on the Sci fi channel when I was a kid, always waiting for Doc Ock to eventually show up 🤣🤣🤣
"Is he strong?"
"LISTEN BUD!" (said through clenched teeth while angrily shaking finger)
Haha, I do remember missing a lot of episodes because of the time slot changes. Life was full of disappointments like that back then. And when you missed those shows you missed them. You could only pray they might be shown again during Spring re-runs, and that you might catch them then.
I do prefer and older Peter Parker. There's only so much adults should be able to relate to our care about "Spider-Man meets Saved By the Bell."
I agree. I liked that about Raimi's movies too starting with Spider-Man 2 where Peter is in college and had his own apartment like in the 70s series.
some of the episodes aired in the UK, and i remember watching this and loving it. never seen Spiderman before, so this was my entry point into Marvel
Yes there was three movies made from the 📺 series. First was the plot second was The Deadly Dust and third was The Chinese Wed. He still is the best Spider-Man! I was hoping to see the Sinister Six but that never happened.
Absolutely loved this show. Great video thanks 😊
Loved this when I was a kid!
I used to love this as a kid, I seem to remember a Ironman version from the same time period.
Everyone has a favourite Peter Parker. Some people like Andrew Garfield. A lot like Tobey Maguire, while others love Tom Holland. Me, I absolutely think that Nicholas Hammond was and still is the best Peter Parker and Spiderman.
Agreed!
I've like all of them to be truthful. Though Toby's emo dancing was hard to take but that's more the script than his acting.
That theme music really boogies though.
Yeah, I remember renting a VHS from an obscure video rental store way back when I was a little kid. I've thought about this show the rest of my life, but never saw it again ANYWHERE
I watched this in the early 80s when I was a little kid and absolutely loved it. I still remember the theme song 😂
Me too.
Nicholas Hammond should make an appearance in Spiderman : No Way Home. He is the OG !
And Japanese Spider-Man
Hee heh heh, he said "butt phuck NO!" at @10:14 LOL
