This week’s video is about my time in Freiburg, Germany. All in all, I had a good time. I learned quite a bit about myself and different cultures around the world. I went to Germany primarily to improve my German and do research for a year. I ended up conducting research in a university hospital among doctors and grad students. Everyday I shadowed the doctors as they went on rounds and as they had their meetings. Those meetings truly accelerated my understanding of German, and I’m very thankful for them. I had to adjust to working in a professional setting as opposed to a university setting, and it wasn’t my cup of tea to say the least. I really came to appreciate the expressive freedom that being in a university setting offers students and professors alike. Working in a hospital required me to be a bit more put together and muted. I struggled a lot with it at first, but I eventually got over it.
Outside of work, living in Germany was bittersweet. I dealt with people staring at me every day, regardless of what I was wearing or how I looked overall. I felt like an alien at times, or like I was unwanted and unwelcome. Even at work, I dealt with some implicit biases on behalf of my coworkers, and that became too much to handle. On the other hand, when I was able to interact with students and colleagues outside of work, things seemed ok. I had plenty of great times with students from various walks of life and I made strong bonds with people. I wanted to share my experience of living in Germany as a testament to the fact that travelling abroad is not always fun and glamorous, especially if you’re Black, and/or some other visible and despised minority group. Regardless of who you are, your experience may not be trash, but it may not be roses either. I hope that me sharing my experience has helped you brace yourself for life outside America, or to become a better ally to minority students.

@@MDPhDandMe it was very enjoyable. The research was interesting, and I traveled a lot. My boss was high-key racist AND problematic though; so his energy was very draining and had me in a depressed slump for most of the experience. I managed to have a great time with the other Fulbrighters all around Spain though. It was a transformative, life-changing exposure to Europe.

I've experienced this type of discrimination during my PhD experience as well. There's even a white gaze and colorism in Asia of all places.

Where did you do your PhD, and where were you in Asia? I'm not at all surprised that you experienced colorism in Asia. They are probably the largest consumers of skin bleaching products in all the world, lol.

@@MDPhDandMe I'm actually traveling to Korea and Japan in September for 2 weeks! I'll update you on that. I'm a PhD student at Johns Hopkins. I study cancer immunology; and I'm planning on applying to medical schools in 2021.

Whoops! Honestly, you may go and not have a negative experience at all. Alternatively, you may go and have a much worse experience than I did. To be forewarned is to be forearmed, but I would encourage you to travel with an open-mind. Interact with everyone you meet, both at home and abroad, with an open-mind. If and when you find that certain people consistently treat you a certain way, then take note of that and protect yourself. Otherwise, I don't think you need to be scared. Life is an adventure, for better or for worse!
Also, who's traveling anywhere right now? 👀 *strong side eye* 👀😂 Just kidding. I'm just mad because I was forced to sign a contract that bans me from traveling "until further notice."
