The most notable Criterion OOP title was Grand Illusion. Not only was it spine #1, but it's also an all-time classic film. When it went OOP, Criterion said point blank, "This is the last chance you'll ever see spine #1 in the collection again."
So jealous of The Leopard digipack! I have the clear case release but those editions look so beautiful. I'm reading the book and then watching the movie.
That's a great idea! I heard from another commenter that the movie is really dense and can be hard to follow without reading the book. Hope you enjoy them both!
Make Way For Tomorrow is incredible! I can’t recommend that film highly enough. It’s really beautiful and it’ll make you think about the people you love and the trajectory of your own life. So great! Fantastic haul and video! New subscriber here.
Great video....good to know some of the titles that were released in that form. I really like the digipak versions compared to the standard ones. I wish the digipaks would still have the pocket for the booklet for it to be more secure instead of falling out. I'm always on the lookout for digipaks for a decent price.
Agreed. The booklet pocket is a really nice little feature. Makes the digipak a bit thicker, but I think it's worth the extra space it takes up on the shelf.
the leopard, although historically and politically complicated is a film that has really left an impression on me. its super long- but the performances and grand nature of the film make it incredibly entertaining and amazing to look at! good movie to watch as a matinee
I have The Third Man and Ace in The Hole but under different labels. My copy of Third Man came from Studio Canal's Vintage Classics Line. They put out a cool 4 disc release of The Man Who Fell To Earth for the 40th anniversary which I missed out on. It had the film on Blu Ray/DVD, a bonus features disc and a CD of the films soundtrack. The version they’ve put out after the 40th omits the soundtrack CD but keeps all the main bonus features. I’ve seen the second version around so I might get that. Studio Canal also recently did Blu Ray/4K releases of Richard Lester’s 3 Musketeers films that were put out under the Vintage line. I might get those eventually but I’m not sure yet. We’ll see. My copy of Ace In The Hole comes from Eureka’s Masters of Cinema line. I got that, Lady From Shanghai and Double Indemnity all from this line last year. I would like to get Night Of The Hunter eventually. I think we did get the Criterion version over here. I just don't have it personally yet.
I usually have to ship my blu-rays from abroad, so I much more prefer jewel cases, cause digipacks are always bent or smashed in transit. I do have some Criterion digipacks, but honestly, I love their cases so much, and how it all looks neatly on the shelf. I think the lack of the wasteful bar wit "blu-ray" logo on top is the cherry that sells me on their cases.
I'm totally with you there. Buying Digipaks and Box sets online is always a struggle. And I agree that Criterion (Flicker Alley, WCL, etc.) has the best jewel cases. They look really nice on the shelf without a slipcover or anything.
I wrote down "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" thanks to your recommendation! Woah. Congrats on the pick ups. Alfred Hitchcock is my favorite director but I never saw "Foreign Correspondent" so I am taking your crown, for I am King Uncultured Swine! mwhahahaa Given what I read about "Salo", I just shined my crown before putting it on. haha Hope your summer is going well, DJ! Thanks again!
@@FilmsByColor Thanks! Looking forward to hearing you on the Geekvolution stream as always. And as usual, I might be there right before the stream starts and then have to go. haha Always great hearing you, Cap, and all guests sharing their insight when I return!
I already had them on blu but my local indie record store had Third Man(dvd), Harold and Maude(blu) & Rosemary's Baby(blu) for $10, $15 & $15 so I had to grab them. Also, apparently, Benjamin Button is now OOP.
$15 for the Paramount Blus?! That’s a crazy deal. I found Harold and Maude at my Half Price Books, but I had to pay $50 for it. They also have a couple copies of Benjamin Button, but I’m holding out until I find a copy with the slipcover.
@@David-uc6sg Oh I know. I was just referring to Harold and Maude and Rosemary’s Baby, because the Criterions went out of print when Paramount took the rights back. Sorry, didn’t mean to be confusing.
I actually have sunrise the original 20th Century Fox Blu-ray release oop now . best picture Oscar for the first year the Oscars came out along with wings, but just recently the Academy decided to take it away from that movie which is unfair.
Pasolini was assassinated for making SALO, a deeply political film (very anti-fascist) that has to be as extreme and gross as possible (think THE COOK, THE THIEF, THE WIFE & HER LOVER) to make its points. You should see it at least once, but brace yourself. Ultimately, it is worth it and as a serious film person, you need to see it once.
Wow, JD! You're really getting these amazing films and great deals lately. All part of the joy of collecting physical media. I love packaging, even when it goes against my OCD tendencies. The oversize packaging, the extra books, screenplays, etc. everything that makes a release not your typical standard release. OCD be damned! As you already know, THE 400 BLOWS is an amazing film. I have 5 different editions of this film from Criterion alone, including the Adventures Of Antoine Doinel Box Set. SALO is amazing, not everyone cup of tea. I suggest reading some background on the film beforehand to understand Pasolini's intentions. I don't think you are the type of person that would judge the film solely based upon its controversial subject matter and scenes without understanding the overall picture. It may be hard to stomach, but it enriches the brain and enrages the spirit. TOKYO STORY is a very moving film along with MAKE WAY FOR TOMORROW. Good idea to do a double feature. THE LEOPARD is one film that requires rewatching several times. After my first experience watching this film in the theater, I had to read the novel in order to understand the history and politics within the film, being half-Italian and a history buff I had to know more. It's a sumptuous film, but dense and difficult to follow for without that historical background. ACE IN THE HOLE is a brilliant Wilder film, which upon release was derided by critics and audiences, I'm glad that Criterion released the film and like A FACE IN THE CROWD gives films a chance to be reevaluated. NIGHT OF THE HUNTER was one of those really great films that has been reevaluated to greatness, as it should. As good as Laughton is as an actor, he is a top tier director, too. Too bad, this film was derided so badly that Laughton could not continue directing films because he was so hurt by the initial negative reception. Good things happen to those who wait, FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT is a very good Hitchcock, exciting film and beautifully done by Criterion. SUNRISE is one of the best silent films ever made (Top 3 for me). I had seen this in the theater and again it was an amazing experience to see on the big screen.
Yeah I really lucked out on this haul. Thanks as always for your incredibly insightful comment. I feel like I learn something new every time I read one of your comments. Hopefully I'll be as knowledgeable as you on this stuff someday if I keep up my required viewing.
This channel is such a great watch to unwind before bed!! A favourite for sure
Thanks man! Really appreciate the kind words 🙏
Interestingly, I didn't know some of those digipak releases had standard case releases. It's neat to learn about this kind of stuff!

Ace In The Hole is great and yes, you'll understand the poster and picture from the cover once you've watched it!

I found them on Facebook from a seller who posted them in the Home Video Boutique group.

What’s the deal with all these dvd videos where the guy hasn’t watched any of them
sodom? disgusting crime agianst humanity
Good thing then that Salò is an examination of a bunch of crimes against humanity. A cinematic endurance test of increasingly depraved proportions.
