Roo brings back 16-Bit Gems in style with the finale of the 4-part Dragon Quest retrospective! After looking at the history of RPGs, the Super Nintendo remakes of DQ 1&2, and the modern classic of Dragon Quest VIII, he brings things back to the most popular entry in the series - Dragon Quest III. Find out why this game was so popular across the Pacific, and how even this 15+ year remake makes it accessible to modern audiences. - Розваги
Here in 2024. The HD2D remake was released today. Still a great video. Miss this channel so much.
Also, it was so crazy seeing you on Jeopardy this week, Roo. Congratulations.
The GBC version was what got me into Dragon Quest, and it remains one of my favorite JRPGs.
Joey, please never make us wait this long for a 16 bit gems again!
2019!
I miss this Channel
2021 friend
The fact that you can make a 10 minute video feel like half an hour's worth of material and be able to present it in an appealing and informative package is the reason I love this series. Good job as always, and I can't wait to see the next one!
It is sad that Dragon Quest doesn't get the love and attention in the States as it does in Japan. I wish that Dragon Quest Collection came out here as well. Either way, great look back at this classic RPG! :)
Yeah and we at Mexico have it worse...
Good news, it came out on Switch.
That's entirely Nintendo's fault.
They chose to localize the archaic first game in 1989 when they could have just localized 3 and had a game more than worthy of competing with Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star.
This almost feels nostalgic. It's been so long.
Yes one of my favorite youtubers. He really has a sense for quality by getting into the little details.
I can't simply describe in words how amazing this review is! I'm 15 years old and I'm also "RPG'd out." I remember 2 years ago, when I started playing J-RPG's, and I found this game series - my imagination was taken very far and I was surprised that the games are underrated. Hopefully someday the series becomes well-known in America. Also, another underrated game series to review on the SNES I think would be Fire Emblem because those games are just as overlooked as Dragon Quest and Earth Bound.
Words don't even begin to express how much I adore Dragon Quest III, so this video means a LOT to me.
Roo, seriously, this is such a fantastic series! Please make more videos! Thanks!
I really hope that he continues 16 bit gems or maybe something like it. I really enjoy his videos and he has quite the talent for it
I enjoyed this JRPG/DQ retrospective a lot. Good work.
Thank you Roo for finally completing the last episode of 16-bit gems. I actually liked the Game Boy Color version of Dragon Warrior III.
subscribed SO long ago because of these. good to see one come out!
Glad to see you back. As the games you review, truly underappreciated.
Really like this! Thanks for coming back! Hopefully 4 will be out soon!
Oh man been waiting for this forever! Thanks Roo, I love your videos, they're so informative.
ClanofTheGrayWolf is like another user: Rebeltaxi. They both take FOREVER yet their videos are timeless as they provide us with such a rich and flavorful incite on their respective topics. Pretty much a bad review will always be bad but a delayed review will eventually be good.
Is this a promotion?
I'm kidding of course:)
lol I'm just a big fan of both...
I remember this comment back from when this video first came out thanks for making me a rebeltaxi fan haha
You say what my entire life of experience tells me to be true. great choices of DQ games to review as well. all favorite games of mine and my favorite of all time DQ8
Super glad your show is back!!! Been waiting a long time for its return :) great!!!
Finally I can live on with my life again :D Thank you!!! You're the best on the whole tube with these type of videos!!!
I've waiting so long for this, I might watch it a few times to hold me over for the next video.
Been waiting a while for this one, awesome video Roo! Looking forward to seeing more 16-bit Gems.
I'm glad you got back to 16-bit gems!
the opening with the eight melodies sends shivers down my spine. I love earthbound.
So glad these are back
To see a new cotgw video on my UA-cam page... I thought this day would never come!
o my god roo!!! thank you for doing another 16 bit gems i have been waiting for this episode
BACK WITH A VENGEANCE!
Glad to have you back.
the hype for this episode was incredible
Good to see you back, Roo!
Bring it on, is all I've gotta say! We're blessed to see a new 16-Bit Gems and I'm not letting ANYTHING spoil it!
Where'd ya go, Roo? I miss these.
Roo, in an internet full of Call of Duty trash-talk videos and poor taste "fail" compilations, you bring a wisdom and air of class that is unsurpassed!!! Keep 'em comin'!
Good to have you back.
Baramos is one hell of a villain! In the new DQ11 for the Switch, there's actually an optional 2D area where you get to fight him once again, and he is BY FAR the hardest fight in the entire game imo. It was literally the only fight that gave me any challenge in this game, including the Post Game boss. As I fought him semi early and was playing the game blind, it was a complete shock when I first fought him and I admittedly did Game Over my very first time as I didn't see it coming. It was the one and only time I ever Game Overed in Dragon Quest 11. That fight is no joke tho. It was also by far the most fun fight of the entire game as well. It was an absolute blast! I also loved how you had to traverse an EXACT copy of his dungeon from Dragon Quest 3 to get to him. It's literally you playing through the final dungeon of DQ3 in DQ11. It's fantastic!
Oh yeah, not to mention the Switch version has an ALL NEW arrangement of the Baramos fight theme, and it's the best version I've heard of it thus far! I really, REALLY wish I could find that version somewhere online, but I haven't seen anyone upload it as of yet!
Glad to see you back!!
Never realized there was a 16bit version of this. Looks pretty damn good, I'll have to check it out. Thanks Joey.
Love this series, glad it's back.
It's very interesting how Square Enix has gone about with XI tying it into III (very much a Final Destination 5 situation) and now we're getting that remake with Octopath's engine.
It's almost like they were setting up a revisit to this game, or in some of cases a first exposure.
This game looks and sounds gorgeous and fun, and I think I should have it in my collection someday.
I don't care that the video is nearly a year old, G+ gives updates on comments! Thank you for the heads-up on the translation, Roo. I remember Nintendo Power showing info on the GBC remake and thinking it looked awesome, but I never had the chance to get it. Well, now I know what I've been missing. Started playing at 11PM and by the time I finally checked the time, it was 4AM.
I just beat this on the Nintendo Switch!! I loved it!!!!!!!!! I did not want it to end! I beat it with a lineup of Hero, Soldier, Sage, and Pilgrim. My hero was at lvl 57, And the rest of the crew was at lvl 50-53. My soldier was blasting out 400 plus damage and my hero right under up in the 390's when they were buffed with the damage spell. Man what a great time!
Good to see this series back :)
wow this was my favorite game on gameboy color.(still is).. when i was younger but I never knew it was this popular....I was hooked when I played it...I remember i had to use a flashlight at night because I couldn't see the tiny screen in the dark...great game...still is and I still have it....I played it again about 3 months ago....a lot to do..great bosses...cool story, and a lot of funny moments....its always something new because it had a nice amount of classes etc
Do... do my eyes deceive me? Is that a new episode of 16-bit gems? No, it couldn't be, it must be a mirage. I've been trying to survive this Gem drought for long enough. But wait! Could this be real? Yes! The next coming of the holy one has come! Roo is here!
Good to see you back, Roo! Great episode too!
The people have spoken Roo!! WE LOVE 16 Bit Gems!
I definitely overlooked this game the first time I played it; I even thought that it was a ripoff of Pokemon. But after learning more about the franchise and playing DQ 3 once again--it has become one of my most favorite games ^_^.
E3 this week = Pretty cool
New consoles = Pretty fucking cool
New 16-Bit Gems? FUCKING AMAZING
Great video! nice to have you back on my "what to watch" page Roo :-)
6:11 too primitive of graphics to recommend? The graphics were GREAT, especially for the GBC. And they still had the surprisingly smooth combat animations from the SNES port to boot! The game was HUGE too, especially for a GBC title with tons to do besides explore the world.
We need a 3DS port, like with all the features of the GBC version but with higher quality 3DS graphics and music.
@@atmosrex7126 there was one, but only in Japan
well we got the Switch version
@@GiordanDiodato which is just the mobile port, which is the SNES version but stripped down(no combat animations, no animated into, etc.) It's probably the worst version of the game save the original American NES port.
@@otakon17 but it has all the content from the GBC version
plus... you don't have to incinerate your wallet for it (it's like $15)
I finally get it! the series wasn't cancelled and things didn't get in the way! It just ACTUALLY took him six months to produce. I forgive him now
it took me seven years to finish this game on my gbc , because at the time i was 10 yo, i did not know english, it was my first rpg, so when i won i was already a teenager i did know english, it was a fucking epic day
My all time favorite game
Dude, I love your videos Roo.
Finally 16-bit gems is back!
Great job, thank you very much. I can't wait to see the next one.
Man I really need to play the Snes version of DQ3 sigh one day. Anyway it's great to see your back Roo I look forward to your next video :)
Just finished DQ3 and can't wait for DQ11 to come out! Will be MIA for a few months once that one drops.
awesome review as always roo ^_^ its good to see you back
DQ/DW III is truly an underrated RPG stateside.
I really enjoyed playing the mobile versions of 1-3 on my Switch. They greatly increase the playability and menu management.I know some don't like them, but I'm fond of the drawn monsters as well. The game ended up blowing my mind, as this was my first playthrough of the series (I'm on 5 atm) and I wasn't using guides so the specifics of the surprise at the end blew my mind, and I didn't expect to see Alfheim. The class system is also my favorite way of management characters as well - I hope some of the later ones pick up on this.
"Maybe I'll do a game that won't take six months to do an episode on"... Doesn't make a video for six months and counting :D
maybe you should try looking at his video list again, larry. he's made 5 videos in the last 5 months, one just 4 days ago (1 day before you posted yours)
Riftweaver1981
He hasn't made any new full 16 Bit Gems episodes
TheJester
Thank you, at least someone understood what I was referring to.
Larry Bundy Jr We miss you Roo. Bring the Wolf BACK :-) Take care.
I am wainting for a new episode. After six years I believe
Love this episode, Roo, and I love the tired look, but the lack of a wedding ring makes me sad.
I finally have the reproduction cart for this game :D
About time. Totally worth it. But please don't make us wait that long again
Roo! we need a new video, we miss you pal!
Damn! Roo you got me with that cliffhanger! If all I watch are Echo Streams from now until the time Wii U Smash Bros. comes out, and that cliffhanger is still there, then I think I'm required to challenge you to one online battle! ;]
FINALLY another 16 bit gems :) i kove this series.
Welcome back 16-bit Gems
Awesome episode!!
The GBC version of this game was the first pure JRPG I ever played. And when I was a kid I couldn't work that version of the game out.
Roo was the best youtuber
Finally! A new episode!
I do believe this is your best video.
X has the mainstream appeal, one of the reasons we don't think it's that great is because it's so linear and simple, but that is the reason casuals can pick it up and play it.
You also have to remember how impressive the graphics were at the time, that alone reserves a nostalgia plot in people's hearts. It's part of the reason FF VII is my favorite video game.
That's awesome. And now that you have one you can start collecting all the other fantastic RPGs for GBA. There are a lot of them.
I totally bought the remakes on the SNES just so I can play the fan translations. Great series!
I love this series. I know nothing at all about games, but my boyfriend does--and it's damn fun learning :)
This is now available on iOS :)
I played 3 on the GBC and while I really liked it, I'm someone that prefers RPGs to really motivate me to push through countless hours of grinding and random battles with a really good story. 3's story isn't very deep at all, though not as paper thin as the first two so it took me a good while to beat it playing it off and on. But it's a definitely a good game, I wouldn't play it anywhere other than the GBC just to be able to play it on the bus or something.
It's an amazing epic adventure. One of the best SNES rpgs.
Awesome review Roo!
Thanks Roo!
This game is my second favorite game behind DQ8.
I never knew this was remade for the GBC. Killer info.
Starts up with waking scene, then talk to the king, then he gives you some cash to go on a journey? Some things never change.
Well worth the wait great video
I'm watching you on jeopardy right now!
Great Dragon Quest III retrospective. I've been playing the Dragon Quest 3r Super Famicon translation. It really is great. It's easier than the original, but not as easy as the GBC games were.
Yeah your back i love you roo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest 3 is a really good game to start with if you want to try to get into the series. The Dragon Quest series is like the Final Fantasy series.....except reversed. Dragon Quest has Happy Atmosphere, Enjoyable characters, and is not always serious. Not always serious meaning thousands upon thousands of puns. Puns in Enemy Names, Items, Characters saying them, and even the Town Names.
R.I.P. 16 bit Gems
I loved Akira Toryama's art style for this game.
Roo's back!
6 years ago... Jeez.
Still waiting for that good ol' fashioned platformer...
Any day now 🥲
There's de iOS/android version now too, pretty good on my opinion, with improved music quality... although there are no battle animations. In any case, grinding is less of an issue when you are playing in a bus on your way to school, for instance, and it's a relatively unexpensive game. It's a great way to experience a classic for the new generations :)
***** Mobile is our future, according to most game publishers nowadays.
***** I still would recommend the mobile versions. The new localizations retain the Old English language while updating it to be more faithful to the originals, and though the game can only be played in portrait, it actually makes it very easy to play one-handed. The controls take some getting used to, but considering it's a turn-based JRPG it's really not that bad.
Not only that, but I would say buy them to show Square that there IS a market for these games in the west, and to show them we care about Dragon Quest. I'd still LOVE for these updated versions to be released on other platforms, but for that to happen we need to show that Dragon Quest is wanted.
I think I might prefer the lack of animations for this. It makes the battles go by so much faster.
great video, your enthusiasm reminds me of alton brown but in the video game world lol
