  • M1 finance is a brokerage that is different from most other brokerages out there. I would not recommend using M1 if you plan to actively trade in and out of stocks and ETFs. M1 is ideal for those looking to automate their investing by dollar cost averaging in commission free fractional shares. M1 is the ultimate set it and forget it brokerage account for your average person looking to invest long term.

This used to bug me too, but at some point I figured I am putting money in every Monday, the sticks get bought Monday morning. These are not the companies I am trading, so it does not really matter. Those assets are in different accounts with different brokers.

I have my taxable dividend portfolio with m1 and my Roth with vanguard. Vanguard has amazing customer service And have been updating their app recently and the UX is getting better and better. would you recommend staying with vanguard or moving my Roth over to m1. I really love the pie charts and ability get precise allocations of my positions, however with vanguard it’s also nice to simply DCA into the money market account until I have enough to buy a whole share

Jacob- how is the customer service with M1 finance ?!
Every time I call Fidelity - I”m speaking with a kid that doesn’t know the answer to my questions !!
Everyone on UA-cam discussing stock, ETFs and financial planning are using M1 finance
    Thank you 🙏

I have had bad experience. I tried open one couple years ago. Recently tried again to open a retirement. They asked for statements etc. Sent. Called them. They acted silly on the phone. But said would be transferred in few days. Next got a email reasking. Tried recall and said reply to messages. Never was able to although others may have better luck
I gave up again. So sticking to ib. But wanted a specific retirement. But whatever.

I recently emailed m1 to remove security lending. I saw on this year's tax forms substitute payments from lending and they are taxed differently than qualified. That isn't good so opt out of that as soon as possible to save money on taxes.

Jake, I’m assuming you being barista retired, you’re doing weekly - monthly withdrawals. Are you paying 100 for their withdrawal fee, is this true, they charge 100 for withdrawal? Seems a little much, how is this better than just making a regular withdrawal from the other bigger financial institutions? Thanks!

I like to see other investors spreadsheets and how they keep track of their investments. I always look for interesting things to track.
I can say doing research like on Seeking Alpha and keeping up with analytics with spreadsheets can be a full time job. I know some days I have to put it away. I just have to know I have good investments and have to have faith in them.
I’m not part of M1 but it does look neat from what you have shown. Maybe one day someday. Thanks as always for you videos and insight.

I don't like micro building positions so M1 doesn't really suit my building style. But i see the appeal. You're basically laying out your own etf and M1 does the balancing.
When it comes to brokerages and the safety of your assets, i think it's important to remember that if you're a shareholder, you're in the books as an owner of that company. So as long as you're not doing anything sketchy with your shares, it doesn't matter particularly which brokerage you use. The record of your ownership exist outside of the brokerage. It will just be hella annoying to deal with getting your assets on a new platform

I will say, since the M1 HYSA announcement, there have been 2 rate hikes. Other banks I've seen are at 4.1% now. Hopefully M1 increases too, otherwise I imagine most of us will keep our emergency money in the current accounts.
