As a "Deadhead", Jerry's tune was clipped picking, IMO. I followed the Dead for many years. Been to the New Years Bash in Oakland several years. Watched Mr Nash come out on a Float full of roses... Wandered/Floated around the rotunda many times! ;-)...Those were a few things I can remember...
I think one thing that made Jerry great was, while soloing he could maintain an ongoing melodic sensibility while simultaneously stepping back and leaving space for the sound of everybody else to thunder through. He'd actually listen, with an artist's ear, to whatever sounds the band produced, then play his next phrase in response to what he had heard. (Not necessarily in terms of specific note choices but more in terms of friendly acknowledgement)

They were in his garage and I don't remember if he had left the garage door open or if it was a forced entry, but somebody had stolen them. You could hear the disappointment. They meant a lot to him in kind of a tangible connection way.
at 1:36 when Annie busts in with that husky backing vocal you realize her & Sammy are creating *instant magic* with this song and then Jerry turns up the popcorn to *popping fresh* ha ha! I just love his style, damn we miss him so much!

Cool jam but let’s not get crazy he played a strat for years and this is a strat neck on a jaguar or jazz fender with six strings in standard tuning. Nothing unfamiliar and he dedicated parts of his life and style to 12 bar blues so this is right n his wheelhouse .I love Jerry as much as the next guy but it’s not like he’s playing a harp or cutting up turntables out of nowhere lol

The thing to remember was that the original Sweetwater where this took place held at most 150 if packed in like sardine! I was lucky enough to see a couple of these Christmas parties put on by Village Music Record Store...also saw The Roger Rabbit Stealth Band (Phil & Friends with Bob Weir.)

I loved the Sweetwater & Village music record shop. It was best record shop on the planet! In the 90's i used to go in every few Sundays and buy Van Halen magazines. Sammy Hagar came in one Sunday while i was diggin through magazines & i missed him, The owner told me Sammy was just in when i came to the front. I was like oh man!!! The owner of the shop did give me some cool stuff signed by Sammy since he knew i was a huge fan. Awesome videos! Thanks 4 posting!

Costello, he didnt like it, he put it down, then he took Burton's instrument and he find the the stirings were as thin as "spider web" (garcia words!) so he took again Costello guitar and played with that; at last he said somethin like "I'll never go to a jam without carrin' my own guitar".

You are correct. Jerry asked if it was strung with spiderwebs. Jerry played heavy gauge strings (11’s and even 12’s). I think Costello said this guitar had 9’s.
Yup. I remember Jerry saying the strings went "spack." (Although he might have been talking about James Burton's guitar.) He also admitted to being a bit thrown by Elvis not having fret markers.

I'd just been reading about this very moment yesterday. Some blog, book, or website. Van Halen was my first concert. Grateful Dead being the last for a decade or so after 95. Lots of Max Creek in between VH & GD.
This was two years after Jerry suffered a stroke and had to relearn how to play. Look how happy he is! Way more happy than he was with The Dead after this. He should have just kept on jammin and not tourin!
If he stopped touring that would mean no dead shows after 86. No JFK 87. No Hampton 89. No Without a Net. No Wake up to find out from the coliseum in 1990. So many crucial shows wouldn’t exist today had he stopped touring after his coma
@@zeussierraalex I was at most of the shows you just mentioned & toured pretty much non-stop from 89 to 94 & loved every minute of it. Changed my life & made me who i am & was the best time in my life. I'd still trade it all if it meant he had lived a longer life or even just a happier last few years. even without all the great shows you mentioned, he still had a couple decades worth of amazing music that i could listen to for a lifetime.

You are correct. Jerry asked if it was strung with spiderwebs. Jerry played heavy gauge strings (11’s and even 12’s). I think Costello said this guitar had 9’s.
Yup. I remember Jerry saying the strings went "spack." (Although he might have been talking about James Burton's guitar.) He also admitted to being a bit thrown by Elvis not having fret markers.

I'd just been reading about this very moment yesterday. Some blog, book, or website. Van Halen was my first concert. Grateful Dead being the last for a decade or so after 95. Lots of Max Creek in between VH & GD.

This was two years after Jerry suffered a stroke and had to relearn how to play. Look how happy he is! Way more happy than he was with The Dead after this. He should have just kept on jammin and not tourin!

If he stopped touring that would mean no dead shows after 86. No JFK 87. No Hampton 89. No Without a Net. No Wake up to find out from the coliseum in 1990. So many crucial shows wouldn’t exist today had he stopped touring after his coma
@@zeussierraalex I was at most of the shows you just mentioned & toured pretty much non-stop from 89 to 94 & loved every minute of it. Changed my life & made me who i am & was the best time in my life.
I'd still trade it all if it meant he had lived a longer life or even just a happier last few years. even without all the great shows you mentioned, he still had a couple decades worth of amazing music that i could listen to for a lifetime.
He looked happy in 89 for sure!

In 1989 I saw Van Halen in one concert and the Greatful Dead in another. Neither one sounded close to as tight as this. WOW.

Grateful: The Sweetwater was known for people showing up to play at other folks gigs. Thats was a great venue. Hopefully they'll get the new one built in Mill Valley soon.
