  • One of the best ports of the classic coin-op shooter from 1980. Interesting thing about this Sega version is that it does not use any hardware sprites: all the objects, shots and particles including star field are "software rendered" into one single tiles layer except for the mountains that use the second layer. This is extremely rare for this kind of game on this console. Also the sound is generated using the DAC - there is no use of the PSG or FM channels. The game is part of the great retro-compilation cartridge: "Arcade's Greatest Hits". Please note that the game is optimized for 60 Hz and runs slower than intended on PAL systems.

This isn't a port it's the digital eclipse emulation of the arcade game Cheers

I doubt it is just emulation. There may be parts that are emulation but the coin-op machine was very different from Sega Genesis. For example the mountains in the Sega version are handled via independent scrolling layer - not possible on the original hardware.

Well I had Williams Arcades greatest hits on the Playstation One years ago which was made by Digital Eclipse It had Defender, Defender 2, Robotron, Joust, Bubbles and Sinistar When each game loaded up you had starting emulator message then the Williams carpet screen just like the arcade in the game you could enter the service menu just like the arcade and change the dip switch settings view bookkeeping information etc I thought the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo versions although scaled back in terms of menu presentation and videro interviews with the game designers etc were using the same emulator although I haven't played either version so can't comment further although on the Playstation version you had an insert coin button to load credits up I notice it's different here as it just got 1 player start 2 player start so maybe you are on to something
