This last year was my first year to grow peppers and I started them indoors under a grow light and I used a heating pad. The only lost like 3 out of 20. I also kept them next to a small electric heater and they did very well. I love to watch these videos over again to refresh my mind on your growing tips. You and Cindi are awesome!

use watering can that sprinkles the water. if the water comes out in one heavy stream it makes holes in the soil and disturbs the roots especially for young plants.

Another great video. I plant peppers in pairs. By planting in pairs, they grow thicker and you don’t have to top off because they naturally have more support. Plus, it provides more shade for the peppers that grow.

I garden in tropical Puerto Rico year round and I enjoy your segments very much--learn from them. I ignore the last frost dates, of course, and plant any time I want to. I was pleased to hear you say that pepper plants should be planted at soil level. I have heard so many contradictory statements and was glad you cleared it up! The balanced fertilizer advice was welcome, too. Keep up the great work!

Ah, I've been worried about my peppers looking a lighter green in my raised beds compared to my very dark green hot peppers in containers, seems that's ok. This is my first year growing them and they are putting out a lot of fruit so I was thinking they were stressed. Also I've noticed that as the temp has been steadily warmer the tops are greening up a bit more! Thanks again for all your videos they help out so much!

I planted my peppers from seeds indoors in Late Feb ( Im zone 4 WI). The absolute best luck Ive had with getting healthy pepper seedlings is to broadcast seed them in a little plastic grocery store mushroom pack with lights just above the plants. From there they all get planted 2 to a white 5 gallon bucket. This way I can move them where the sun is late season after some other crops have been pulled. I have less disease and much more fruit this way. I always have better luck crowding them a tad. We have sandy soil which over the past 3 years of working it is getting better but needs a bit more amending. Clean forested wood chips worked awesome but aren’t always readily available. I will certainly heed your advice on the watering and type of fertilizer. That explained one issue I have. Good tips as always!

I'm surprised how many seeds come in his packets for .99 about 50. What's more ironic is the other UA-camrs seed shops inflate their prices like calikim and rusted garden. So I think I'll use migardener from this time forward.

I started growing my peppers from storebought peppers that i first enjoyed like 3 years ago. been growing and harvesting them since, and at the end of each season i save the seeds from 2-3 peppers for the next spring. i mean, for peppers it's fairly easy to get started for pretty much nothing i guess, as long as you have a healthy garden already.

@@renookami4651 That is fine if all you want to grow are the varieties found in the supermarkets but if you want to experience the variety and taste of some of the other varieties you need to purchase seeds, if only for the first time you grow them. Heirloom varieties will grow true to type from saved seeds but Hybrids will not reproduce true to type and need to be repurchased whenever you run out.

    • @metaphoricdirigible1499
      @metaphoricdirigible1499 4 роки тому +1

Ren Ookami That only works for heirloom varieties while most store bought ones are hybrids. But if you know the pepper is not a hybrid, that works. You can buy seeds once and then grow a plant and save the seeds and never have to buy that variety again.

Taking note as I watch your video.
    I'm having pepper problems:
    1. Bought young plants in small pots which looked healthy and about the size of the ones you're planting in this video.
    2. I'm in North Florida, soil temperature is fine as early as late February
    3. Transplanted them into the ground 7-weeks ago, second half of March.
    4. Soil has been amended with compost & garden soil
    5. Too late for this year, realized I should've added Coco Coir or the like, perhaps too dense? Without amendments, the native soil is pure sand.
    6. The plants get full sun most off the day (hmmm, a problem?)
7, The plants aren't crowded, I spaced them out at least 18-24".
    8. I don't know the soil pH (my bad), but it's probably slightly alkaline. My Better Boy tomatoes in the same plot are doing well.
    9. I planted them at the level of the soil in the pots as purchased, no deeper
    10. I have a long growing season, and when the plants still looked healthy, I did prune them.
    11. I have used a balanced fertilizer several times since planting 7-weeks ago.
    12. It's been pretty dry, aside from a couple good drenchings, we've gone weeks without rain. And, I've watered at least once a week in those stretches, sometimes a couple times.
In the same plot, I've got sunflowers, tomatoes, sugar snap peas, lilliput cantaloupes, radishes, squash, cucumbers, and watermelon. Everything except the peppers appear to be doing well, especially the tomatoes, sunflowers and peas.
But, the peppers are struggling. I've noticed dropped leaves, and even a few dropped immature peppers. Trying to figure out what the problem is. Almost ready to pull them and use the space for something else.

I live in the south east so our summers are very hot and humid and typically I need to water at least every other day what I’ve learned is peppers don’t like that much watering at least in my bed they do much better when I can dry them out to point of almost dry soil around them but I struggle since my beds are mixed and no other plants like getting that dry ... just my 2 cents from what I see in my garden moving soon and I think I’ll put them in smart pot bags or a less irrigated bed

I have a couple of pepper plants that were initially a bit leggy, I planted them a bit deeper to stabilize the plant (about an inch is enough if it is a seedling) along with staking so the plant doesn't snap from a strong wind.
The ones that are still maturing as plants, are overall healthy (a couple of them are a bit overwatered, so I have that issue on some).
I've planted some close together and still gotten flowers and fruit, but because of the lack insects to successfully pollinate the flowers (or even lack of wind), I don't always get a successful pollination by hand.
And because of watering issues (bad habit), buds are dropping either before or after flowering

Even if the stem does create more roots, the plant needs room to expand at the base. The soil, or even the secondary roots that may occur, can choke the base of the plant, much like a tree being buried too deep, it chokes itself with a secondary root system.

I heard that you can bury them deeper but I didn't dare because I always heard that you bury it up to where it had been buried so I didn't know what to do. I just got 3 new peppers. Red peppers,Cubanelle peppers and Chilli peppers. Peppers are great. Great video.

I’m a chronic over waterer! I also set my peppers out too early. Dang. I’ve got some stunted peppers. Well, there’s always next year. Great tips!

Mine are stunted too. We are having unusually cooler weather than normal so I blame the weather for stunted plants.

I grow my peppers by the compost pile they seem to like it there. I dug a hole at the pile and it was super dense with roots

Great intel. Finally getting to bingeWatch ur channel. I live in Orlando and we get a ton of sunlight. I use vegetable scraps from cooking as compost for my garden. Do I still need to treat my soil to prevent hot spots by the roots. Also how often should I blend eggshells with water mix and add to soil

I'd love to see you do a video on the pros/cons, or circumstances under which you recommend topping peppers. I don't see this in any of your MI Gardener videos.

How easy it can get. Zone 9B has an advantage, tropical and perennial. Year two is awesome, limit full sun like you said, epic yields. I get a high germination rate and can wait a year. Epson salts and teas with bloom booster jam peppers into boughs that yield highly with hidden peppers that make me remember why I talk to them every day . YEARS OF HARD TRIMMING and heavy mulch have high yields past 6 years. Growing friends say Azomite and Epson Salts keep away the pepper weevils, don't know but plants they came top me for are over 6 years old. hedges on the southeast side of the house . Be blessed with the right conditions and magic happens. Peace.

Just started watching, so maybe you've already started doing this. I think it'd be really neat to see some of those experiments (like how you experimented with having the stem higher or lower in the soil in this one) covered as separate videos.
Watching your videos is a legitimate learning experience. Thanks!

I started my peppers indoors in Feb/Mar but I think next year I'll start them in January. I'm growing them in my greenhouse. I hope it doesn't get too hot/too much sun in there for them. I did prune some of them before planting them in but probably will not prune any more. They are just starting to flower but haven't set any fruit yet. I guess we'll see how it goes.

Gapeys Grub I, too, started my peppers in February, indoors in my south facing windows. Pruned them twice while indoors. They are now planted outside in my zone 5 garden. So far they are healthy and stocky plants. Several peppers on the plants and lots of flowers. I am having trouble with a tiny red bug. New leaves distorted and tiny brown blotches on the leaves, some holes. I am squishing the bugs and spraying the plants with soapy water. Seems to have helped, it has been a week and no more damage YET. :0) Wish me luck on a good harvest.

LARK'S GARDENS Good luck! I used grow lights with mine. Mine are doing well but could be doing better. They don't grow as fast as tomatoes so wouldn't take up too much room if I started them earlier. Good luck with your harvest! :)
