    That's a nice amplifier, old school quality, I bet that wasn't cheap in it's day.

    The tube amps have a unique sound which I would class as warm; "Happy New Year Dave".

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 роки тому +1

      They do. That's why serious music people use them. The people that hang on specs will point out that they have higher distortion which is correct but it is even order harmonics which to the ear is not perceived as distortion. Even order harmonic produces a second order harmonic which is one octave higher than the original sound. We're listening to music produced by instruments it makes the instrument sound bigger Fuller and this is precisely why musicians use tube based amplifiers for the guitars for example. A solid state app like my technics suv9 has immeasurable distortion, 0.003%. it sounds great but it also sounds sterile. Solo State apps do provide very clean unaltered sound which technically is the best but unfortunately the ear doesn't appreciate this, the ear likes the warm sound that only vacuum tubes can produce and this is one reason that most really high-end amps will put a couple of tubes in the preamp stage to warm up they're very sterile sounding solid state apps and make them sound more like a tube app and why many people will spend big bucks and buy a tube buffer and run their sound through a tube buffer as it puts those even order harmonics back in the signal.

      @@12voltvids I have the JVC A-X77 which is roughly contemporary with the Sony and your Technics SUV-9. The JVC is the first, and only, solid state amp that I've heard that is as warm and rich as a single ended tube amp, while still maintaining the clean sound of solid state. I didn't think it was possible but they really worked some magic on this one

    The older Sony ES range was made to a high standard, and at least it was servicable.
    Having owned a few over the years, they gave a superior performance compared to
    the mass market models.
    The dreaded pcb eating glue was used by a lot of manufactuers, it might have kept
    components and wires in place, but as it ages it does a lot of damage.
    Hope you have a better time in 2022 Dave.

Awesome audio player and build quality with Nichicon fine gold electrolytics throughout. Had the Sony Service center, Phototronics, here in Seattle replace the optical transport about 10 years ago, so should be good to go for a quite a few more years. Am I the only one or does it seem like the trace that got eaten away was leading into nowhere? It looked like it lead to a jumper wire on the other side that was not fitted. The trace came from the capacitor. It seems like it was omitted and that wire was run over to there instead. Really odd. Maybe the current capability of the jumper was deemed to be insufficient after the fact so they bodged it?

  • @danmackintosh6325

    That thing with your soldering iron, I've had similar issues with that style of iron when the element gets a bit older and the thermocouple connection goes flaky. Basically if the TC opens while the iron is on it still displays the set temperature but doesn't send power to the element. If you do end up getting a replacement element/iron I've found some times the thermocouple is wired in backwards too, so it just sits there powering the element and thinking it's getting colder and colder. Switch the wires round & it works fine again.

    You talked earlier about a telephone repair. This reminded me of the back story of the current used to ring these phones. Are you ready? The voltages is 90. The frequency is 30 cycles per second. The Bell back story is the Mr. Bell figured out that most people could only crank out 30 cycles when wanting to call some one else. Where would you find that if not at the phone company?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  2 роки тому

      There were multiple ring frequencies used in party line days. 10, 20. 30. 40. 50 and 60hz and then you had tip - ground and ring - ground ringers. So 12 people could share the same tip - ring pair. The value of the capacitor and the resonent frequency of the bell determined if it would strike or not. Here the ring vintage is 120ac on top of the 52 volt loop battery voltage.

    • @12voltvids

      I wouldn't spend 70 hours on anything. That's 2 weeks full time job. Not really interested in doing full recap jobs no matter how much i was offered. Been there done that and the guy whined and complained that i broke his amp. Was not happy with the sound. Said the new caps sounded like shit. Wanted all the old ones put back in. Didn't use the brand of caps he wanted. I said well if there was a special brand he should have supplied them. I can only put in what I can source. Never again. I trouble shoot the parts that are bad and change them.
      The problem is all modern caps, every last one of them is going to sound different than caps made 40 years ago. They are made of different materials and the electrolytic is different chemically. This will change the sound and once someone is used to the sound of the old ones the new ones can have such a dramatic effect that many do not like the new sound.

      Las one I did was 300 plus parts and all I got was whining and complaining that it didn't sound right. Sounded fine to me. Was back and forth about 5 times with it untill finally the shop owner told him not to come back again. This was back when i was still in the business. And yes it will sound closer to how it sounded when new, but here is the thing, people get accustomed to that vintage sound. They can buy a new amp and get the new amp sound. All of a sudden their old amp that they love the sound of sounds very much like the new amp they didn't like. Thing is caps that were made 40 years ago had a totally different sound. Put all new ones in and you get closer to the sound of a modern day amp. Don't get me wrong if someone brought me an amp and threw a bunch of cash on the table and said recap it I would change every last cap in the unit and set it up but i would forwarn them that it is going to sound totally different from what they are used to.
