It's amazing, how one resistor could disable a fine piece of audio equipment. You probably saved this one from the landfill!
I enjoy your approach to troubleshooting, thanks for the video! A quick story, while I was a senior tech in the nineties, a trainee I was assisting spent a whole morning troubleshooting an op amp circuit. He had a problem with his circuit with reversed polarity, I glanced down, and noticed he had his meter leads reversed..........We all have done it...........

Always check HEAT of boards and components. FLIR type imager is essential! I have had many, many components cooking themselves to death, but DMM shows correct voltages , Kill-a-Watt shows normal power draw (with in specs) and fuses totally unaffected.

Good to see step by step process of fault finding. Sometimes when a schematic is not easy to get and one channel appears working we used it as a reference point.
    Good video all the same

Great repair video Joe. Marantz made good quality, reasonably priced gear back in the day. The serviceability is also excellent. They only sell high-end gear today.

Beautiful electronics those marantz. I'm still using today (year 2024) my model 1072 in complete original parts but fuses, replaced with the same values and gimbals in place of the steel strip of the input selector. Great amplifier! ❤ Personally, i would have also replaced the other resistor (to have optimal symmetry). In any case, great work!

Thanks for the video I like watching you trouble shoot. I've just started into repairing and refurbishing my own stereo equipment so It would be extremely helpful to me if you would show how you hook up your test equipment when your running your tests and checks. I've already recapped my amp and receiver.
    Thanks

@@VintageAudioFever Hello Joe, over the past year I've dipped into the vintage stereo addiction. I purchased a Kenwood KR 7400 and used it for a couple of months before I was deployed and had to be away from the states while my belongings sat all summers long in an un-air conditioned apartment for about three months here in steamy Florida. When I returned, I noticed there is some scratchiness as I adjust the volume up and down - it's only merely a nuisance, but I feel as though it's not transmitting the same volume power to the speakers as it was before. Is this something I'm merely imagining, or is this something that happens in conjunction with the scratchy controls? Thanks.

Great video Joe! I'm new at this hobby. Learned alot from your trouble shooting skills. Just curious what caps you used to replace the orange caps. I think they were Elna caps. Been to Audiokarma many times learning from everyone there and there are so many different opinios on what to use for cap replacements for the orange caps. Would love to know what you use. Thanks again !!

Nice video! What's the difference in sound after replacing defective caps like that? I understand that for this specific case with bad issues you cannot compare the sound before and after, but what's your general experience? For information: I own two 1072s that sound quite muffled, significant loss of treble frequencies.

    • @VintageAudioFever
      @VintageAudioFever  8 місяців тому

      Hey!!
Losing some sound as your mention...capacitors would be the first thing I would check and in your scenario your treble/bass are on your preamp section, so their is a good chance, you have dryed up/ leaky capacitors. let us know your finding could be interesting...
      thanks for your input...

Nice ! I think the defining moment for that 470Ω was when you measured one way it was open then measured the other way and got junk what you saw there was the diode in parallel with it ! so off with its head.....cheers.

Hey Joe, good stuff! I’m a newby for the most part. I just found you and subscribed. I’ve been watching the other hood channels for a while now but this is the first time you popped up. Do you have experience with car amps? I guess amps are amps for the most part. It’s a JL Audio 6 channel class AB I believe. It has a KIA494AF. I replaced a few IRF540’s but both channels have a buzz. I’m trying to find it with the scope. My question is should both rails have equal or at least close to equal voltages? Maybe a stupid question but this is only my 5th repair and I don’t have the others anymore for reference. I have +20.80 and -15.90. Thanks in advance if you answer and I’m gonna go back and check out the rest of your videos. Nobody does 90’s amps that I can find anyway

... and once they fail, they go out in style, loss of capacitance, esr in tens of ohms and leaking like a colander.

Even without the schematics you can troubleshoot, just check all Vbe of all transistors, with good transistor u should get 0.5v to 0.7v, now check all outputs transistors emitter resistor voltage you should get all the same with left channel. Now you may use also your oscilloscope, inject 1khz to the amp input, then check any sinewave distortion on every base of each transistor, you may start at power amp input transistor. 😀
