  • Do nothing. Stay and fight. Or leave. Those are the choices the women of an isolated religious community grapple with as they work to reconcile a brutal reality with their faith. Women Talking is a film by Sarah Polley that stars Claire Foy, Rooney Mara, Jessie Buckley, Frances McDormand, Judith Ivey, Sheila McCarthy, and Ben Wishaw. Should this dialog-driven movie that's inspired by true events be on your watchlist? Thanks for checking out my Women Talking Movie Review!

    For those who are interested, the substance that was sprayed on the son of one of the women to force him to go with her was a tranquilizer used on cows and also use on the women who were raped.

    I LOVE Women Talking and I feel awful that it's so consistently snubbed by headline awards.

      Well good thing that the Oscars gave the movie two nominations which is top prize nomination. Sad that none of the actors were acknowledge :(

    I used to be a Mamet fan, but the past few years I have been really disappointed in how he's reacted to issues such as the #MeToo movement, diversity in theatre, and female artists. Some of my current favorite playwrights who are superb at writing dialogue include Paula Vogel, Lynn Nottage, and Lauren Gunderson. I encourage you to check them out. :)

      I wasn't aware of Mamet's views... that is very disappointing. I'll take a look at Vogel, Nottage, and Gunderson - I'm not familiar with them at all. Thanks!!!

    Great review! You should rank the best picture nominees once they are announced. It would be cool to hear your impressions on some of the movies!

    Glad you finally got to see this movie. You should give a disclaimer this movie is not going to be for everyone -it is literally just women talking...hahaha... This is the anti-Michael Bay movie... hahaha...
    I did not like it as much as you, but I did appreciate the fact this movie was even produced -in our modern age of blockbuster movie and big CG action and explosions; this is a very different movie.
    Even for a talking movie, a lot of things are very subtle - the problems the women are facing (the flashbacks don't really show much) and the relationship between Rooney Mara and Ben Whishaw's characters.
    I think this is a great movie to see with friends and/or family and go out to eat and discuss about the issues brought up by the movie. And this is still very relevant even in modern day with what is happening in Afghanistan - where girls are not allowed to go to school beyond primary school - like the women in this movie.

    I like dialogue driven movies... I wish there were more of them... I don't know why dialogue driven movies get such a bum rep.

      I think some people have just been burned by dialogue heavy movies written by people who dont know how to write dialogue... also a lot of people simply dont have the attention span for these movies even when done right. I adore them when done good! Bonus points if it only has one setting and feels like a play. But again those one setting feels like a play movies also have a bad rap lol

      Less talking the better

    • @robertnegron6804
      @robertnegron6804 Рік тому

      @@DR.DisInfect not really, well, it depends on what kind of movie it is...if it's some kind nonsensical shoot em up movie, than yeah, but it's it a psychological thriller than the more talking the better. Not everybody can follow what is happening in movie unless there's more dialogue.

    I have been searching for a woman critic's review of "Let them all talk".
    Irony this is closest I've found.
    Oscar winning actors about a woman author .
    Surprise the young all male, mostly white boys reviewing movie found it slow and boring.
    Perfect description, but not for the film.
    I know nothing to do with this young man...just frustrated!

    The *one* that comes to mind is 'Seven Years in Tibet!' First time watch - a "legendary explorer" in a place like Tibet! Closest to this premise of this 'cult' doing something forbidden, talking out their 'options' in a barn! :D

    • @zingara76
      @zingara76 Рік тому +2

      I grew up in a Mennonite community and no we’re not as strict as the Amish.
      In fact our community is very much as normal as other communities. Maybe 60 years ago back when my grandmother was younger, but currently our community is very open.
      There’s 3 different type of communities in our community. There’s the old style community where they don’t use any technology, but that’s pretty much inside their houses. Then there’s the middle, who still dress like this, but do have technology and then there’s the modern ones. The modern ones dress normal and have all types of technology. For example I’m a modern Mennonite.
      But some of my family members are old style, but nothing out of control.

    A bunch of made up fantasy horseshit.
    The story is Men are bad women are victimized but women triumph over the evil men in the story.
    Then at the end of the movie you have to apologize to your wife or girlfriend because we are all evil, and women are all good.

      The women ultimately agree at one point that the men in the colony are victims as well and may eventually be forgiven and that the men as individuals have varying degrees of culpability. They even discuss the possibility that the accused are not truly guilty at all. Your take away is disingenuous and myopic.
