My grandad and his brothers were real cockneys from the east end. Jesus, they were hard men. Hard to get your head around it today but these were gigantic men who actually enjoyed beating the crap out of each other - without gloves or tape either. Theyd just step out of the pub, take their jackets and ties off and it’d be on. No hard feelings afterwards.
I was born in the west end. In brentford (back when it was industrial). When i was a kid just being around my grandad and his brothers used to terrify me. Partly because they probably all - in hindsight - had ptsd from their service in ww1 and ww2 and they had a bad combination of insane tempers and hair triggers. The weird bit was they were always really funny when they weren’t fricking scary.
I was told that the kray twins once brought a truck load of swiped fashion clothes onto our street to sell and my grandad and his closest older brother (uncle sam) went down to tell them to go away - and they did. In that case my grandad knew charlie kray, so i dont know if that had something to do with it. My grandad was a drinking buddy of Tommy Cooper and Eric Sykes, too, which i still find bizarre.

I’m from the east end and so is all my family. My dads nickname was Johnny 9 toes and everyone wasn’t sure what he did, their first guess was gangster or copper lol he was in the rag trade 😂 my aunty dated one of the Richardson brothers who were a lot more violent than the krays! They didn’t give a fuck who got in the way, at least the Krays would try not to hurt anyone innocent if possible lol

Alan Ford was a main character in Snatch, if you've seen that. He was the gangster boss 'Bricktop', who had problems fed to the pigs.
Alan Ford also has a tiny part in An American Werewolf in London, he's a cab driver near the end of the movie.. talking to the David (the werewolf) about the bloody murders that had taken place the previous night.

The writer is Armando Ianucci, who is responsible for "The Thick of It", a fab half hour series of "behind the scenes politics" in a sitcom. Fab characters, including one who could run rings round "Alan Ford" called "Malcolm Tucker", (Peter Capaldi/Dr who), who plays a policital "spin doctor". It;s filmed is a slightly "Peep Show" style.
Of more interest, might be the special Film length episode "In the Loop" which is the same characters as that politicial sitcom, but they've flown to Washington....... the British Humour/US politics mix up you didn't know you wanted til now!
You will probably love it, but do also check out the half hour series too.

Like a broken record this is from the The Armando Iannucci Shows, he's the guy who owned the washing machine, I'd say one of the least known or appreciated comedy giants of the last 30 years, he's had his fingers in so many pies, especially as a writer, producer and director, very highly respected in the industry amongst his peers, he's co-writer and creator of I'm Alan Partridge and directed the second series.

I used to enjoy visiting family back in the day, going Chris street, Roman road , getting pie n mash and a bag of sweets for 10p lol. Those days are long gone now. Those were the good days, now it’s jut shit everywhere. My dad used to have a different story for me every time I asked why he was called Johnny 9 toes, one minute he’d say a tiger bit it off when he was at the zoo and the next minute it came off because his mum chopped it off lol, when in fact it was due to a chimney breast falling on his foot when he was 3 and playing outside!
