Al Murray is a very clever guy from a "well to do" army officer's family. He went to a smart boarding school, which he loathed. The character he plays as the pub landlord is far different from the way he talks and acts in reality. He has a Masters Degree in History from Oxford University and an amazing knowledge of geography and general knowledge. Brilliant man.
He's a tosser - and, worst of all, an unfunny one. Having a degree doesn't make him less so. And no, I couldn't give a damn about any insult thrown at me. Murray is still a tosser.
The entire world already knows. You see there's this thing called "The Internet" and on it there's this thing called "The UA-cam comments section" where everybody knows everything, yet there's always (somehow) somebody who thinks history is something that only started when THEY noticed it.
I have a long time female friend whose family name is Muff. We've been to see Al Murray live many times, especially at the recordings of his sitcom series Time Gentlemen Please, and he's taken the piss out of her name on stage numerous times, particularly as he started to recognise us. When Time Gentlemen Please ended, we were fortunate enough to be invited to the wrap party thanks to Al. When the party was over and the guests and cast started to leave, Al and some helpers were giving out commemorative pint and wine glass sets with the show name printed on them. I still have my set.
I learned that there's a place by that name just outside Londonderry, not far from the coast, I know this because a workmate went to a wedding there (40 + years ago) and as the night wore on he was asking about divers in the area.
@@bobgoodall1603 We have a place near me called Wankdorf that I also find hilarious. Dorf means village. When we mover here I saw it and told my wife we can never live there.
@@bobgoodall1603 there is a teacher at my girlfriend’s kid’s school and when he told us her name I was 100% certain he’d misheard so asked him again “are you sure that’s her name” he looked at me all serious and I didn’t want to make a big deal of it as I’d draw attention to how funny it is! 😂😂😂 Her name is Miss Clittso 😂😂😂
As soon as I heard "Shazza!" I knew she was one of us. His Melbourne knowledge is pretty good. It's probably spelled "Myf" which is short for Myfanwy and is of Welsh origin.
There was a Little Britain character called Myfanwy and yes he was (pretending to be) Welsh. I'll take a guess that it's most popular in NSW. Although that's probably too obvious. EDIT: 'she', obviously *
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe was one of the platforms that gave Al his initial big success as The Pub Landlord. As I recall, his first year here, he played in a pretty small venue. Word of mouth led to him doing really well though, and by the next time he came, he was much bigger box office. It's Festival time again here in Edinburgh, through August. City is mobbed, and a new generation of artists are stepping onto the boards..
Al Murray certainly knows how to work the audience, it is just a character he plays, he actually has a masters degree in history from Oxford University, he's also multi lingual - I think he's fluent in French, Spanish, German and also speaks Japanese and Chinese. He's a very intelligent man, he doesn't seem to have much of a script at his stand up shows, he mainly just bounces off the audience, but he has to remember a lot of people and they're jobs!
5:30 - Al's comment is because Sharon and Tracey were the names of the two lead characters in a British sitcom ("Birds of a Feather"). The thing I like about Al Murray is that his schtick is to be like a typical pub landlord but he has so much knowledge of the world in his head (his knowledge of British history, for instance, and here, of Australian geography).
Try and find clip of the beginning of one of his shows. This is when he picks on the front row. Saw him live once on second row. Small theatre so started in second row. Stopped about two people before me. PHEW!!!!!!
I think he started as the pub landlord in a TV programme called, ¨Time Gentlemen Please¨, around 2000. But has had a varied time, as stand up comic, historian, & lots more.
He started at Edinburgh in the early 90’s, I saw him many times from the mid 90’s to the late 2000’s, plus was in the audience for a recording of a series one episode of Time Gentlemen Please. From upstairs in pub function rooms to large venues. The podcast with his friend and renowned WW2 historian James Holland is excellent, last year Murray published his first serious book, Command, to critical acclaim from established historians.
I had an abdominal surgery, afterwards my testicles swelled up to the size of two Jaffa oranges 🍊🍊 and were so painful I couldn't stand the pain. That was a month ago, and the swelling has gone down, but I can't get them comfortable.
Take a look at Al when he goes through in reverse order every UK PM and slaughters them based on their records - a tour de force of comedy and very clever.
Nowadays if you show you're patriotic & wave the flag you can get arrested for offending someone.Anyway this is my Al Murray comeback.Me:What is your profession? I'm a web designer! Me: So, you're basically a giant f***ing spider.
I am going to see Al In my local theatre in April when he does his next tour. It should be good as the dearest tickets are at the front in what he is calling the splash zone. Part of the price is a free poncho.
His knowledge of the second world war is unbelieveable. He's published one book called "Command" and has a second one due out later this year on Arnhem. He also co-hosts a podcast called "We Have Ways of Making You Talk"

Really hope you and queen boomer get a chance to see Al, I've been to every tour with my Dad. They're always a good laugh and every gig is different because of his audience interaction, which he's certainly focused a lot more on in his current tour. Hopefully some new videos will appear soon. In the mean time I'd highly recommend watching "why bacon proves the existence of God" [Edit: just found you have done this one but it wasn't in the Al Murray playlist] Also it's not widely known on UA-cam, but he did a show called multiple personality disorder which is a series of shorts with different characters.
