- Read the full review: andauth.co/Flas... | FlashRouters specializes in providing popular wireless routers with replacement, open-source firmware (like DD-WRT) and configuring them as VPN routers. This allows you to install a permanent VPN connection in our home or office where every device connected to the router is automatically using a secure VPN connection out to the internet.

I love this channel. Gary is amazingly informative. Thank you Gary
I will no longer say Tomato TomAto. I will say Router Rooter.
Thanks Gary, this was great!
Another informative video. Thanks for the info, Gary!

@@GaryExplains GARY!
MARK!
I only clicked on this to hear Gary say "Rooter".
Yeh...but he says it proper!", not like the Americans who call it as a woodworking cutting tool!
@@iankipling5904 but, it's properly indicative of something that pulls up roots? 🤔😆
Rooting traffic with a rootah. Americans routinely flip "en route" (root) like Gary but we also say "en route" (rowt) ... I think rootah sounds more entertaining though. Maybe do a video about American/Brit/Aussie pronunciations and have fun with it.
Gary, you're the best. Best regards to your team.
Best tech explanations I've come across on the net! Thanks Gary!
If you have terminal access of the router then you can write a script to autoconnect to the VPN server when connection drops.
how do you setup a flashrouter if you have a combo modem/router???
Love the presentation! That router has withstood the test of time (over 20 years), for many of those still on a 'G" connection. Hopefully this one is just as rock solid, better than the $99.99 or less AC & N offerings.👍
BTW, how does one get on a list to try out new hardware?👌
Excellent explanation of basic VPN's.
I have a Linksys wrt32x, and had issues with the wireless. I ended up putting the stock software back on the router and the issue was nearly fixed. Then I got longer and stronger antennas and aimed them properly and now I have hardly and drop spots in the house. I might go back to ddwrt next month to see if it's better.
Never tried a VPN.
Who is FlashRouters and why should we trust the software they install on the router we purchase? To be clear, the same issue exists with Linksys, Netgear, etc. , but with larger vendors with long track records, there is a sort of herd immunity in place and with an open source router, one can more finely control the software that is installed. Any thoughts?
in this case you have to trust dd-wrt code is clean then FlashRouter for not bugging in any way to capture data nuggets.
I'd rather have my ISP spy on my traffic DNS than any unknown VPN overseas... it's like a honeypot trap for geeks 👍🏻
dd-wrt and Tomato (better) both use a vanilla wifi so forget about stable wifi.
Do your research... instead of an expensive latest wifi hardware, buy a used Dual-core Router box and connect a unaltered wifi AP to it else you'll have PITA.
An now you could explain how to flash dd-wrt on this (or similar) router and how to configure it ourselves manualy without needing third party services. .... that way this video would look less like an advertisement. Tnx
😀 yes those are useful, makes it alot easier for everyone to use a vpn
I didn't appreciate being pointed at by the routers antenna, Gary.
I expected a quality Gary Sim flesh and bone point.
I expected more from you, how disappointing.
🤣
Gary loved this video. I have a vpn but I’m not allowed to install it on my ISP’s router. I’m considering purchasing a FR and connecting it not only to the Internet (fibre) but also to my ISP router via an Ethernet cable thereby getting round my ISP restriction. I only really want to connect my IPTV box to the FR, all my other devices have a vpn installed on them, iPhone, laptop, iPad etc. Therefore I don’t have an issue using my ISP’S router. Does this sound feasible and which FR would you suggest? Thanks and keep up the good work.
Can the router also increase internet speed compared to a WiFi connection
Root that traffic with a Rootah! Great video and entertaining!
king crab fishing 🤣🤣🤣
Good information.Thank you.
What about the router you get from you wifi network were does this fit in and is there a way to just make that completely safe? I am very tech illiterate so I'm sure thats obvious but if you coment please use layman terms so I can understand 😉 thankyou
Does is allow me to connect to my own self hosted ikev2 VPN server?
*PTSD of internet dropping every few hours and having to reboot my router to regain access to my 1mbps internet*
Rooter????? Rewta???? Rahwter!! Take a shot everytime he says ROOTER.
I'm just funin with ya. Good video. Thanks for making it.
Thank you gary
Gary I have a simple question, if I just need an Access Point for my Android TVs to use VPN isn't this an overkill?
Please make comparison video on snapdragon x50 vs snapdragon x55 modem chips for Android. And please predict what components will be used in upcoming Samsung note 10 exynos version. I am from India and considering buying myself a note 10.
How do I leave one port of the router open for local VoIP phone service? Is this possible in this configuration or do I have to do the old fashioned install of VPN on every PC?
Hi Gary, already a ExpressVPN user, do these Flashrouters work with BT Hub 2 Super Fibre modems? Dave UK
Great video
Can I route my Android TV through these Routers to connect to, say, streaming services in a different country
There's a sex toy called a Squirmy Rooter.
Can you just download the flash router software? I already dd-wrt but like the lay out the flash router.
Hai Garry pls do a video between SD 675 and SD 710 which is powerful interm of CPU , GPU , and Ai because I am confuse arghhhh pls do a video TQ Gary
thanks Gary
Just fyi, I purchased a Linksys WRt3200 form Flashrouters. Did not work out of the box. Poor customer service.
If anyone had experiences with this, would I rather go with something like a Synology router or this?
Main difference, of course, is that Synology has it's own proprietary OS and software, so it's not open source like DD-WRT or Tomato, so not only it's more under control of Synology, I'd imagine it'd be less transparent and all.
On the other hand, Synology routers are super configurable, it'd match well with my Synology NAS, and I'm more familiar with the interface. And I think Synology routers are very VPN friendly too, so there's that.
Just out of curiosity because right now I can't afford any of this. xD I'm currently using a GL.iNet travel router as my home WiFi hotspot... it doesn't have any of the fancy tech, but works well, and most of my home stuff is wired, so it's mostly for mobile stuff. Setup isn't as intuitive, but with some configuration you can go Tor with a physical switch.
Express VPN is expensive but I find that I get very close to my ISPs advertised speed. They have their own firmware and FlashRouters can set it up for you. You can also set it up yourself if you can do it and you already have a capable router.
If you use their customized DD-WRT firmware, you can go into the setup and choose to leave a device outside of the VPN. Amazon Prime generally won't work with a VPN, so I leave an older Apple TV out for Amazon. Apparently they do have a server that works for Amazon and one for access to US Netflix from outside the country but I haven't tested them. Support will help you with those. They're pretty good.
Yeah same problem for me ...cant get to work prime video and hotstar on vpn....
Interesting!
Some VPN providers offer multiple protocols. Can you those these on this router?
Yes, the routers support OpenVPN, L2TP, & PPTP, but you may need to specifically ask for that support when you buy. More details at andauth.co/VPNRouter
thank for the video, what you have not explained is that when you activate VPN you cannot access anymore certain sites, like banks and other as, I assume, they cannot see who you are or something like that. Anytime I need to access my bank accounts I need to disactivate my VPN...
Hmm, that is unusual, I only access my bank via a VPN!
@@GaryExplains I will keep checking maybe I can figure out more details, thanks
@@GaryExplains I double checked, it is 100% sure, certain institutions (especially banks) do not support VPN, here an article: www.seattletimes.com/business/technology/why-do-some-banks-not-allow-me-to-log-on-through-a-secure-vpn/
@@CarloBiondolillo OK, but it is only certain institutions. As I said, I have never had a problem.
@@GaryExplains Same for me. I know this is 2 years late, but I use NordVPN, and if I go to Bank of America's website, it simply won't connect until I disconnect from the VPN.
*insert crab rave song*
nice video
i wonder, which phone will get this award first
Ha, only 10MB network share transfer?
Gigabit gives you 100MB so not a fast cpu so VPN max speed should also be limited.
There is no such thing as a kill switch here. You simply define the vpn as the only route available...
Take a shot every time he says rooter.
I know what a Router is, but what in sams green hell is a ROOTER??
It is the British English way of pronouncing router, as in routine and roulette. 🤦♂️
RAUWTER NOT ROOTER!!
LOL, no. How do you pronounce roulette and routine?
So many rioters....I mean rooters
Rooter 😂😂😂😂
eh?
Great video but the pronunciation of router kills me lol. Cultural differences and all.
Yeah, I understand because the US pronunciation really grates on me! 🤪
Lol. I love your videos. Keep up the good work sir. Maybe a video on a Tor router or a similar obfuscation service could be a good topic.
