“I will not use glitches”

They said wouldn't use glitches to skips gyms since it would erase the point of the vídeo, he used the glitch TO acess a gym, plus It was a bonus run

The yellow footage was simply to show the glitch, not anything official within the challenge! I understand if you prefer glitchless runs, I will go over that in the next video!
He said he wouldn't use glitches to prevent skipping the whole game. I don't get these rule tbh, skipping HMs is the same like skipping gyms, if it was used for skipping the cut HM he could avoid nugget bridge, route 24, 25 and SS Anne. Also walking through walls can be used to skip the whole game.
You either use glitches and the answer is zero for gen 1 or you don't use glitches and the answer is two. Going for something between feels weird and makes the whole thing super arbitrary from "How many Pokémon do you need to beat the Pokémon Franchise" to "How many Pokémon do you need to beat the Pokémon Franchise using glitches, but only a few, chosen for no apparent reason" . @@lulnara5128
As one of the 7 Gulpin fans in the world, I'm devastated to find out that Swalot is not actually an integral part of beating Gen 3 😭

If you want total across all games, why not use Charizard and Kingler? Then it's just adding Kingler or staying the same amount

At last, the annoyance of HMs gives back, by giving us this great interesting concept to explore. Very well made vid in every way.
Another interesting idea this made me think of: Beating the franchise with the least combined caught pokemon, as if you shared one pokedex across all games. So you could reduce the number by using the same pokemon in 2 different games (e.g. Blastoise in both Red and FireRed). Or by not evolving a pokemon, to prevent the dex from having another species "caught".
Edit: Sorry, didn't realize other people posted similar ideas lol.

In gen 1, this would likely mean either Charizard and Bulbasaur + Psyduck since Psyduck learns both Surf and Strength. Psyduck can be caught with the super rod, which is obtainable with just cut.
With Yellow, you'd need Pikachu, pick the same starter (Charizard or Bulbasaur) for cut and then use a Psyduck for surf and strength again.
Psyduck also learns whirlpool, strength and waterfall in gen 2 so you could use it alongside just Totodile who learns cut and surf, so you'd have only 4 total entries in gen 1 + 2. Psyduck is available in grass in crystal only, hence why you'd need Totodile for surf otherwise.
Gen 3 doesn't add any pokémon in Kanto remakes, and Mudkip alone already learns all 5 required HMs. But ofc that gift Castform... Meaning gen 3 adds two for a total of 6.
Gen 4... oof. You'll need 2 pokémon anyways because victory road infamously needs 5 HMs to conquer. In this case, Chimchar and Psyduck should have all tools to conquer victory road, and Psyduck is available super early in Oreburgh gate. Since the Johto remakes stay the same, this makes only one more addition in gen 4 for 7.
Gen 5 only needs cut, so single stage starter suffices. B2W2 needs cut, surf and strength, so the same starter + Psyduck suffices, Psyduck once again being available super early in Floccessy Ranch. You also are required to catch the box legendary in BW. So 2 more for 9.
In gen 6, Froakie alone can learn surf, strength, cut and waterfall, so not even a second pokémon neccessary. But you have a bunch of mandatory pokémon, like the Kanto starter (choose the same one), the Lapras, and the box legendary, so 3 additional ones (once again Hoenn can be done with Mudkip solo) for 12 total.
Gen 7 has only the starter and no required gift pokémon, so one more for 13 total.
Gen 8 has the Sinnoh remakes with only the starter (even though Cynthia would be hell...) and SwSh with no required gift pokémon, so one more for 14 total.
Gen 9 has the starter and the box legendary for 2 more for 16 total.
I chose Psyduck because Psyduck often can learn a *bunch* of HMs and is available in a ton of regions.
I didn't write down mandatory eggs since you're not required to hatch eggs to avoid entries.
So... tldr:
Gen 1: Pikachu, Charmander or Bulbasaur, Psyduck -> 3 (3 total)
Gen 2: Totodile -> 1 (4 total)
Gen 3: Mudkip, gift Castform -> 2 (6 total)
Gen 4: Chimchar -> 1 (7 total)
Gen 5: Any starter, Box legendary -> 2 (9 total)
Gen 6: Froakie, Lapras, Box legendary -> 3 (12 total)
Gen 7: Any starter -> 1 (13 total)
Gen 8: Any starter -> 1 (14 total)
Gen 9: Any starter, Box legendary -> 2 (16 total)
Two more possible entries I'm unsure on are Mega Lucario (I think you can refuse him and he waits?) and the dreamyard monkey in BW being mandatory, but otherwise, the list is surprisingly small.
Unless I missed a bunch, which I'd be happy to hear.

there are absolutely glitches you could use in gen 2, i remember the any% speedrun for gold used to warp to the hall of fame from right at the start using ACE, for your challenge, the glitch could be used to warp you to locations of gyms instead.

The fact that the Tate and Liza gym battle requires at least two Pokémon is the reason why I believe that a true solo run of the Gen III Hoenn games is actually impossible to complete. UA-camrs who attempt it usually allow using a second low level Pokémon with no damaging moves, but the simple fact that that Pokémon is on the field means that the opponent's AI will take it into account in its decisions. It will usually waste at least one move to kill it, which gives a free turn to your main Pokémon, and even if it uses an AoE move like Earthquake to target both, the way the damage calculation works in Pokémon means that the damage will be split between the two, so your main Pokémon will still take less damage that it would have otherwise taken in a "true" solo run. So yeah, those games cannot be completed truly solo.
Yeah, I talked more about the Castform since it was the moment we were forced to take a second Pokémon, but Tate and Liza are a much bigger roadblock since we couldn't have skipped it even if we had the ability to...

Great video! One thing that I do not remember you establishing was a no trading rule which I think is interesting. As if we do Red glitchless, and finish the game with Charizard & Kingler, we can use the Time Machine to trade our johto starter and the together for our kanto pokemon, which would only work if we have two Pokémon in each of the games, which we would. I think doing that would allow us to go through silver without having to catch a third, totaling to 4 Pokémon between RBYGSC. Those 4 equaling the same number we would need if we did the glitched segment for those two games. For the gen 3 games it wouldn’t matter since it would all end up equaling to 4 regardless. Plus if need be I think we would be able to transfer one from RBY and one from GSC through the virtual console up to gen 6 and use them later! Can’t wait to see what you show us from here!

After the Gen 2 section, I spent an absurd amount of time searching for any way to reduce it to just 2 Pokemon. Methods to skip the Togepi roadblock, methods to *use* Togepi to skip the Waterfalls, ways to *give* Togepi Waterfall, anything.
There are absolutely walk-through-walls glitches, wrong-warp glitches, mon data corruptions, and all sorts of other things that could bypass those at face value, but... the problem is, every single one of those requires at least as many Pokemon as you're already using, if not more. Most of the glitches in the game are based on the Coin Case, which requires a Quagsire and another miscellaneous mon to work, and exploiting the Time Capsule requires a whole new glitch mon, *plus* whatever mon you're trying to trade in.
The only potential method I can think of is an extremely convoluted chain -- Togepi can learn Metronome, and therefore can potentially use Transform to copy Sketch, which then would be used to permanently learn Waterfall. Problem is, this would have to happen all in one battle, without Togepi switching out, and the Trainer House that people usually use to exploit the Sketch glitch is only available *after* Tohjo Falls, and technically you'll still need an extra Smeargle in the process anyway. However! That's at least food for thought, if anyone else wants to keep investigating.
I'm pretty sure Sketch isn't possible to roll with Metronome, there's a few moves metronome won't roll in each gen I think

If we’re saying that that the goal is to beat the series using the minimum number of Pokémon, I’m thinking that in later gens you can use Pokémon bank/home to reuse Pokémon. After all, if you use the same Pokémon in 2 games, it’s still only one Pokémon.

Just read the description… I would like to see a game from both BW and BW2. There are differences in the story, and I hope that will mean that it is different in the number of Pokémon needed. Regardless, BW2 are sequels and not an enhanced version, so therefore they should be treated as a separate game

A very interesting and challenging alternative challenge to this would be to see what the fewest amount of unique species you could complete the entire series with. It would be interesting to see how crossreferencing availability across each game would affect your team choice

Thought I remembered doing this myself.
*Black:* Went through literally the whole story with just Oshawott...until the forced Reshiram catch happened at the very end, in N's castle. 2 caught. (Snivy could have been accepted too. Cut is the only required HM--it's literally just for the Dreamyard just after getting the Trio Badge--and Tepig is the only Unovan starter that doesn't learn Cut.)
*Shield:* Used Scorbunny throughout the entire story. I did need a second Pokémon for specifically the double battle leading up to Piers, as well as the entire Hammerlocke gauntlet...enter Clefable. I did catch the Eternatus from Darkest Day which was forced too. 3 caught.
*Shining Pearl:* No HM from the party (instead you hire wild Pokémon via the Pokétch--no party slot required!), so I just went Turtwig hoping to beat the main story with just my starter...until I got to the forced double battle at Spear Pillar. I was forced to Quick Ball a wild Clefairy inside the sacred mountain, just for that double battle. Luckily, no need to catch the legendary. 2 caught.
*Scarlet:* Took the DLC into account. I need two Pokémon for Ryme, and I need *_THREE_* Pokémon to be able to raid Team Star's bases. Since I need Ogerpon and an Alolan form to put the Blueberry League in logic anyway, I put those two (with Exeggutor as the entry of choice for the Alolan form) and my starter, Sprigatito, and used them to beat the base game. Then I realized I needed two Pokémon that I caught in the Terarium specifically for Drayton's trial (with the second being another Exeggutor to avoid another caught species entry). Koraidon was registered as caught because of the scripted Koraidon mirror match. DLC ends in catching Terapagos. 3 caught for base game (up to but not including Koraidon), 5 after catching Terapagos.
Interesting results! I have only done some general research into the later games, so I'm not sure how many they will take for me, but maybe I'll be able to save 1 or 2 Pokémon somewhere!
+ in Black 2/White 2 we need only Surf for the Team Plasma Ship (south on the city with water badge)
@@wznak you still need strength to get to the Crustle blocking the path to the plasma frigate, and you need three slots anyway because of Charles in Driftveil (triple and rotation require three slots in the party)

Great video, I’m excited for the follow ups. I’m sure you’ll do DS, then 3DS and Switch. Out of all of them I think the challenge will become easier in gen 7 onwards because of the removal of HM moves, though if I remember correctly you could get through Unova in Black and White with just Samurott since HMs were reserved for exploration outside of the main routes and only cut was needed for the story portion in the Dreamyard.

This is a really cool challenge idea and the video is also very good.
Also it turns out I misunderstood the challenge at first based on the title. Basically I thought you would try to beat the franchise with the fewest unique Pokemon species i.e. you wouldn't count a pokemon twice if you used it in multiple games.
That variant is easier in some regards, since you'd be able to run some games with bigger teams, but I think it would be interesting to see how useful some Pokemon can be across the games.
This is a very interesting challenge and I'm quite surprised that it hasn't been done before.
It's unfortunate that the Let's Go games exist as they are going to make the total Pokemon needed skyrocket, but at the same time I'm quite interested in how you will minimize the total Pokemon needed to beat those games.
Also from looking at your channel this appears to be your first video and I just want to say that you did a great job.

I can't wait for the next one. Remember, starting in Gen 4 you xan start moving pokemon from previous generations forward (though some of the methods don't exist anymore outside of... "Unsanctioned" means)

Awesome video and very well edited! One recommendation though is to maybe keep track of a second list for glitchless runs. The glitches are cool to see as the most "optimized" version of each run, but it's obviously not how the games were intended to be played.
It's a very interesting challenge though and I am really curious about how the future gens will play out. Keep up the great work!

I probably haven't done enough research for this but I thiiiink you can cut the total number of pokemon down by reusing some, for example if you made, say, Goldeen your water type in the gen 1, then they can learn Waterfall in Gen 2, bringing the total (minus the walk-through-walls glitch) for the two generations down from 5 to 4

Also, in pokemon yellow, you can do the mew glitch and beat it with only 2 mons (since mew can learn all TMs and HMs)
Not once in my life have I ever gone thru a game with a full team. Unless you make it a point to battle ALL trainers, your mons won't all level enough.

So all 8 badges are required to prevent glitches to cheat the game, so by that logic 2 pokemon in gen 1 is the minimum as the "walk through walls to cross water" is technically a glitch too and therefor not allowed.

tbh, I thought you could use the same pokemons you already added to the team, to save space. Picking Charizard, and kingler on leaf green would add only one pokemon and "redeem" the glitch on pokemon Red. But i guess I just didnt catch the challenge idea from start, then😅. Tho it would be interesting seen the oportunities for reusing pokemons growing on the other games. It would be another think to consider, when planing what pokemons to chose on previows games.

Fun fact, if it wasnt for that castform, you could beat the game with just mudkip registered in your pokedex by trading the Wynaut egg to a friend! It WOULD HAVE let you go through the entire ending cutscene with just one picture

In Sinnoh Empoleon can learn every single mandatory HM (Cut, Rock Smash, Strength, Rock Climb, Surf, Waterfall), so your only problem will be dungeons that require more than 4 HMs, which i think the only one is victory road which requires all but Cut. You probably won't play Platinum because of Cynthia's Togepi egg and overall it having many more gift mons. I think the only required gift mon in DP is the Riolu egg, but you will need a second mon for HMs anyway so you can just keep Empoleon and Lucario and beat the game with them imo unless i'm missing something (Lucario can learn half of the mandatory HMs)

Edit: Actually after looking it up the Riley section is optional, so you can just use the tweaking trick to get to the league after Volkner and you should be able to win with just Empoleon
I used to finish Pokémon Yellow with 6 Pokémon caught in my dex. I'd use Pikachu, grind to level 20 to beat Brock, buy the Magikarp at Mt Moon, then accept Charmander over Nugget Bridge. Gyarados had surf and strength, Charizard got Cut and fly, and Pikachu had flash

Gift Pokemon: There's a few eggs you can get. Happiny, Togepi (Platinum) and Riolu, all of which are optional. There's also an Eevee from Bede in the postgame which is optional too. Total Required: 0
Un-skippable pokemon: Starter. Total: 1
Prof Rowan requires you to see all pokemon in the region to progress to the post game. You don't need to catch any of them, since every pokemon can be seen by talking to NPCs, trainers or wild battles.
Required HMs: Cut for Eterna Team Galactic HQ, then Rock Smash, Strength, Surf, Rock Climb at multiple points and Waterfall just before and inside of Victory Road. Required HMs: 6
Most HMs needed at one time: 5. To get through Victory Road, you need Surf, Waterfall, Rock Smash, Rock Climb and Strength. However, what if you went around Victory Road instead?
In order to beat all gyms with the least number of pokemon (And even least number of HMs), the Tweaking Gltich is the answer. Start with either Diamond or Pearl, since Platinum is mostly patched. The glitch is first accessible in Jubilife City after getting the bike and after the 2nd Gym. Only Rock Smash and Cut are needed up to that point, Chimchar can handle it. The Tweaking Glitch can take you to basically anywhere in the game. After getting the bike, you can get the 3rd, 4th and 5th badges without any extra HMs or glitches. In order to get to Canalave City without Surf, you perform a tweak and travel through the void until you get there. Just make sure not to use the Pokemon Center there. Once you have the 6th badge and the lake bomb goes off, you can death warp. From there you can get to the southern 2 lakes by foot, then tweak yourself to Snowpoint City to bypass Strength usage. Again, no Pokemon Center, beat gym, death warp. Now tweak back to Lake Acuity, to skip rock climb usage, and Death Warp. Once you free the Lake Trio, tweak to the submit of Mt Cornet. Beat Galactic, beat the Dialga / Palkia. Death Warp. Now go get the 8th gym badge and do one final tweak to get to the entrance of the Pokemon League (Side note: Its possible to activate the "Champion Beaten" cutscene in the void, so if beating the elite 4 + champion isn't a requirement, you can end it here). Now beat Barry, the elite 4 and Cynthia and finish the run with 1 Pokemon and 2 required HMs.
I played Pokemon Pearl many times as a kid, so I think that covers everything, but I might be missing something. Ofc, if the void isn't allowed then you'll need 2 pokemon because of Victory Road.

if you teach charizard fly, you don't need to worry about the softlock
Letting your pokemon evolve feels like “multiple pokemon” to me, since your Pokédex is at 5 under the charizard/kingler condition whereas charmander/krabby would only be 2
Banning evolution (unless it becomes literally impossible) feels like truest way to do this

Great video. My only complaint is how quiet it was. I usually keep my speakers at 50%, but I had to turn them up to 100% just to hear you at a normal speaking volume (yes, youtube was at 100% too).
I was afraid of that... I even doubled the volume of my voice but it still wasn't enough! I will take care to not have that happen from now on.
i had a lot of fun running heart gold with only feraligatr. sucked to have to manually backtrack so much and definitely sucked to figure out how to get back to and from the move deleter before the elite four. i couldve done the postgame if i had the patience to trek between celadon and fuschia for ice beam, but that was where i just called it good. cheers to Louisiana! she lives on with her shiny lil champion ribbon in my Home boxes
Having to bike around the regions is definitely one of the toughest parts of these challenges... Really makes you miss Fly!
For the overall challenge: If you count Pokedex entries (only catched ones) instead of individual Pokemons, then picking Charizard and Garados for the remake of gen 1 would be most efficient, as they don't add to the Pokedex entries =)
That is true, the reason I picked different ones is to have a more varied list at the end. But a "minimal Pokédex" run is super interesting and will be brought up!
10:24 It may actually be possible to complete Yellow with just two. The Trainer Fly Glitch (aka Mew Glitch) lets you turn a trainer battle into a wild encounter. And despite the name, Escape Ropes or fainting to Poison in the overworld also work.
Since the Pokémon encountered is based on the Special of your last opponent, you'd just need to find someone with the right Special to spawn a Krabby.
EDIT: Okay. Upon looking into it, you'd need something with 78 Special before the THIRD GYM. That's not possible even INCLUDING Pokémon encountered via Trainer Fly. And Ditto isnt available yet, so...
