Our first ever race in New York was at Roosevelt Raceway in 1986, Lachance drove for us that night. We pretty much raced exclusivley in New Jersey, but crossed the river as one of our decent 3yr olds was still money eliglible for a NW's over $, The horse Theatre Lobell,(Slapstick out of a Bye Bye Bird mare) was a good closer, but Lachance took him to the lead, and won for fun, the reason Im telling this, is the horse threw a shoe and part of his hoof came off with it,despite this, Lachance, kept him together & said to our trainer get his hoof better, I would like to drive him for you when he comes back. Lachance was the best driver on a half mile track that I ever saw.

My favorite driver ever. I'm thrilled that he said Doc's Fella was his favorite horse, he was mine too. I would go to Roosevelt Raceway just to see him. Wasn't the greatest, but a warrior. Loved him

A link to Doc's Fella......in this one, he has incredible patience....the horse actually winds up last at the top of the stretch, but somehow gets up....and at this time, I remember he was always Michel....at least to announcers and fans...but became "Mike" not too long after. I actually preferred the French pronunciation of his full name....just sounded cooler.... ua-cam.com/video/lWM4jm4GwJk/v-deo.html

Another Doc's Fella race.....first over. At this time, people were now fans of his and realized how great a driver he was. Reminds me a little of Buddy Gilmour here.....Buddy was probably one of the best at being able to have a horse first over and somehow keep him relaxed and fresh for the stretch drive....gotta be in the hands, and Mike Lachance proved he could do it too. ua-cam.com/video/ZA99FNfMoHU/v-deo.html

Now this was more the style we got used to with Mike Lachance.....just makes sense...when you have the best horse, you pretty much want to control the race. And his stock got better and better. I have to admit, I didn't really think he would thrive at The Meadowlands, just because I felt he liked the front too much, but he surprised me and did fantastic. And of course, racing changed and the front became the place to be for quite a few years. ua-cam.com/video/A-cewuAw2uU/v-deo.html

Not a high quality video, and the sound and video is a little off, but its a great race....11 3 year old trotters on a 5/8th track it was bound to be fun to watch.....driven beautifully. And a nice but short interview at the end. 1990. Embassy Lobell. ua-cam.com/video/aDJC5rxb-Uk/v-deo.html

My thoughts exactly. I never met the guy but still feel like I know him, another brother who likes horses. Some, like Mike, were better at it than the rest of us, but all that really mattered was our desire to be around horses. Simple as that. Best wishes to Mike and his family.

Did Meadowlands do anything? They had a retirement night for Cat and JC......just wondering. Can't believe I missed both. Would like to see them have a yearly event where they bring back all the old greats from 75 on........just a big night for people like me who lived the best of times through those years. Even the guys who lost their license.....they were all part of a great time in this sport.
Smart for him to retire with his health. As we age, we can get more cautious, but NOTHING makes up for the lost reflex of youth.....nice interview!! Great guy and great personality. He has nothing to prove, and can look in the rearview mirror when he sees a big race remembering the past, but he can do a lot more family stuff now too....just have to fill the void of not driving with something just as positive. One nice thing now....if you want to lay on the couch and take a nap at 5pm, you don't have to get up and be at the track for the 1st race.
