My sister wore braces for like 2 years and a half. After they took her braces off she had to wear retainers at night and one night they fell of and my dog chew them or something. At the end she never asked for new retainers and 2 yeas later she got a gap between her teeth and had to wear braces for another year...so yeah make sure you ask for new retainers as soon as possible or else you will end up like my sister or keep just keep them away from dogs lol

My orthodontist gave me a clear retainer that’s included in the treatment plan and then a second back up retainer for free which was super nice

I got my braces off about a decade ago. I haven’t touched my retainer in YEARS! I just found it at my parents house... felt guilty for not wearing it. So I cleaned it, popped it in, and now am watching retainer videos! I’m lucky it still fits! I had braces for 3 years!

I’ve had my braces for 2 year and a month. I’m getting them off in 2 weeks 😁 though I feel infinitely annoyed about the retainers. I got my braces to fix a *temporary* problem. Not get the temporary solved and start a permanent problem.
Shout out to me. Hahaha I make retainers. Since you said you didn't know how they were made, let me explain...
1. After the impression is taken, the lab tech pours them up. This is where they mix up stone (aka plaster) and "pour up" the impression. The stone is vibrated into every nook and cranny with a a special machine for stone.
2. after the model has set up (the time it takes depends on what is mixed with the powder stone and type of stone used), it is removed from the impression.
3. Next, it is taken over to the model trimmer and trimmed. You want to have a flat surface on the bottom and no flange on the sides or front. This is also when I turn my machine on for actually making them.
4. Then, I prep the model. I knock off all bubbles (these are caused my air pockets when the impression is taken). They can be tiny to large. I also check to see if anything needs to be blocked out - lingual retainers (fixed, metal wire), baby teeth and various other things.
5. Once the model is ready I place the plastic sheet into the suckdown machine and melt the plastic. Once the plastic sags where it needs to be, the vacuum is turned on and it sucks the plastic around all parts of the model.
6. The next thing is to place in water (or spray with setting spray if that's what your office uses) so it's not hot for the next step.
7. This step could be eliminated depending on the tools each office uses, but this is where I use a Dremel. I cut out around the retainer roughly.
8. Next I use scissors and cut off the excess so that the plastic goes slightly above the gumline.
9. After they are trimmed, I use a special smoothing wheel to make sure it has no rough spots.
10. The final step is a rinse with cold water to make sure there are no stone pieces left behind.
Depending on the experience and knowledge of the lab tech retainers can be made in a short amount of time. I can make retainers in as little as 7 minutes. I hope that helps you learn about the process of making retainers. If you have any questions, just ask! :)

@@HeavyToad I just got mine and didn't realize I was going to gag everytime I talked. I turned my car around to let them know and told me it was normal and just needed to get use to them. Hopefully that's true because I am so annoyed by them. I wish I only had to wear them at night.

It depends on your orthodontic treatment. Some people have it for 1 or 3 years, while others may have it for longer. This all depends on the state of your teeth and also age. For me, I have to wear my retainer for 3 years at night, but I started off with 15 hours for the first month.
So, I have a wired retainer, and once I put it back in after eating or going to a waterpark I HAVE THE BIGGEST LISP! it is crazyyyyyy

y’all should clean your retainers with some mild dish soap! It doesn’t do any damage to the retainers and it will help them stay clean! :)))

This is a good to hear. I have never write braces on my entire life. Also to keep the retainers safe always put it inside your drawer or a place thst you mostly pack and unpack. But it is okay if you made this late about the braces tips and tutorial. Very soon I will make music theory vids. I always brush my teeth twice daily or when I am done eating. People have different things. I agree that it varies and depends on other people wearing retainer

From what I've gathered I'm literally one of the few people who has a fixed retainer on both bottom and upper teeth as well as clear retainers. That makes me happy because my teeth are definitely not gonna move :)
I LOVE how clean my retaiiners are after using a denture cleaner tab! I would recommend them for EVERYONE who wears retainers or aligners!
My oldest sister refused to wear her retainers for some reason and the dog ended up eating them. Her teeth now have went back to the way they were before and my parents aren’t spending another €1000+ so she is 21 now with really bad teeth. My parents don’t want the same happening to me so I had to wait 4 more years than she did to get mine. I’m getting mine now when dentists reopen

Try this if you don't want smelly retainers. Clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner/brush/scrapper before brushing then rinse with a good mouthwash. I scrap my tongue one last time after the rinsing and my mouth never smells in the morning.
I didn’t have to wear my retainers permanently when I got my braces off I only have to wear a clear one at night time and I have no bar at the back of my teeth

I got my braces off today. And I got permanent retainers fixed to my bottom teeth. And in the next 3 days I will be getting my Removable retainers . I can't wait for it. Im loving how my teeth looks now . All the pain I had to go through totally feels worth. ♥️

DO NOT clean your retainers with a toothbrush because it creates abrasions in the retainers which makes bacteria get stuck inside of there and then they smell weird so yeah just ask your orthodontist about how to clean them because mine told me what I just told you so ya

Hey Emma! I just got my braces off today and was looking for something like this so ty! Even though this is a really old video, I have been watching all your braces videos my whole journey with braces and they have honestly been so helpful! One thing I recommend though is don't use hand soap to clean your retainers. You can get a retained cleaner, which is a sort of machine (that I have) which is called sonic cleaner, as well as tablettes (like disclosing tablets) that help clean as well. I do this once a week, to make sure my teeth don’t become a breeding ground for bacteria! Anyone who is getting their braces off soon, it’s totally fine, and isn’t that painful. Good luck!

I'm currently on Invisalign, and sometimes I wish I got braces when I was younger so I can enjoy all the colors haha, but the good thing about wearing Invisalign is that it preps you well on getting used to retainers because they're basically retainers themselves

At my ortho everyone gets the wire retainer and then you can have a choice to pay additionally to get a clear retainer (the wire ones are much stronger) and then you get both. Also if needed my ortho will give certain people the fixed retainer if they need it.
Thank you for explaining so much and sharing your experience. I had braces for 2 and a half years, and had it taken off a few days ago. I'm waiting for my retainers to be done which I had to wait for another 2 days. I'm so worried my teeth will move within these few days of waiting. Hello Emma, thanks again for sharing this informative video with us. There's some important questions i forgot to ask on my comment yesterday.
1. Can you eat, chew meat, chicken, salad or drink hot drinks with this Fixed or Permanent Retainer you now have on ( which is glued in-between the middle of the teeth ) ?
2. Does it cause any kind of discomfort and do you feel like getting it removed sometimes?
3. What kind of Flossing is suitable for this Fixed Retainer or what type are you using ( being that it's impossible to use a regular flossing because of the tiny wire lining up the teeth ) ?
4. How do you manage to maintain the whiteness of your teeth after whitening or what kind of toothpaste do you use ?
Am planning on getting the Fixed Retainer after am done with my Aligners program. This video really helped me in knowing why I have to swallow a lot of spit while wearing the Aligner Retainers as well as me having problem closing my mouth after when wearing the Aligners. And you spoke about this in your video.

My gums are swollen and when i put my retainers i cant explain how bad it hurts. And my dentist is mean as hell i am afraid he would yell at me or something and i dont realy know what to do...

yes they do get like that i’ve been soaking them in white vinegar and water in a bowl and swishing them around and using a qtip. their still not as clean as i want them to be but it’s only day 6
Should I brush my teeth after eating and before I put my retainers back in?

the good thing about living in the UK and not the US is that our health care and braces and retainers etc are free :)

For the first 6 months I had to wear them full time but after I only had to wear it at night
I just got my braces out like 2 weeks ago and I only have to wear my retainers at night. Well, I can wear it at any time actually as long as I wear it for 6-7 hours a day so I just wear it at night. I'm so glad I don't have to wear them all day!
I only wear clear retainers at night, alternating between the upper and lower one each night. I also have fixed retainers on both upper and lower teeth.

Got my braces off yesterday, and my retainers today 😊 I actually love how my retainer makes my teeth look, because I have a teeny chip on one of my front tooth’s and it isn’t noticeable because of the retainer
My retainers cost almost $800 just fix both of them, if one of them is broken, I pay $400, it's so ridiculous!
It's Ornella in London we have the NHS and I got my braces for 2 years for free and I’m getting retainers for free.
