    Back in the day! I owned a chevy z/24 and I thought it was pretty fast! Being my first new car that I could afford in those days! Back then I was young and happy with my new purchase, that I use to cruise down the streets like every other young blooded guy looking for some to race against. Then this guy showed up next to me with that little dodge! I really didn't know anything that much about that car! Except that to me it was just a econo box car! But when we both squared up to the stop light, I was thinking to my self! Boy I'm gonna smoke this guy to smethering!! But when the light turned GREEN!! That little sucker left me with my yaw wide open!! He smoke ME!! By as much as 4car length and I couldn't even catch catch up with him! He was gone!! All I saw was nothing but tail lights. It wasn't until later that I started doing some research and found out that car was more than an econobox! It was turbo charged little demon! That was developed in part with the help of carrol Shelby, that was a little sleeper at that time. It was a very fast little car indeed for its time.

      My older brother bought a 1987 Z24 brand new. It was blue with 5spd and the cowl hood. It was a cool car, and quick for what it was.

      I use to blow away z24s all the time with my Omni, non-turbo, 5 speed. Fast little car.

      From unjustly maligned $#!+box to the hottest hatch of the '80s: Chrysler's true believers turned their first FWD econobox into a trackday terror: I'm not entirely surprised they still dominate at autocrosses alongside their MG Midget predecessors.

      Hottest hatch of the '80s - and yes, especially including the Lancia Delta. Pike's Peak Rally Class 1986: I rest my case.

    Best part is, that is one of the slower GLH-T's. There are several in the 10 second range.

    with the 2.5 longer stroke engine and the upper end turbo setup it would fly,i've got a RAMPAGE, turboed and it will never be for sale,my doctor said it is good for my blood pressure because I laugh my self silly when I drive it,i'm used to hemi challengers and cudas,but where are you going to get a truck/car you can throw an engine in the back and leave,MOPAR ENGINEERS HAD IMAGINATION AND GUTS TO BUILD THESE LITTLE THROW AWAY VEHICLES=38 MPG,NO ONES LAUGHING NOW

    What is parts availability like with the GLH?

    • @davidenobile426
      @davidenobile426 8 років тому +4

      There are plenty of parts available, like bigger turbos, high performance radiators and intercoolers, boost controllers, exhausts,...

    • @isaakwelch3451
      @isaakwelch3451 4 роки тому

      Fair bit of performance stuff available. Lots of parts available as long as you dont have one of the specialty models.

    So I have a 89 omni automatic and I really want to put the glhs In it so I can show these ricers what American mopar is all about haha on a scale of 1-10 how difficult is it to find the engine and all other stuff for it? Or is it better to just make it mint as is for nostalgic value?I enjoy it but I know she got potential aha

    • @davidenobile426
      @davidenobile426 8 років тому

      Leave her original, you don't find many of them. If you really want buy yourself a true GLH with a 5 speed. They go for around $10000. They're not cheap, but they're a lot of car

    • @rishardlopez5484
      @rishardlopez5484 8 років тому

      +Dave's Garage wheres the best place online for parts? i have kinda a log way to go but its nearly there to mint, just hard finding parts .-.

    • @davidenobile426
      @davidenobile426 8 років тому

      +Rishard Lopez I suggest you to leave her stock, but if really want to modify it there's a website called K Car Club or something like that and they sometimes have cool stuff for sale. You can also go on craigslist and on some official MOPAR websites to find original parts with maybe even a warranty. If you just want to change the engine to a 2.5 and the suspension I think it will cost you around 5K, if you want to make it manual transmission you have to add at least another 3K. So you'll end up with a 5k to 8k build that, in my opinion, will ruin the car if it is in good condition, but no doubt it will be a fun car. I highly recommand you to look up for Dodge Omni GLH for sale on the web. Yesterday I found a red (exterior and interior) GLH all original, not restored, in very good condition for 7k. That will be better. Buy yourself the GLH and leave your Omni original. After all the car is yours so do what you want, but that is my advice

      Not really. They only made 500 GLHS Omni's, which were regular GLH Omni's fitted with the later (1988) T2 engine that were found in Daytonas, Shadows, Spirits, etc. Parts are easy and cheap to come by and they all mostly interchange

    almost anything can be modded to run a 10 sec 1\4. Theres no denying they will run hard . Being mid 80s 4 cylinders and outrunning their contemporary V8 powered pony cars says a bunch. But if a turbo or supercharged mid 80s v8 mustangs or camero would have been built nobody would be talking about the egg shaped Japanese turbo car Shelby and Iacocca put stickers on :)

      @21Piloteer 6 років тому +1

      Sorta kinda. The shape was more or less based on the Rabbit. But...the early Omni's (78-around 80) did use 1.7 VW engines until Chrysler produced the 2.2.

      The Omni origins are a French car a Simca and Talbot. VW engines were junk and gave Omni a Consumer Reports rating of,,NOT ACCEPTABLE on the cover of their magazine.

      Drove my Shelby Charger to Chrysler Museum to be in SDAC car show got 38 MPG. (also owned a Glh omni same thing kinda) both cars easy 12's.
      Recipe for easy 12 second car. Stage 2 clutch, molly plate and bobble strut. fuel pump, injectors and computer stage 2. for motor common 2.5 block de-stroked to 2.2.
      all parts were used from junk yard. junk yard used Mahle pistons, t-2 rods and turbo, 89 van used cam with roller rockers. used junk yard not log intake and intercooler.
      Set up car to run 13's on street tires then swap out to slicks and instant 12's.
      This was my daily driver to work 24 miles one way :). Also drove it back and fourth to track 3 plus years. best 12.58 at 110 mph .... and yes that video with both cars racing is on UA-cam.

    I have had 2 of them and they will hunt once spooled up . But no way are they 10 second cars by any stretch of the imagination. My 07 Shelby GT\SC is far faster and only a low 12 car without slicks and with decent slicks its only gone 11.43 at 126 mph

      I have an '85 GLH that hits low 11's. power to weight ratio is also something to consider when talking about pulling against any of the "big brother" muscles. 80% of the power pulling less than 60% of the weight. All it takes is traction
