Ji-yeung was written, acted, and executed beautifully. She was around just long enough to get us to care about her, and helped push our main girls character forward in a way that was so organic and emotional. Absolutely best part of the show for me
That’s how I felt with her as well, her reasons were logical, she didn’t know what to spend with that cash, so she gave her life away, for someone who did. Honestly I probably would do the same thing. Because if I was her, and still lived not knowing what to do with the money, but the person did, and died. I’ll probably just have a lot of regrets, knowing that person needed that money more then me. But it wouldn’t be enough to kill myself, knowing they sacrificed their life for me.

I haven’t watched the show yet but okay that hurt me. I think I’ve already moved on from that just a year ago. But for years, I was feeling hopeless too and I had nothing to look forward to. I trued confiding that to many of my friends but they just laughed at me. It was always just that feeling of hopelessness, pain, and anxiety of what today, tomorrow, and the years to come would bring me. I’m not exaggerating when I say I felt nothing else during those years. I tried doing everything to help myself feel anything else, but there was nothing. So it really hits hard seeing this kinda thing. And knowing that people are actually validating this struggle now. Back then, I really had no one. As in no one. Their conversation before the game hits a bit harder: Jiyeon: Then play with me, I'll make sure that you win Saebyeok: What will you do? Jiyeon: Whatever it takes
When Ji Yeong said she is going to take sae byeok out for fun and teach her how to spend money like a South Korean girl then realized they can’t both survive this game 😭😭😭😭😭😭 like a thousand daggers stabbed my heart 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Ji Yeong was the most selfless Ali was so pure and loyal Sae Byeok was determined and caring Gi Hun is very understanding And then there's... Player 101 who was the biggest A-hole Player 212 who was a desperate biatch Il-nam was amazing at first but ended up being a shitty person Sang Woo was a also a piece of shit
According to their interview, these two actually became good friends on the set due to them being the same age. The most heartbreaking moment of the show in my opinion.
It's the fact this is her acting debut, she did an amazing job bruh. Hope to see her more in acting. Really like badass east Asian tomboys. You guys should check Sweet Home. That's amazing too.
The line that first hit me hard in this scene was "Its Sae-byeok", when Saebyoek told Jiyeong her name without being prompted too. The first time her name was revealed, she only told people as a survival instinct, knowing that she had to form connections and build trust with the people in the team in order to survive. But this time, that was not at stake. She knows one of them will die, so technically sharing her name won't help her survive in the games. Her sharing that integral part of her identity, her name, was purely because she cared about Jiyeong as a friend and it was her final plea to be remembered if she died.
You know what’s even sadder? I believe that Jiyeong’s newly formed friendship with Saebyeok had given her a few new reasons to live. At the end, she kept talking about places they could go together and fun things they could do together, if they had made it out alive…together. Jiyeong did have a deeper connection with Saebyeok, maybe like a “soulmate” type of friendship. She felt like she was understood by her. That’s probably why she told her all those traumatic personal stories that was probably never shared with anyone else, because those who have a happy family would likely judge her for what she had done to her (monster) father. She wasn’t able to meet truly empathetic friends who could understand her sufferings, who didn’t look down on her or ignore her because she’s a “weird quiet poor girl” or something, who even tried to help her out. And now that she finally found a true friend, it was all too late. This world really failed her and it breaks my heart😔
It’s so sad that she sacrificed HER LIFE so sae byeok could live happily but she also died😭😭😭 i have a theory tho: when sae byeok died, it wasn’t announced that she’s eliminated. So maybe she didn’t die?
the marble game was by far the most peaceful and painful game in the series because they realize they have to partner with their friends just to betray and kill each other :(
I cried like a bitch when Ji-yeong died, she was a true friend 😭😭 her death and Ali's death just shattered my soul and just when I thought I had enough, two episodes later.. 😭😭😭
I get it .. Ali's death was really heartbreaking but damn this scene just hit me like truck. Never had I ever got so attached to a character who has literally there for 2 episodes
I got a feeling jiyeong was going to let saebyoek win by sacrificing herself, but I still shed tears immediately when jiyeong dropped the marble at her feet, like my heart just dropped to my stomach with the marble. I only cried here in the entire drama.
i cried 2 times during the entire show; once when Jiyeong died and then when Saebyeok was killed...didnt expect Saebyeok to die tbh :(( i was rooting for her..
The acting in this series was immaculate, especially these two. Their emotions were so real, they had us crying the whole series. And jiyeon's character was so beautifully written and executed.
The fact that she was talking about going to Jeju island together and then just decided that she would let Sae-Byeok win just broke my heart. She deserved to live 😭
This to me was the best duo I’ve ever seen in any show ever. She literally was on only two episodes and they had such a great and amazing chemistry. That final part where they were tearing up just broke my heart. I cry every time I see this scene. Just the best episode ever. So hard watching her go
💔 pain, but still sae-byeok died so this makes the sacrifice kinda useless but atleast sa-byeok was able to make a promise with gi-hun in the end which is to watch after her brother, the reason why sae-byeok chose this path is because she just wanted to live happily with her family
Can we please just get a short film showing both Ji-yeong and Sae-byeok spending time together at Jeju island PLEASE i swear i need it cause this scene mess me up so bad it's so fked up.. When she asked her if they should go to Jeju together but then remembered the situation they're in, that totally killed me sitting through that whole scene up till the part where she was executed was absolute HELL..
while all the men are crying, begging. lying and tricking people who they call "best friends, friends, brothers", these 2 girls are just in their own world and getting to know each other. Even want to play fair and sacrifice for each other
the moment that tears me apart whenever i watch it again is when jiyeong says ‘thanks for playing with me’ and the brief second when she pauses and her face creases in pain and her voice breaks a bit. its like she understands the gravity of what shes doing and is visibly grappling with what it means to give her life up and cant hide that fear and sadness or hold back that silent sob but still she puts on a genuine smile for saebyeok again. sorry for the essay but that single pause has been haunting my mind ever since i watched this ep like the amount of emotions conveyed in that single sentence is insane, but just in that brief second? yoomi is so talented. and also i am sending her my therapy bills
Their fates crossed for a brief moment, and vanished like thin air. They must be visiting Jeju Island together 💖 Hope you guys see each other again in next life.
The reason she was kind of amused when Sae Byeok said she wanted to go to Jeju Island is that it is very close to the south coast of Korea, and there are many cheap flights there every day, and it is a common place for Koreans to visit, nothing too exotic at all. Yet it is also very nice, an island with a tall volcano in the middle and many beautiful sights to see and very friendly people.
And Kang Sae-byeok is from North Korea. Jeju Island is the most interested tourist destination in South Korea for North Koreans. North Koreans know Jeju Island as a mysterious island in South Korea and are very interested with fantasies about Jeju Island. However, North Koreans are unable to travel abroad, and the two Koreas, which have been divided for more than 70 years since the war is not over, are impossible to meet each other and travel with each other. On the contrary, it is in the same context that South Koreans cannot visit North Korea. Therefore, North Korean defectors living in South Korea are also popular to travel to Jeju Island.
Ji-yeong didn't have much screen time but in that small amount of time, she was able to move everyone's heart and become one of the most loved characters of ‘Squid Game’🥺Not only was her character well-written but also her acting skills were on point..I really hope we get to see Hoyeon and Yoomi work together in the future 🤍

Couldn't come out of Ji yeong's character... Felt heavy hearted, even though it's just acting, her smile at the end literally made me teary eyed throughout the episode and even after that...
Ji-yeong and Sae-Byeok are for me the most touching characters in the whole story and the best too. Their friendship is beautiful and you can feel the chemistry between Ho Yeon Jung and You Mi Lee and between Sae-Byeok and Ji-yeong. The scene is particularly touching and upsetting both for the actresses who confessed to having had a lot of trouble shooting this scene but also for the characters. Their friendship has a very pure and innocent side that contrasts with their tragic stories and the morbid setting of the series. This scene really upset me. Episode 6 and Episode 8 were the hardest to watch for me. Sae-Byeok and Ji-yeong will forever remain in my heart, as will their actresses who gave a stunning performance. Thanks to them, thank you to Sae-Byeok and Ji-yeong for existing in this rotten world and bringing a glimmer of hope and love to it ❤️❤️
I cried like a b***** during this scene. Knowing how hopeless ji yeong must have felt and how she LITERALLY sacrifices herself so that sae byeok could win and after they shot her I kept saying to myself "She's gone, She's never coming back." Like i litrally cried so hard, but sae byeok still died 😔
For me the saddest part about Ji-Yeong is that she died fully knowing/thinking that she only had one life. When she points out the hypocrisy of the religious man its fairly obvious she isn’t religious herself. So she dies full well for her own moral reasoning and fully believing she had died for a greater cause with no possible afterlife or benefit to herself. She died a selfless, but needless death.
That marble episode broke my heart they got to know each other for half an hour then she gets killed it made me cry 😢 Man this series is brutal but amazing
i just realized ji yeong didn't bother to had a happy dream because of her childhood circumtances but in the middle of their conversation she finally dream. she dream that she and seo byeok will leave the game and they go to the jeju island. when she realize that it will never happen, she gave up on her dream and give it to seo byeok. go out in the game alive, save her families and go to jeju island. when she says it my heart breaks into pieces. she's so good at acting i can feel what emotions does her character feels. i admit that this episode is my favorite because it touched my heart.
I can't- that smile after she knew what was going to happen broke my heart!💔 She deserved to live man😭 this character was so beautifully written ❣ that left us crying!🖤
This show had me thinking about life a lot. Life is a bit like this show. We are all going to die eventually. No exceptions. But we are kinda denying that truth. Most of our problems don't really matter, but we choose to focus on them because we don't know do deal with life differently. The last scene when his mother died... Man... Too much for me. I bet, if he knew, he would've chosen to spend the last days with here instead of trying to earn money. It doesn't matter how, Squid game or regular job... Time will fly by...
The scene where Gi hun went to find Sae-byeok was so sad too , if I'm not wrong he is alone now , no family members in S.K , the moment he asked where Sae-Byeok is , I cried 2seconds later
You are right. What matters are people around us. And it is also important how we live and what we value. Great episode with best writing and actors. We need more of this.
Yea nah, by winning he was able to make his impact on the world in his own way - being there for his mom in her last moments is important no doubt, but ultimately it only holds personal emotional value - him winning the game SHARED happiness to others and that's more impactful in the end.
You know what makes me cry about this the most? Is that in this episode, it really shows that Sae-Byeok really cared about Ji-Yeong. It’s the first time I saw both of them cry, and it was really heartbreaking for me as they are both my favorite characters. They should’ve both escaped instead of the main character, but what’d you expect? Main characters will always win, and that’s why they are the main character. Something that makes me cry when I remember about it, is that Ji-Yeong expects Sae-Byeok to win, but she doesn’t. She was so close but dies because of stupid glass and childhood friend guy. (Sangwoo) I have a friendship like that and if it ever breaks I would have the exact same reaction as Sae-Byeok. JEJU ISLAND IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE AND THEY NEED TO GO TOGETHER!!!

Comment of the decade
Sae Byeok, Ji Yeong and Ali were the best characters in the whole season.
PEROIDT
Always❤
agreed,
ji yeong and ali were angels
seong gi hun lost a dear friend
and sae byeok lost a chance to have a new friend
they all deserved better
I'd say Gi-hun too
Ji Yeong was the most selfless
Ali was so pure and loyal
Sae Byeok was determined and caring
Gi Hun is very understanding
And then there's...
Player 101 who was the biggest A-hole
Player 212 who was a desperate biatch
Il-nam was amazing at first but ended up being a shitty person
Sang Woo was a also a piece of shit
According to their interview, these two actually became good friends on the set due to them being the same age. The most heartbreaking moment of the show in my opinion.
It's the fact this is her acting debut, she did an amazing job bruh. Hope to see her more in acting. Really like badass east Asian tomboys. You guys should check Sweet Home. That's amazing too.

It's so heartbreaking 😭
STOP
yep thats the most sad thing in the whole show
At least at the end the dude that won took care of her brother
ikr! SHE WAS 3RD BC OF THAT STUPID GUY! 😭😭😭😭
The fact that Sae-Byeok doesn't even make it out alive in the end makes this scene much more sad.
This made me cry, this comment. It’s so meaningful, yet so sad.
👍👍👍
I wouldn't judge her for what she did to her father. He deserved it. She was only a child.
I couldn't say it any better. Soulmates indeed.
It’s so sad that she sacrificed HER LIFE so sae byeok could live happily but she also died😭😭😭 i have a theory tho: when sae byeok died, it wasn’t announced that she’s eliminated. So maybe she didn’t die?

the moment that tears me apart whenever i watch it again is when jiyeong says ‘thanks for playing with me’ and the brief second when she pauses and her face creases in pain and her voice breaks a bit. its like she understands the gravity of what shes doing and is visibly grappling with what it means to give her life up and cant hide that fear and sadness or hold back that silent sob but still she puts on a genuine smile for saebyeok again. sorry for the essay but that single pause has been haunting my mind ever since i watched this ep like the amount of emotions conveyed in that single sentence is insane, but just in that brief second? yoomi is so talented. and also i am sending her my therapy bills

Thanks to them, thank you to Sae-Byeok and Ji-yeong for existing in this rotten world and bringing a glimmer of hope and love to it ❤️❤️
I cried so bad when Ji-Yeong said,” Its an honor... to be your partner.” Bruh im still thinking about it, its a permanent memory.
She actually said "Thanks for playing with me", the translation is off by a little.
I cried like a b***** during this scene. Knowing how hopeless ji yeong must have felt and how she LITERALLY sacrifices herself so that sae byeok could win and after they shot her I kept saying to myself "She's gone, She's never coming back." Like i litrally cried so hard, but sae byeok still died 😔
honestly, saebyeok was my favorite character and jiyeong was my second favorite😭😭
This is why Ji-yeong is my favorite character she has such a pure heart and soul 😭😭❤
The worst part is Ji died thinking Sae would live
Sae died knowing Ji sacrificed herself for her
The amount of emotions i felt while watching that episode is unexplainable. I love this series

Man this series is brutal but amazing
i just realized ji yeong didn't bother to had a happy dream because of her childhood circumtances but in the middle of their conversation she finally dream. she dream that she and seo byeok will leave the game and they go to the jeju island. when she realize that it will never happen, she gave up on her dream and give it to seo byeok. go out in the game alive, save her families and go to jeju island. when she says it my heart breaks into pieces. she's so good at acting i can feel what emotions does her character feels. i admit that this episode is my favorite because it touched my heart.
I can't- that smile after she knew what was going to happen broke my heart!💔
She deserved to live man😭 this character was so beautifully written ❣ that left us crying!🖤
Time will fly by...
money isn't everything, sometimes we don't understand we already have everything that really matters in life...

When she smiled that’s when it broke me…she was only there for 2 eps and made it worth it
The most emotional part was when Jiyeong just dropped the marble, she didn't TRY to win. She wanted Sae Byeok to live.
