  • Tunisian swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui won a gold medal in the men's 400-metre freestyle at Tokyo 2020. He is only the third swimmer in history to win an Olympic gold medal out of the 8th lane, the slowest qualifying lane. Enjoy watching Hafnaoui's road to gold!

      @@mohamedb737 Probably wall lanes gives disadvantages of not seeing fellow competitors and also waves and chop bounces from walls also may affect the athletes.
      If I'm not wrong , athletes with the slowest timings will be put in wall lanes.

      @@minilroy8774 I disagree somewhat. The not seeing competition part I agree on, but they can't see you either. Also the wave part, many surf the opponents wave now, it can be an added plus, but you have to know how.

    I was hoping for Mühlleitner at this race because I’ve raced him by myself already and I’ve been with him at some meets so I hoped for him that he would win this, but to than see Hafnaoui the guy nobody watched win made me probably even happier! What an amazing Olympic moment!

    What was incredible was that on the final 50 m, he was breathing away from the field so it was hard for him to know where he was until he touched the wall.
    He just saw that he was close enough and just dug deep in the final lap and came out on top. It was just amazing to watch honestly. 🔥🔥🔥

      There’s googles that increase your field of view since regular ones restrict your view. I also can’t speak on his mental strategy but me and a few people I know purposely breathed away from the field on some races the last leg because it can psych you out. I only didn’t do that if I knew I was really close to someone and needed to see where they were or if I swimming against a rival

      It’s always better to breathe to the side you feel more comfortable with in a race and just focus on swimming your own race.

      It was a great one but there were so many great races in Tokyo both in swimming and in the track. The best Olympics of my lifetime and I remember watching religiously as far back as 1980.

      @@joyjoyjoyful so many great races, great match ups, records, performances especially in swimming (which is my favorite) and track and field. The fact that spectators weren’t allowed didn’t change much for me. I wasn’t there. Also TV broadcast usually put background noises to simulate crowds so you really forget about it after a while. For me it’s all about the performances of the athletes and high level competitions. These Olympics were great. I also admit that waiting an extra year during a pandemic probably made it so that I would have watched just about anything.

    I remember watching this and thinking as the race unfolded how completely atypical it was - the leaders throughout the race were all in the outer lanes, and lanes 4 and 5 were the "laggards." That must have been a rude shock to them to look across and realize almost everyone else in the finals heat was ahead of them throughout the race!
