Trying TIG Welding for the First Time

- I've wanted to try my hand at TIG welding for awhile now and luckily had a friend willing to show me the ropes. I walked away from this first experience with more respect for people who have mastered it. It ain't easy. 💥

One of those crafts that I wished I had picked up when I was young. I am envious.
I did a course in welding in college, as part of my art major; made some art pieces I'm still proud of. It was a fun skill, but I haven't used it since. That was in 1998-ish, so more than a couple years ago. Maybe I should try those muscles again, see if there's any classes in my area. Learning a new skill (and/or dusting off an old one) is a good thing to do, now and then, to keep the mind limber and the creative juices flowing! It's so great that you have creative friends happy to share time and skills with you. Good luck on your journey!

Nice job with your TIG welding. Impressive! My dad was a welder his whole life and could not TIG, just Stick and MIG.

Great video! Some things I would like to highlight: love those graphics starting at 2:51, you could have let the video roll and let the guy explain the thing, but the graphics made it way more entertaining! Also, I really like how you really embrace safety, without making look like a hassle. Last, the vid is super smooth, and I loved the relaxed vibe, definitively I thought: I could do that!

If you don’t have a friend with the equipment, check out your local vo-tech school. Classes are cheap and they’ve got everything you need to practice and learn, including of course the instructor. 1 or 2 nights a week and you can pick up a new skill OR maybe decide it’s not something you’d like to pursue more, before making an expensive investment.

Looks great, always good to go outside your comfort zone and do things to learn from your mistakes. In my opinion the piece is very creative. The only thing I would do is take a round over router bit and finish the edges with it so it matches the three points and look very “canyon carving” ish if that makes sense. Would tie the piece to be more organic instead of just the prop points. Hope that helps in your creative journey!!!
Nice insight, thanks! I only learnt welding with a gas torch, not even standard electric. It was way before tig/mig existed🙂 so this taught me a lot!

Very nice video! Its great to see a someone start welding. I'd love to try it myself but have nobody around me who has the equipment, or skills to teach me. I think ill have to look into a more school like setting.

For your first time the welds looked good, tig feels like a lot at first but when you get the hang of it it is in my opinion the most relaxing way to weld just practice practice and have patience with your self you will be great. Some tips that helped me are to form a 90 degree relationship between the touch and filler, sometimes music is hood to help keep rhythm with the dabs,and if your part allows for it leave I tiny bit of stick out and use the stick out as filler. It always makes me smile when I see people pick up a tig torch for the first time. The one thing I would say is try not to get into to the habit of resting your 'tig torch hand' on the bench/table because you want that arm to travel consistently while dabbing your tig rod. Also a tip for you to nail the rhythm is to listen to music with a good beat, or listen to a metronome at 75 bpm. I hope that helps.

I can MIG weld all day. Never got comfortable with TIG welding.
I feel it. MIG felt considerably easier to get a hang of.
