Hard for any Beatle song to be overlooked, or underrated, but I think this song is their most overlooked song. Just a beautiful song, it just hits the spot, much like Please, Please Me does, or Penny Lane. Love how their voices intertwine in this song.
I feel the same. I’ll listen to the US released albums, and a song will start that makes me think,”I love that one. I just forgot about it.” I don’t love EVERY song they did, the WHITE ALBUM. has some that I don’t even remember the melody of. But I love most everything. They were(are) just the best ever.
Agree. In fact some friends of mine and I are thinking of covering this tune partly because it's relatively obscure. Classic harmonies and interesting chord changes! I've been a Beatles fan all my life but I only 'discovered' this song about 10 years ago.
…agree. But THIS song, unlike those you mention is not necessarily about love. It’s about the sanctuary of the mind, where time ceases and thoughts evaporate. Safe haven….. Snug harbor. …… At least the first verse is, which I found really cool and reflective early on
I thought that it was written in 1962 when he was about 21 or 22? The first Beatles' none love song was 'Nowhere Man' from the album 'Rubber Soul' in 1965, but this introspective song is almost a none love song apart from about 8 lines in it about thinking of someone he loves. No one else was writing introspective songs like this when this was written?!
@@sherlockholmeslives.1605 I'd love to know the history of this song. At first blush it seem very much John with the lyrics but the melody and the vocal phrasings scream Paul. Also Paul wrote lots of sad/ introspective lyrics so I'm not sure what to think about the origins of this song. What I do know is that this is an all time favourite. A real gem!!! I just love their two voices together. Amazing.

Just friggin brilliant!. Great song writing by Lennon. Outstanding vocals by John & Paul. Love the Major7 note (D#) played against the E major chord. Hauntingly beautiful. Way ahead of their time.
Charly García, one of the biggest , most complex and most loved musicians from Argentina said he owes his 'musical awakening' to that maj7th. Talk about Beatle magic!
As a teenager back then songs like "There's a place" seemed to cut right to your soul! As others have mentioned John & Paul's harmony on this tune is chilling especially when they come to the "and in my mind" part. The picture is from the Ed Sullivan Show in 1965.
This song wasn't as big as their other hit song's but it's a true gem 💎 . The Beatles had so many hits sometimes some of them went under the radar. Thank you girl was another.
Sure it’s live, you can hear the screaming. Their early songs had so much energy, a progressive increase in intensity, leading to a crescendo. No one else could do this. The Beatles forever.
Ringo's drumming is so Mersey Beat-style. Paul puts in the low bass note between "when I feel low (here) when I feel blue" that is so Beatle-esque. The harmonies are challenging. George's guitar seems a little out of tune (anyone else think so), but it just adds to the rawness and live-ness of the song. They were the greatest and getting greater. The lyrics express a teen boy's thoughts better than any other I know from the time. Who of us didn't have the things THE girl we were seeking say things that went around in our head. And the push back in the bridge "there'll be no sad tomorrows". Poetry! Honest and Brilliant! Paul was cute, but John had depth.
I agree. This is a great song. Overlooked. It's got a good harmony and fantastic words, that make you think. It has a deep meaning. I love this song. Top 10 favorite Beatles song of mine.
What I find amazing, apart from the musicality of their vocal harmonies on this, is the sheer power of their voices - Lennon down at the bottom end and McCartney at the top. This aspect has kept me enthralled for the past sixty years 🎶
I think what makes their live performances so great is that they were singing most of the time without any kind of monitors. With all the screaming going on to be able to keep time and sing as they did is just brilliant!!!
@@starlordman1017 You are correct. It was introduced on the Beatles' first released album PLEASE PLEASE ME. The first American album to carry the song was INTRODUCING THE BEATLES. I stand corrected. Thank you, Damian.
I really love this song, especially the studio version and here's why. When they are ending the last part of the first section, "And it's my mind, And there's no time..." right there, on the word "time", on the studio version, the bass drops to the low E, here, the bass just plays the root note, A flat. I so love that low E in the studio version. For me, it just gives it a certain haunting feeling, but a warm haunting. Nontheless, this live performance is awesome!
The reason this is probably my favorite beatles song is because everytime i get sad, or let's use the word blue or low, I come back to this song to know that I can always refer back to my happy place in my mind to take the stress off.
I got you!! You’re right, and I feel what you feel. Thanks for bringing that out..I play the bass and understand what you mean about the low E, thanks again!
