4:03 this flute is called "sopilka"..4:34 and that is the "drymba", also a Ukrainian folk instrument..thanks for your reaction!
The modern meaning of the word "Shum" is noise. But this song is over 1000 years old. I am not exaggerating. Shum is the name of the pagan god of the forest. The same name had dance- game that was part of the spring celebration. The dance consisted from phases of weaving and unweaving Shum with a change in the dancers pairs direction of movement and temp accelerating with each new verse. This clip was filmed on a regular smartphone in half a day. There is a layering of meanings in the video. Literal translation of the chorus: I`m sowing - blowing hemp seeds, sowing- blowing green ones. Long ago hemp was woven into fabric, today hemp is used for something else ))). From this that funny dancing dude. I hope this information will help you with a more accurate perception of this song.

When I was looking up the word on google translate, my translator was set to Croatian as I was recently reviewing Dora. And Shum came up as "noise" in Croatian as well. So that makes sense if it is a very old word!

This is my #1, not just of 2021, but of all time. It just hit me like a truck the moment I first heard it. I remember running to tell my boyfriend "wow you need to hear Ukraine's Eurovision entry this year!" And he loved it too. It's so utterly unique and special. It did lose a little something in the revamp but I still adored it.

The word Hypnotic is also what I thought of. Shum is a deep allegorical song taken from a Ukrainian folk song from the countryside. It is about the end of winter and doing a ritual calling to the spirits of Spring to come forth and renew the land, The literal words talk about taking of a fur coat, I suspect you may see some green color in their customs and staging to represent Spring.

Ι was not a fun of last years song. But this one is such a risk, and yes i am so excited about it.. Top ten for me..
I absolutely love this, probably more-so than Solovey which floated around in my top 5 (never formalised a list) last year. It's a very close second to France at the moment and I can't see many things beating it honestly.
As positive as I am about the package we have right now, I am so nervous about the three minute version. I feel like they're gonna cut out the very slow bit before the end which I feel is needed. It gives a break between the first bit of the song and the almost whirling dervish vibes that come in at the end, plus more opportunity to play the flutey thing. I'd probably cut one or two lines from each verse, but that could mess it up lyrically (not that anyone would know) which I don't think they will.
Overall, super excited, but equally nervous. Also, after the new version of Solovey came out on spotify last year they removed the old version so hopefully they keep the 4 minute cut up there this time.
hmmmm i dunno. i feel like that VERY long wait before the uptempo part is by far the most obvious place to cut. they can easily get it below 3 mins just by cutting that down alone.

Well, one may consider Kyiv with its cca 4 million citizens a small town in Ukraine... if they are from say China ))) The video was shot in the centre of Kyiv, on one of our three main 'mountains' :)

You’re honestly my favourite reactor... you’re always honest and although I actually rarely agree with you (finally I do) I like how you’re always honest. I wasn’t a massive fan of solovey tbh although I appreciated it... but I really like shum. I find it catchier and actually more interesting and unique. I’m kinda scared for their qualification though since Poland 2019 didn’t qualify and it’s sorta similar and Ukraine is in semi 1 this year (the hard semi from my guesses)... Ukraine won’t be in my top 5 this year for sure but they’ll be up there. My top so far:

I feel like this has a lot more life than Tulia - they did come across a bit robotic on stage. Also, they did actually qualify but that dumb juror entered her votes in wrong and so Belarus got in instead

I loved Solovey last year, it was in my top 5. This is a bit more risky and edgy, and like you I am not really sure yet whether I really love it. But it's so original and authentic, I'm really looking forward to hearing the 3-minute version.

Фольклористи вивчають її багато років, про "Шум" писали і Борис Грінченко, і Михайло Грушевський.
Як відзначає кандидат філологічних наук Лідія Козар у статті про "весняну обрядовість", у таких танцях-гаївках та веснянках, як "Шум", збереглися "риси анімістичного світогляду".
Анімізм - це віра у те, що всі предмети, а також тварини і рослини мають душу. Такими були вірування ще у первісних людей, пізніше вони оформилися у різні язичницькі культи, а згодом зникли чи видозмінилися під впливом християнства.

"Основа цієї пісні - обряд, який українці проводили навесні: шумом закликали весну. Це все проводилося колективно. Вважалося, що якщо щось робити разом, то загальне бажання обов'язково відбудеться", - пояснила "Фокусу" вокалістка Катерина Павленко.
"Вся українська обрядовість побудована на тому, що люди збиралися всі разом і вірили, що пісні мають магічну силу. Зокрема закликання весни - це було дуже важливе обрядо-дійство. Люди виходили, співали і таким чином вони вірили, що весна прийде швидше", - додала вона у розмові з "Радіо НВ".
Катерина Павленко також відзначила, що все це - вірування українського Полісся.
"Що стосується "Шуму", то цього року я дуже сильно заглибилася саме в обрядовість Чорнобильського Полісся і Полісся загалом. Там були зовсім інші обряди і трошки навіть інші вірування в українців. Це було дуже цікаво, вони надавали магічних сил кожному предмету, які їх оточували, і вони вірили, що по суті шум - це дух лісу", - розповіла співачка.

This feels like Go_A and Katya took the reaction to and experience with Solovey, and improved on the formula in pretty much every way. This still isn't a WINNER, but it is definitely a very strong entry. I *respect* this perhaps a BIT more than I enjoy it as music I'd consume (though imo it IS an earworm), but this is definitely a continuation of Ukraine's strong form.

Video actually was made in historical part of Kyiv. Urkovitsa hill. It isn’t heavily populated because of its relief. That’s why it isn’t seem like a piece of megapolis

Plot twist: They didn't cut some parts in the song, they almost changed it completely.
I wasn't expecting that kind of a revamp, it sounded almost like a new song to me, although it still has some elements from before, but still a good song and in my top 10 for sure. I am loving this type of music!

Shum is amazing!!! Love it!!!! So fun and gimmicky and yet so credible and authentic. (its like an updated version of a Swedish folk band I used to listen to called "Hedningarna" ) Although I prefer the first version it's still my personal favourite this year. Don't think it will win (juries are probably going to punish it) but if it did win I would be very happy! :)

I still struggle to understand what part of this sounds so weird and exotic to the Western Europeans. From Poland, Slovakia, all the way down to Greece and everything to the East of that line, so more than half of Europe is very familiar to this kind of vocals. Nothing weird at all, nothing alienating, nothing not accessible. Just a beautiful surprise of combining this common folk element with the electro rave sound!! Pure fun!!! Ukraine is here again with a seriously EPIC entry!! And it's definitely an ear-worm, it's addictive, it's ecstatic! And has a great video which is promising for the staging. Great song, great concept! The uniqueness and epicness factors are both guaranteed. I'll be surprised if this stays out of the top10 in the Grand Final.
Tom doesn't like folksy stuff. He just doesn't. Weird, being Irish and all. But I guarantee you that all the celtic parts of Europe will lift up at this. So will the germanic parts, from the memories of the dark forests where blonde giants ate roman legions 😁

As much as discotheque is in the movie sequel department, this is the empire strikes back of Go-A. This is A1 urban pagan dance in the snow on acid awesome. People may hate it but they'll never forget it.

Folksy elettronica with a steampunk twist (in the video): what's not to like? The lyrics are very pagan, too, and I love that! This and Russia's Manizha are my favourite at ESC this year! As an Italian I'm intentionally not mentioning Maneskin, because I can't vote for them. Anyway, Ukraine... wonderful song this year! Though I prefer the revamp (which has the steampunk element).

It's interesting you thought it was less accessible than Solovey. I thought it was way more accessible and easily approached by the general listener. Still, i love both songs so I probably have a different take.

The consensus is everyone likes it better than Solovey. Some of the reactions were wild (the two from Serbia), shady shae's is worth anything, never seen anyone stumped for words like this - he keeps trying to pause it to say it's shite but he can't, he's hypnotised lol ("fucking weird, man" ) .
The more I watch the video the more I love it, it's just mesmerising (borderline witchcraft, said Deban) : it's the same feeling I get with the Heilung videos, but post apocalyptic. And the guy doing his own Spring dancing bit is class. Apparently it would be representing the Tchernobyl anniversary, not covid, although it would be applicable too I suppose.
I knew Solovey was niche but this with the trance beat has caught on like wildfire. 2m views already.
A few big problems, the length of it, and seemingly the lyrics are trad so would need to be changed too. Doesn't matter as we won't know the difference but they'll have a big job to adapt it to the rules

@@ESCTom no it wasn't. I need to find my final ranking, I agonised for weeks between little big, the roop, gjon and Go-a. Pretty sure go-a lost out, but shum would have won that particular battle. Uno was a weak one for little big, I can't wait to see what they'll bring this time. I already find discotheque inferior and it won't be in my top 3 this year. But still a good one. Just not a great one.

im not gonna lie, it is better than solovey. its less jarring in the end at least. they will at least retain their 100% qualification rate. im still not the biggest fan of them but i can see them doing well with this.
also, will you do a review of the melodifestivalen semis?
im not 100% about them keeping their qualification rate, im still not sure how juries would respond to this and semi 1 could be super strong. But yea historically, Ukraine absolutely kill their staging.

@@ESCTom the song is not original. They would have to turn the folk arrangement on its head to address that while also delivering a considerably shorter version. I think it's safe to say the revamp will be noticeable.

Amongst this, Tulia and solovey, this is probably my favourite. Its not going to be in my playlist much but I love the experimentation of it. I think it will benefit a lot from having that loooooong build up in the middle snipped down.
I can see a lot of people not having a good reaction to this, but i can also see people have a strong positive reaction. Its going to be polarising. Will be super interesting to see how juries react
