Thank you so much for this video, the information is invaluable. I was given a cane for severe back issues a few years back, my cane was just delivered to my door, so, as a result, i was never told how to set it to the correct height or indeed use it correctly, which has unfortunately caused new issues in itself and i actually found it more painful to get around in some scenarios with the cane, than without. So, again, thank you for not only showing me how to use my cane correctly, but have it at the optimal height. A great video!
@@AskDoctorJo I'm looking for confirmation that I'm using two canes (simultaneously) correctly. I have been using a single cane for years, and I have a rollator, but it's very bulky and cumbersome. I have come to need support on both knees and I find using two canes both easier and less unattractive (than being a 40-something on a walker lol.) I've been using both the same way I use a single cane, but when going upstairs or uphill, I find planting both canes and "walking to" gives me more support. Is this fine? Also, BIG THANKS for introducing me to the small-footprint quad tip!! I will be ordering some as soon as I'm done with this comment!! P.S. I invented a "fashion cane" cover (I can't disclose publicly how it works because I don't have a patent... too poor!) so one can change the look of their cane everyday, but I have no idea whom to contact to get the ball rolling on said invention. Do you have any ideas who might be interested in producing such a thing?
You're welcome! I hope the quad tip helps. Yes, the way you mentioned should be fine. It's really about how stable it feels for you, so if it feels safer/stable going up and down stairs/hills that way, it should be fine. Unfortunately, I don't know who to contact about that.

17 here! I have very flexible joins which can cause a looot of problems. Lately I've had a lot of hip pain so o got one of my great gran's old canes and this helps so much!
I'm 26 and was upset at the prospect of using a walking stick as I thought it would make me look old, I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only one feeling this way. Thank you for the video
Great video. I have fibromyalgia syndrome and my balance is poor. I've been living with this disease for 16 years and I find that a cane really helps with the pain while walking and that I can walk safer. Some days I have to use my walker, which was recommended by my physical therapist. Before I got a cane, people thought I was drunk and falling was a problem. There is no shame in using a cane.
i just got a cane cause i have unknown leg issues. i have been on and off limping for years and finally got a cane. this video has been super helpful!!
Rarely does an individual speaking into a camera actually project "connected cognitive presence" as if they were directly conversing with the viewer. I have found DrJo at a time in life where my future mobility is in question and I am in great pain walking these days. If you don't use your leg muscles you begin to lose your leg muscles. I must have developed "terminal curmudgeonitis" so that I dismiss "experts" too frequently and too quickly, yet DoctorJo has such warm, friendly presence in her presentations that I have become a "patient(a) patient(n)." Her personality and persona should be used to educate physicians on bedside manner. She confirms my philosophy, Eve was not an afterthought, Eve was an improvement!
I’m 16 and broke my foot when I was 11. It was never set properly and now walking is extremely painful if I walk for any amount of distance. I recently got a cane and was too scared to use it for fear of making something worse. This was so helpful!! Thank you 😊
I fell, broke my right hip, and had a hip replacement eight weeks ago. I’m doing well and I feel it’s time to graduate to the quad cane my sister gave me. I took a few steps today but my sister told me to hold it on the “good side.” Your video is a godsend!
This helps me so much. I’m 19 with a spinal cord injury and due to covid and other chronic illnesses I e not been able to go to physical therapy. My cane comes in tommorow and wanted to do more research ❤️
Same reason I'm here! Have been using a walker for two months but I feel I have so much more mobility, less pain (lower back). I do however, feel that because I've been home mostly, I've done the "furniture walk" She mentioned 😆. The few times I've gone out with the use of the walker, most recently, it's become somewhat of a limiting tool that I feel I have to carry to feel safe, which I do, and it does but then it's hard to reach out and open a door or go up/down the 4 steps outside my apt. So in the hopes of trying to get back to normal, I'm looking into buying a cane 🤔
Thanks for the great video. I just bought my first cane, and now I can use it more confidently. I was holding the cane in the wrong hand, so I switched and it was immediately better.
I am thankfull that I swallowed my pride after I watched your video... I am 53 and have suffered from severe sciatica for decades on and off... After my 2nd MRI in 3 years my L4/5 discs have gone fron 3 mm to 7 mm, and the pain is too much to have a 'normal' life. Thus I am up for surgery, L4/5 prolapse and L drop foot, I fall often...painfully...so I am off to get some titaniun and dead man bones in my back lol! I am a funiture walker both at home and at my studio... with stragitically placed chairs for myself...I have avoided a cane, but bought one last night and actually went to a green house today...first time in years! I am paying for it now (in pain) but I MADE it and had fun! I am happy to have better balance and even stamina! Thank you Dr. Jo!
@Twila Nesvold Thank you for sharing your experience. ( I see your comment is a few years old, but I still wanted to comment.) Oh my gosh, you've endured alot. I understand how you feel; everything you said resonates with me, except the having surgery part on the back/spine. Although I have been through a few major cancer surgeries in my 30s. I also have fibromyalgia, arthritis, neuropathy, etc I'm currently 52 and have been living and working with chronic pain for more than 30 years. On *very* *rare* occasions, I will have a decently good day ... try to go out and do as much as possible.. and pay for it dearly for 24-48hrs. My sciatica and DDD pain send me through the ceiling more often than not. My right foot has a drag to it, my gait is off, etc. *I'm going to break down and buy my first cane.* 🙈 *I've been suffering and stumbling around too long trying to fake it like nothing's wrong.* Peace ✌🏽💜💪🏽
My Orthopedic & Balance Specialist Doctor just sent me this video to learn how to walk with a cane. He recommended the quad cane for me since I’m starting to fall often. This video is very helpful as I really couldn’t understand why I needed to use my other hand, instead of using the hand on injured side. Now I get it!
This was very informative. I've been living with fibromyalgia for over 4 yrs and I get a lot of pain in my lower back, hips and feet (especially on my bunions which are already painful). And the pain is worse on my left side. On bad days I walk with a slight limp especially when my bunion hurts and on ok days I walk normally. I have issues with balance but not bad enough to make me fall Do I need a cane?
Trini warrior, I also have fibromyalgia have had it for about 18 years now, lots of pain in back, hips, knees feet and pretty much everywhere, I have had a folding cane for years just for in the house, I bit the bullet 2 years ago and brought a pair smart crutches for use when I'm out and continued with the stick and home for occasional use, I am now needing to use it to weight alot more and I'm researching getting one of the quad canes and this video has made me certain that would be much better for me. I say go for it and get one anything that helps can only be a good thing, even if it only lessens the pain a little it will be fantastic. I hope you find something that works for you. From one fibro warrior to another
I know it’s way later. But as a fellow Spoonie. I heard another Spoonie say something the other day. If you wonder if you need a mobility aid, you need a mobility aid. People who don’t need one don’t wonder if they need one. 💝
I had a stroke 15 years ago secondary to a primary brain tumor. I eventually was able to walk without an assistive device, but as I've aged my balance and mobility have declined. I found doctor Jo's instructional videos very useful in helping me to begin the process of regaining more independence by starting again with cane walking.
Just got my first cane due to hip pain and was only going to use when I absolutely have to but after watching your video I realise that I should use it when we go out for walks. Thanks for the advice!
Great! Now I can walk around with my sprained ankle. I was using the cane incorrectly and it was not helping at all. Now after applying the way you have given here I can now walk around safely, and really supporting my sprained ankle.
I'm 13 and don't knoe why ive been feeling massive pain in my legs ever since i could remember. I got my first cane today because my dad said it might help so this video was informative!
Thank you so much I just started using a cane full time and wasn't told anything on how to walk with it. I have been stumbling around and sitting more because of it. I followed your instructions and did much better. I need to get my strength up and learn to walk right. Could you do a video on the correct way to walk
You're welcome! Yes, I have a video where I talk/demonstrate walking correctly at the end: www.askdoctorjo.com/total-hip-replacement-posterior-approach
I'm 27 and I have EDS and POTS, three days ago I started occupational therapy and the therapist said I would propably need to use a cane since I've been having a lot of falls, especially at work . I'm still waiting for them to call me to do the tests on which cane is better. This video has been very enlightening
Thank you Dr Jo, this is a great video and helped me much more than trying to make sense of a web page. I have developed posterior tibialis tendinitis and walking is extremely painful so I got a cane to help get around and was using it 100% incorrectly. Thank you again for this clear and concise instruction. ❤️
Patients often tell me they don't want to use a cane because it will make them look old. And I always say: If you fall and break something, you'll need a lot more than a cane, and then you'll definitely look old :-)
Is it appropriate to use a cane if my legs have the bad habit of 'switching off' when I walk up the stairs or sometimes even when walking normally...I am still 17...my legs are of different sizes (thickness and muscle mass).
AskDoctorJo thanks for explaining. I had Microfracture surgery and meniscus repair about 7 weeks ago with. NO weight bearing and I’m just now learning to walk again. I’ve gone from a walker and now the cane. But..... I’ve been using it on my injured side lol I knew it felt awkward. And is the reason I found you thanks for the video
It’s not that I think it will make me look old, but I think people will judge me, I have spina bifida and a lot of walking issues and I think I should get a cane soon. I’m 11 years old and I go to school so I think people will judge me but I fall alot
Thank you, using cane for the first time at age 73 and your video was most helpful. Need more practice though! Have had L5 S1 lumbar radiculopathy for 20 years. Three cortisone shots over the years have had mixed results. Have had significant pain when I sat more than a few minutes for a few years, especially when I drove. The pain when I tried to sit became severe a couple weeks ago, very severe. Thank God my Doctor referred me to a Physical Therapist this time. He had my diagnosis within a few minutes of my exam. My gluteal muscle was significantly atrophied from the long term neuropathy. None of the MD's I saw recognized this. I do the exercises like religion and already have nice improvement. Thank you again for this video and cheers to all the wonderful Physical Therapists and the truly wonderful work you all do!
@@AskDoctorJo Thank you! I still have significant pain when I sit more than a few minutes. Do you have any suggestions of how I may be able to sit somewhat comfortably without damaging the newly strengthening muscle? I've been told not to use ice due to restricting blood flow from the cold. Thank you for your input. Tim
You're welcome! There are some seat cushions called coccyx cushions that might help take the pressure off the area. I have reviewed several if you want to check them out. Here is one that I've reviewed: amzn.to/2THg8dh (affiliate link)
I just got a quad cane I have sciatica and fibromyalgia and neuropathy my feet are bad as well as balance this will help me use it safely thanks a bunch pain sucks ...
Thanks so much for these cane videos, it helps give me the confidence to step out with one. Also, thanks for clarifying the scenarios when a cane is appropriate. It helped me humble myself and see my situation for what it is ❤
I have Ankylosing spondylitis and have been using a cane wrong for 2 years now, and not a single one of my 4 doctors have noticed or told me. Thank you so much for this video, I will make the change immediately.
I was in a motorcycle accident and I heavily rely on my cane to help my balance. I would have a hard time without it. I have learned so much from your videos. Thank you
Thank you so much for this instruction video. I broke my neck two years ago and have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Normally, I use a walker, but my daughter is getting married at the end of this month and I want to use a cane instead. I have a Quad Cane, but my PD gait makes it difficult to walk with it. Your video and practice should help so much. I want my daughter to be proud that her dad can walk her down the aisle to her husband.
Very informative. As a stroke survivor, I’ve obv had no choice but to hold a (quad) cane with the hand opposite my weak leg, but I didn’t know this was actually the “correct” way to use one.
Thanks Doctor Jo. I tried a cane today and found it much less painful to walk (Sacroilliac Dysfunction and L5-S1 fusion). Walking is cruel for me but my Doctor has never suggested I use a cane, it was my own research that has made me decide to try one. From Australia
Thanks! Your explanation of gate pattern helped me finally use cane on the correct side. Knew I was doing it wrong just could never make.mind body connection til now.
I found your video prior to having total knee replacement, and now that I am eight days past TKR my husband and I were talking about canes and the basics. I shared your video and so both he and I are on the same page. PT starts today. Cane and quad rubber change out base coming soon and it’s okay since I have another week with my walker. 😊
So dr. Jo, I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you for all the time and work you put into these videos-you have no idea how helpful you have been to us. Thumbs up and I subscribed.
Pulled my groin and got a quad walking cane online. I'm pretty weak from it on one side so it's good to know about the second pattern on the quad cane. I'm thankful this is online because i never knew how to use one.
Thank you, DoctorJo. This was very helpful as I must admit I was a little confused as to whether or not I was using the walking stick on the correct side. It's easy to fall into the wrong habit or pattern.
Thank you for your video, I’m 34 & I’ve been “making do” with OCD in my left Talus for 5yrs so I didn’t look old lol... but lately it’s become incredibly painful and nearly impossible to be mobile. I look forward to having some relief soon.
I'm a total furniture walker lol super comfortable in my own home but the moment I step outside I'm like a drunk. 27 and finally getting a cane, had an ICH 3 years ago and always leaned on family/friends/walls for balance
Thank you for this, recently I got my first ever cane. I'm 16, I suffer from severe chronic conditions and I don't know how to use a cane so this definitely helped
I'm recuperating from a broken ankle. I've only just started partial weight bearing, but they said i can wean to a quad cane when i feel ready. Except...no-one told me HOW to use it, lol. Thank you for that :)
29 just broke down and got a cane last night. Took a steering column to the side of my left knee almost 9 years ago and have been limping off and on ever since. This time it has been much worse than usual enough I went to the doctor saw an orthopedic and am scheduled for MRIs on both knees. I'm hoping my bad knee between a brace and the cane will have less of a chance of giving out on me.
Thank you dr. Joe this is the first time I'm seeing your channel and it's very informative and I love how you actually show & demonstrate everything. My first time using a cane this video was Very helpful😀😁😊❤
little bit late to the video but! im struggling with chronic pain in my ankle, and its very painful and uncomfortable to walk. i always lean on my healthy side, and am researching canes to get pressure off my hurting foot. thank you for this video, its very informative.
Used a single point cane after hip replacement. It worked but I was always having to figure when/how to park it. Two years ago, after a shattered femur and transitioning from wheelchair and walker, I used a quad cane with wider feet than the one in this video. They recommended that style when I was in in-Patient Rehab. It was so much easier to walk with. Granted, I was using it differently than I did with hip replacement, but it was still easier to use and I felt much safer. Plus, as I was getting closer to stop using it, I could let it go while standing at the sink and it ‘parked’ itself.
I’m 13 and have a lot of health issues. Mobility. I’m currently getting diagnosed with whatever it is as I have a significant family history in different Arthritis’s,osteoporosis,cancers,etc.. and I developed a horrible limp. I’m trying to get a cane right now, from what I learned? It will help..right?
Thank you! Very informative and well presented. I'm awaiting hip replacement surgery. My cane isnt enough, its not a quad foot, and its not enough support. How can I tell if a quad cane would work, or I should just stick to my walker?
Thank you. I picked up my quad cane at a medical supply store. It was ackward. Watching your video I can see why. The cane was on the wrong side. This was how the sales person told me to use it.
Hi Dr. Jo, Thank you for your quick response. I am seeing a PT now. I just got clearance on Monday from my surgeon to start bearing weight. So when I went to the PT on Wednesday they started working on it. They said there is also some kind of bar that can be attached to my walker and extends upward so I can hold on to the bar instead if pushing my full weight into the side hand grasps. Thank you for your encouragement. I am really hoping to feel better soon.
I've recently had surgery on my left foot. Haglund's Resection w/reattachment of Achilles tendon. I'm post-op only 10 weeks, and am still in an air cast, but have been advised by my dr. to start walking some without the aircast on. I have been trying to use my mom's cane. I keep it on my right side, and just like you said, it moves with my left food, the injured foot. However, I still feel like I'm putting as much pressure/weight on my post-op foot regardless of the cane. Am I doing something wrong? Does the cane not try to take some of the weight off of my injured foot? It feels like if I had it on my left side, that when I walked, I can put most of the weight on the cane, rather than my foot. This feels better. But using your recommendations, I am doing it wrong. So I'm still trying, keeping the cane on my right side, for better outcomes on my left post-op foot. Thanks, Dr. Jo!
I really like my that cane cane with both types of feet. I can easily switch it out for what I need and the cane itself folds (4 prices). It was hard to find a high quality cane like that but worth it the time and money put into it. I have a cane for 2 reasons: -Permanent damage from old injury -Severe pain from standing for long periods of time, making walking painful and difficult. I don’t need it 24/7 but I do have to carry it in my bag with me so it’s there when I need it. The quad foot is a little taller than the regular one so I do have adjust the height when I switch it out
Also, more importantly, would you please give me any advice on how to help alleviate the pain I'm experiencing from using the walker? Not only am I in pain but I am fatigued like never before. This is in addition to my comment below. Thank you!
Unfortunately, I am not sure what would help without getting to see you. That's why it would be best to go see a PT in person. It might be an easy fix, but I really would just be guessing without getting to evaluate you. Do you have access to a pool? It is a great place to get in and exercise both your leg and arm without the impact, not swimming, but actually doing exercises in the pool.
I have a lot of pain in my knees and sometimes my ankles (and other joints, but these are the relevant ones), and I can't handle standing on the joints that hurt when they hurt a lot. I often limp and such, should I talk to my doctor about getting some sort of mobility aid? I'm worried because i'm only 14 and would look weird with a cane, but I really can't walk normally most of the time anymore.
you talked about balance a lot, and my balance is perfect. I'm an occasional skateboarder and ice skater, and do yoga with my mom. I'm not sure if that means I should be asking for something other than a cane, since it's only the pain bothering me.
I would talk with the doctor about this in general. If you have pain in multiple joints, it could be a whole body issue that the doctors need to figure out with testing. Definitely go talk with your doctor. Good luck.
Minja Arsić I'm 15 and use a cane. Ik it feels wierd and you may think you look stupid at first, I did. After a while it basicly becomes invisible. U won't notice or care. No one else will either. It might help u to get one. If you need someone to talk to you can contact me
I used a cane for standing, lower back issues. Then I discovered using it to walk took the pressure off my arthritic toe. I use it on the same side as the toe because it's the bent toe push I need the help with. I've tried the opposite side and it's not as much help. GP was OK with it, haven't talked much arthritis or PT with Rheumy yet.
+Myk63 If that's what helps, but hopefully it won't make other things start hurting because when you use it that way, you get out of your normal gait pattern. Good luck.
+AskDoctorJo Thanks. So far just my wrist when I'm leaning too hard. The cane has taught me to walk without tweaking my big toe so I haven't been needing it as much.
Hi doc Jo,thank you so much for making this video it gives me a lot of information about using the cane..as well as the correct way of using it. Im 38 yrs old. And ive been having knee pains but they do come and go. I was diagnosed years ago that i have a Degenaration of chrondo mallacia knee patella. And now that i have sciatica. Even the doctor didnt mention or advised me to use a stick..just want to ask do i have to use know a walking stick?
I think if it helps relieve the pain when you are walking, it's worth trying one. Have you been to any physical therapy yet? If not, I would recommend that as well. Good luck.
I had debrisment surgery on my left ankle and the following day, while using the walker because I was nonweight bearing, I fell over and broke two toes on the other foot. Today, after a month, I was told to use a tripod cane, wear a brace and start walking. Really? I'm supposed to know how to do this? I was supposed to magically know how to shower and function in a wheel chair, too. You probably saved me from further injury with your very helpful video. Thank you!
Yes, my ENT gave me all if the tips & I've been faithful to stick to them for 2+ years. Extreme low sodium, zero caffeine. Lasix 40 mg. He performed an inner ear perfusion in 2011. Only made me worse with vertigo. I keep a loud roar in ear 24/7. I take diazepam 5 mg as needed. I've been researching and read something about Crisis if Tumarkin. Weird name but it stated some Ménière's patients have this, aka drop attacks. You'll never know how much I appreciate your replies!
praisedalord58 I wish I had some great answer for you, but it sounds like you are doing all the right things. There are PTs who are vestibular rehab specialists. It might be worth trying to find one in your area, and see if they can help. Good luck!
I'm 30. Got in a bad cycling accident 12 years ago. And my knees are finally starting to feel it. Also my back slightly. I've heard of canes being Able to help with my joint pain. I had a nice root wood cane but I am considering a better more medical one but I don't want to look old just yet lol.
Thank you for that quick reply doc. Yes i have tried physio before. But its still hurts though im taking pain killers regulary it helps a bit...thank you.
I’ve never had a serious injury with my knee but if I walk around to much or stand to long my right knee starts hurting. The pain can last a few days and doesn’t happen on my left side. Would a cane be helpful and by extension would it be okay to use a cane if the pain isn’t crippling?
What direction does the top of the cane face? Do I hold my cane with the strap on the handle facing forward or backward? I find it more comfortable having it facing forward. Please let me know and thank you.
Hello, I just had quad tendon repair of a knee, which will require straight leg brace for 2 months. Weight-bearing will be OK in later weeks; my issue is (unrelated) Achilles tendinosis (runner) that's really aggravated with any weight-bearing. As an MRI tech who runs all over the place, crutches when I return to work won't cut it. I'm considering a (quad?) cane and heel lift to take the weight off. Thoughts on whether this will suffice? Thx
Thanks for the video! I'm finally getting to address my hip dysplasia, and just finished some PT. I'm waiting to see an orthopedic surgeon and get imaging of the hip joints, as I still have pain especially with extended periods of walking and standing. I'm thinking of getting a cane for times I go out and know I'll be walking a lot, for the extra support when I start to hurt. I'm going to talk to the orthopedic surgeon about it, but do you think using a cane before I get sore would help me keep going longer? And with bilateral hip dysplasia, which side would I keep the cane on? I assume opposite of the worse hip/leg.
You're welcome! Yes, I think it will help keep you going longer. You are right, if you have a side that's worse, use on the opposite side. Otherwise, I would say use it in your non-dominant hand, so you have your dominant hand free to use for other things. Good luck.
Hi Dr Jo. I'm 54 years old, I have advanced osteoarthritis on both knees, both hips, and SI joints. Plus Degenerative disc disease and bulged discs on my spine worst in lower back. My doctor is giving me cortisone injections every 2 months on my kness. But i told him im in so much pain grttjng up, or seating and i walk holding onto walls or parked cars. Im tall enough so toilets. Sofas and chairs are low for me.. my doctor still tells me.i dont need a cane.😢 so I wonder what cane us best for me, at least to help me for a few month meanwhile I organize my life to have hips and knees replaced..thank you

Some days I have to use my walker, which was recommended by my physical therapist. Before I got a cane, people thought I was drunk and falling was a problem. There is no shame in using a cane.
Thanks.
No shame at all. I’m a stroke survivor and was once barred entry (no pun intended) to a venue because the bouncer mistook me as drunk.
i just got a cane cause i have unknown leg issues. i have been on and off limping for years and finally got a cane. this video has been super helpful!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for your kind words! I hope you are able to find some relief and feel better :-)
I’m 16 and broke my foot when I was 11. It was never set properly and now walking is extremely painful if I walk for any amount of distance. I recently got a cane and was too scared to use it for fear of making something worse. This was so helpful!! Thank you 😊
You're welcome.
I’m 17 and have POTS (and an Achilles tendon injury rn), and I just got my first cane and this was helpful! thank you for this video!
You're welcome!
You're welcome.
Jo!
Twila Nesvold You're welcome! I am glad it is helping. Thanks for sharing your story, and good luck!
@Twila Nesvold
Thank you for sharing your experience.
( I see your comment is a few years old, but I still wanted to comment.)
Oh my gosh, you've endured alot.
I understand how you feel; everything you said resonates with me, except the having surgery part on the back/spine. Although I have been through a few major cancer surgeries in my 30s.
I also have fibromyalgia, arthritis, neuropathy, etc
I'm currently 52 and have been living and working with chronic pain for more than 30 years.
On *very* *rare* occasions, I will have a decently good day ... try to go out and do as much as possible.. and pay for it dearly for 24-48hrs.
My sciatica and DDD pain send me through the ceiling more often than not. My right foot has a drag to it, my gait is off, etc.
*I'm going to break down and buy my first cane.* 🙈
*I've been suffering and stumbling around too long trying to fake it like nothing's wrong.*
Peace ✌🏽💜💪🏽
I’m 21 and walk with a cane. Just had my second scope done on my left knee. This video is very informative
Thanks.
Senpai noticed me!
Just got my first cane due to hip pain and was only going to use when I absolutely have to but after watching your video I realise that I should use it when we go out for walks. Thanks for the advice!
You’re welcome!
Perfect advice. Just what I needed to know about cane height, opposite side to injury, and cane movement. Thanks!!
You're welcome!
Great! Now I can walk around with my sprained ankle. I was using the cane incorrectly and it was not helping at all. Now after applying the way you have given here I can now walk around safely, and really supporting my sprained ankle.
I'm glad it helped. Good luck.
I hope it helps.
You're welcome.
Patients often tell me they don't want to use a cane because it will make them look old. And I always say: If you fall and break something, you'll need a lot more than a cane, and then you'll definitely look old :-)
Is it appropriate to use a cane if my legs have the bad habit of 'switching off' when I walk up the stairs or sometimes even when walking normally...I am still 17...my legs are of different sizes (thickness and muscle mass).
patients must understand that using a cane is for their own safety
@@marissanikki4335 people wear glasses in your class. They are in the same boat as you. Honestly, people can mean, but there are many good people.
Excellent instruction for a newbie. Thorough without being too long. Good basics.
You're welcome, and thanks! I'm glad you were able to get the help you needed from your physical therapist. Good luck with your continued recovery.
You're welcome.
Thanks so much for these cane videos, it helps give me the confidence to step out with one. Also, thanks for clarifying the scenarios when a cane is appropriate. It helped me humble myself and see my situation for what it is ❤
You're welcome!
I have Ankylosing spondylitis and have been using a cane wrong for 2 years now, and not a single one of my 4 doctors have noticed or told me. Thank you so much for this video, I will make the change immediately.
You're welcome.
I was in a motorcycle accident and I heavily rely on my cane to help my balance. I would have a hard time without it. I have learned so much from your videos. Thank you
You're welcome.
Great video, I'm 15, and I have back pain from scoliosis, I just got a cane recently, and it helps immensely
I'm 25 just got my first cane for my Ms so this was super helpful thank you
You're welcome.
im 18 and i have to use a cane to get around no matter what. They definitely work for no Balance with a bad back.
i'm 14 and just got my cane. bad leg here and atrocious balance. my cane is really pretty tho so that's really good!!
I'm 16, I have my cane, but I need one that's better fitted, it's too long for me
@Flabbergastered Dude Have been there dude, I still feel like it since it hurts to walk tours, but I do my best, stay strong
You're welcome. I know she will be super proud of you no matter what :-) Good luck.
You're welcome. Good luck.
Sunds like your doctor wasn't on the ball in this instance.
@@julianlewis1792 yes he was way off. CT scan showed stenosis at L3-L4, compressing sciatic nerve. He is finally taking me seriously re my pain
Thanks! Your explanation of gate pattern helped me finally use cane on the correct side. Knew I was doing it wrong just could never make.mind body connection til now.
You're welcome! I'm glad it helped.
I found your video prior to having total knee replacement, and now that I am eight days past TKR my husband and I were talking about canes and the basics. I shared your video and so both he and I are on the same page. PT starts today. Cane and quad rubber change out base coming soon and it’s okay since I have another week with my walker. 😊
Good luck with your continued recovery.
So dr. Jo, I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for all the time and work you put into these videos-you have no idea how helpful you have been to us.

AskDoctorJo I agree they are great assistants!!!
I am 23 and am getting my first cane tomorrow, this was so helpful! Thank you!
You're welcome!
Pulled my groin and got a quad walking cane online. I'm pretty weak from it on one side so it's good to know about the second pattern on the quad cane. I'm thankful this is online because i never knew how to use one.
Thank you! This was helpful. I have an ankle injury and the cane wasn’t helping until your video.
You're welcome! Good luck with your recovery.
Thank you, DoctorJo. This was very helpful as I must admit I was a little confused as to whether or not I was using the walking stick on the correct side. It's easy to fall into the wrong habit or pattern.
You’re welcome. Good luck.
Thank you for your video, I’m 34 & I’ve been “making do” with OCD in my left Talus for 5yrs so I didn’t look old lol... but lately it’s become incredibly painful and nearly impossible to be mobile. I look forward to having some relief soon.
You're welcome.
I'm a total furniture walker lol
super comfortable in my own home but the moment I step outside I'm like a drunk. 27 and finally getting a cane, had an ICH 3 years ago and always leaned on family/friends/walls for balance
Thank you so much for your tutorial on using a cane. This has REALLY helped me!
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
Thank you for this, recently I got my first ever cane. I'm 16, I suffer from severe chronic conditions and I don't know how to use a cane so this definitely helped
You're welcome.
I'm recuperating from a broken ankle. I've only just started partial weight bearing, but they said i can wean to a quad cane when i feel ready. Except...no-one told me HOW to use it, lol. Thank you for that :)
You're welcome. Good luck with your recovery!
I just started to use one fourlegged cane at home, outdoor I gave up my wheelchair and I use two crutches. Good advices.
Thanks. Good luck.
Thanks Dr. Jo. Everything you said, I've experienced. Only learning now, its ok to use a cane in spite of my young 58 years young
You're welcome.
Thank you dr. Joe this is the first time I'm seeing your channel and it's very informative and I love how you actually show & demonstrate everything. My first time using a cane this video was Very helpful😀😁😊❤
You're welcome, and thanks.
little bit late to the video but! im struggling with chronic pain in my ankle, and its very painful and uncomfortable to walk. i always lean on my healthy side, and am researching canes to get pressure off my hurting foot. thank you for this video, its very informative.
You're welcome.
The quad canes definitely have more stability.
Thanks for information going to start using cane the right way keep well everyone could be a lot worse
Thanks dr. for this useful video. I had been looking for such video for a long time.
You're welcome.
thanks for that,clear and concise
You're welcome.
Thanks Dr. Jo. Very good video.

I just started using a cane for my arthritis in my ankle I’m only 29 war veteran I never knew that armor would mess up my body like this
Thanks for your service to our country. Good luck. LORD bless you and yours.🙏
Thank you! Very informative and well presented. I'm awaiting hip replacement surgery. My cane isnt enough, its not a quad foot, and its not enough support. How can I tell if a quad cane would work, or I should just stick to my walker?
You're welcome! If you can go to a drug store, they might have some you can try out around the store.
fantastic well done
and thank you
very few people that use a cane use it properly (thx Dr. House)

But House uses his cane correctly.
Great video! I have M.S and just got a cane. This was very informative
Thanks! I hope it helps.
I have fibromyalgia, and I’ve been wondering if I should get a mobility aid as I can barely do anything. This video is very helpful, thank you!
You're welcome!
Thank you. I picked up my quad cane at a medical supply store. It was ackward. Watching your video I can see why. The cane was on the wrong side. This was how the sales person told me to use it.
You're welcome. Hopefully you will get the hang of it quickly.
You're welcome! That is great to hear the PT has some good ideas for you. Hopefully you are on your way to a quick recovery!! Good luck.
Thnx so much it was very helpful info for me 🍀🌷
You're welcome.
I am 27, a former marathon runner, and am now needing to use a cane to get around safely. Thank you for this video, it is helpful.
You're welcome.
Thanks, Dr. Jo!
This video was so helpful. Thank you!
You're welcome!
I really like my that cane cane with both types of feet. I can easily switch it out for what I need and the cane itself folds (4 prices). It was hard to find a high quality cane like that but worth it the time and money put into it. I have a cane for 2 reasons:
-Permanent damage from old injury
-Severe pain from standing for long periods of time, making walking painful and difficult.
Good luck.
Have u tried asking doctor about tigger point injection with idocaine?
Minja Arsić I'm 15 and use a cane. Ik it feels wierd and you may think you look stupid at first, I did. After a while it basicly becomes invisible. U won't notice or care. No one else will either. It might help u to get one. If you need someone to talk to you can contact me
I’m 11 and getting a cane soon😓Super scared
Very helpful video, thank you so much!
Thanks, and you're welcome!
I have CP and I used quad canes when I was younger. (they were bigger though) I had to use two and I used the two step method.
+nerdieone1 That is definitely one too. I only recommend learning that on in a clinic since it takes a little more practice to perfect!! Good luck!
+Myk63 You're welcome. Glad it is getting better!
Good luck.
Thank you! This video was very informative for me.
+Krystal Lance You're welcome! Good luck!
Thank you!
+Anna O'Day You're welcome! Good luck, and stay safe!!
Awesome video!!
Good luck!
Thank you!
praisedalord58 You're welcome! I hope you find some relief soon!
Thanks this helped me a lot.

I'm 18 and hyper mobile, got my first cane today :3
You're welcome.
Hi, what is the best kind of cane to use when you also have wrist pain from arthritis?
I’ve never had a serious injury with my knee but if I walk around to much or stand to long my right knee starts hurting. The pain can last a few days and doesn’t happen on my left side. Would a cane be helpful and by extension would it be okay to use a cane if the pain isn’t crippling?
Thank you. Broke my first bone, a toe. I tried to walk through goodwill to figure out how to use a cane on my own. I should have watched this first.
You're welcome.
Thanks, this really helped!
+Sarah Bellum You're welcome! I'm glad they helped.
My 75 year old dad will be getting a knee replacement. Should he get a walking cane or walking stick for daily use?
What direction does the top of the cane face? Do I hold my cane with the strap on the handle facing forward or backward? I find it more comfortable having it facing forward. Please let me know and thank you.
You can hold it which ever way is more comfortable for you. Some have a molded handle, where it's fitted for hand placement, but most don't.
Great video. I haven't been able to find how to use a cane when both knees are bad.
Thanks.
Thx
Hi, Jo! Is it possible to treat degenerative disc disease with physical therapy?
Good luck.
Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
Hi Jo
I've been using my cane on the right side where the sciatic is. Could this make me in more pain and soreness.
Here's another video where I talk about the correct way to use a cane: ua-cam.com/video/sFMEmG6YKDI/v-deo.html
