I did an experiment with my third graders once with different colored plates with petroleum jelly on them. Sure enough, the yellow attracted the most whiteflies. Interestingly, the colors that had yellow in them (green, Orange) also attracted just a few, but the colors with no yellow at all attracted almost none.
Danny, you can also use worm castings to deter white fly. White flies don't like the taste of worm castings and will go away. Just incorporate a little worm castings around your vegetable plants and white fly and aphids will leave your plants alone. :-)
Will it work on politicians? How about bad relatives and life insurance agents? Man I could clean out the bad stuff with That! You just made my day!! Greetings from Perth Ontario!!!
My guess about the purpose of the dish washing soap: The jelly just makes the insect stick to the cup, then I guess it would eventually die. Some might struggle and break free. Dish soap works as an insecticide because 1) it coats the insect body and suffocates them or 2) in cases of hard shells, it dissolves a bit of their protection which helps kill them. Either way, Miss Wanda is painting portraits of sunshine at 6:30 am with Dawn. I think it's a sign...
Danny I have done been down this entire Road we had most of our crops wiped out the last 2 years by whiteflies. I tried everything organic first and then went to pesticides we have spent thousands and thousands of dollars fighting whiteflies we finally found the solution it is a fairly new product called sivanto it is very selective it will not harm beneficial insects like worms and bees and others it only targets harmful insects. Like whiteflies the drawback is this is something new and it still has a new price, 325$ a gallon. But after two years of battling whiteflies it done away with them in seconds. It seems to me to be a great product something we wish they had been making all along instead of the poisonous crap that kills everything. Oh by the way this is David from Old South I changed the channel name to match the Facebook group
This is such a great idea! It's not only effective... it's pretty LOL! I especially like how you recycled the blinds. I actually have several blinds in my garage that I was going to throw away last weekend. I didn't because I thought that there just may be a purpose for them. Viola!
Interesting! Also, petroleum jelly comes in useful for so many things...I use it on my pressure canner seal. My father used it long ago to make the tv antenna pole slippery so raccoons wouldn’t climb up the side of the house and get into the attic to lay their young. He laughed to watch them get part way up, only to slide back down again. I can’t get any food from growing outdoors. The possums, raccoons, and squirrels eat everything including some flowers. Even growing things in pots...pots are turned over with ginger gone...from the leaves to the roots. Squirrels here eat the whole fruit...tomatoes, peaches, avocadoes, oranges, mangoes. Not in the country where I could deal with them...suburbia. Even if I could get traps...where can I drop them off? Every wildlife area closed. Thank God for where you are, had planned to sell my home before this lockdown. Guess God wants me here. Am growing indoors under lights. Starting a few things in pots but crazily having to drag them outdoors to water and be in sun all day, then drag them back in the evening. Can’t afford a greenhouse, so will have to just survive.
Hey Wanda and Danny 🤗 WOW that interesting 🤔 to see if it works .. we can’t wait until the next video.. we putting up a small green house.. and we new with green houses ... Take care stay safe .. 🥰 Blessing 👩🌾
Great video guys 👍👏. Another great natural pest control is lady bugs. It would be a great fit for you since you have screens on your greenhouse. Just a thought. Thanks and God bless.
I just saw this video and am having a lot of trouble with the aphids on my broccoli seedlings! I did this and put 1/4 of a plate in each container - works great!! Thank y'all.
Great info. You are my encyclopedia for my little indoor garden. I immediately went to Amazon. Yellow plastic plates and cups, vaseline, and lemon scented dish soap on the way.
That sounds a good idea, I need some thing round my herbs, for some reason i get ton's of white fly on them. Don't get a chance to pick & dry :-( Thank you for sharing. take care
Already high temps in april, you really are deep south. We usually get to 95 for about 3 weeks in August and everyone stays inside to avoid it . We just come out when its -20 to go ice fishin lol. It's so wierd that were in the same country but have such differences I guess the 1500 miles apart makes the difference as we are in the far north. Your green house is looking great! I'm hoping my tomatoes look that good once it's time to plant in june!
What a great idea! Kind of like those hanging yellow fly strips. Crafts in the morning when it's cooler outside, how fun! Hope the plates & blinds work well for you! 102 already -- we're heading toward the 90's here in Phoenix, 100's will be here the end of next month. God bless you both!
Great tips! I'm very interested in seeing how the petroleum jelly works! Walter Reeves has several videos on gardening with the Georgia Public Broadcasting channel, who said use the yellow cups applied with the cheapest oil treatment you can find in the automotive section to attract while flies, mealy bugs and common house flies. I used wood surveyor's stakes to put the cups on and used push pins to hold the cups to the stakes in case of high winds. I'm curious to learn if the jelly works as well as the oil treatment as it would be more cost effective; if it doesn't "run" to the ground in 90+ summer heat. Thanks for sharing!
I will be trying this in a few months, northern MI so can't plant outside for about 4 week's or the 1st of June. Thank's for the info. Look's easy to do. Stay safe and healthy. God bless
Yes! This will solve my greenhouse issues with those little buggers! Funny thing.. I made an Gardening Arts and Crafts video yesterday and used that same yellow paint! 🤣 Great Job Danny and Wanda!
Resourcefulness and using what you have is how people will get through hard times !!! Good for you !! I have done this but I used kayro syrup, I’m not sure where I got that advice from but it worked 🤷♀️ I hope you have an abundant gardening season.....I still have mounds of snow where the plow banked it up 😏
Thank you so much for the video . I am struggling with a white fly infestation. I am for sure going to try your method. I do have yellow paint handy and I do have some old blinds so, I am good to go. I have been trying a dish washing soap spray but with limited success. I have been isolated now for over 6 weeks, live alone and am so thankful I did a bunch of canning last fall. For whatever reason, (and I do believe it was "divine intervention") something told me I had to ramp up my winter storage endeavours. I have always been a bit nervous of pressure canning but after watching you guys and following some of your advice I gave it a go. With my compromised immune system I have been told to stay home and not to go to town even for groceries. A couple of my neighbours have picked up the few perishables I have needed (wanted???) which I could have survived without if necessary . My thanks again to you and Wanda for the encouragement . Take care, stay safe and God Bless you both. Sandie from Ontario Canada.
Now that is American Ingenuity in action. I like it! i usually buy the premade bug strips from the farm store, but they are not cheap. I wonder what scent might improve the attraction factor? Is lemon oil better than say lavender extract? Or do white flies even have scent glands?
Great idea. I had an aphid issue with my greenhouse going into fall and winter. They eventually died out but not quick enough to suit me. Thanks for the jnfo.
I’ve been trying this for a few weeks now. Definitely catching things. The only problem I’m seeing is that when it gets hot the Vaseline seems to melt off the cups.
Hey guys I did not have the paint but guess what I did I'm just five minutes away from Dollar General store and the market they're the only two places I go and they have everything I need whether it's food or whatever but I found the party yellow cups and plates oh boy oh boy and I gather them up so I could take care of the efforts in the white flies with a Vaseline and the dishwasher soap so I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the heads up on those white flies in the Athens oh wow what a day I'm so happy

This is awesome! Hope it works. I did a video last year about aphids in our greenhouse. I wondered how I was getting so many aphids. I was afraid I brought them in with my my soil. Then I found some info in one of my books. Ants bring them in your greenhouse. They carry them from overwintered vegetation to the soil. I had ants in my greenhouse beds then. Yes. I've used this technique alone with adding worm castings around the plants too. White fly and aphids hate the taste of worm castings and they stick to the yellow plate smeared with petroleum jelly.
